Back in Town

Summary:

Yukino meets up with Naoya when he comes back to Tokyo on Christmas Eve.

Work Text:

"It's like snapping a picture of a rare bird, right?" Naoya teased, posing for her on the snow covered park bench. Falling snowflakes caught in his dark hair, twinkling like stars in the dusk's last rays of light. "Nobody knows I'm back in the country yet but you."

Yukino watched him through the lens as she waited for the perfect beams of light from the retreating sun. The snow had already fallen to gather on her own shoulders and the newly teased out strands of her hair. It was cold—but in a way nostalgic. Reminded her of the whole Snow Queen mess they'd survived together, only instead of stress and regret she remembered the way it'd brought them closer.

"I've had better luck with rare birds than with you, Naoya. Mr. 'Occasional postcard from fuck-knows-where." She teased as she lined up the angle.

He laughed softly and it lit up his face. "I'll be happy to tell you all about it now that I'm back. Talking about it while you're there spoils it. But this is a nice time of year to be back in Tokyo."

Christmas eve, and it was actually snowing. Like an American movie.

She almost snapped the shot then and there to capture that smile forever on film. But the lighting wasn't right yet. She glanced up at the snow with a fond smile. "I'd say. Snow on Christmas Eve. It's kinda romantic, ain't it?"

"It is. That's one of the reasons I'm waiting til tomorrow to let everybody else know. I'm sure they all have plans." He chuckled again, brushing a lock of hair out of his face. "I was pretty sure you'd have plans too, but I have to depend on someone, right? Sorry if I inconvenienced you at all."

Yukino flushed, her smile growing wider as she shifted the angle of the shot— just about perfect. Felt nice to have him depend on her like that. Felt nice that she was the person he thought to tell first. "The gals I got plans with aren't the type to go for cliches. 'Sides, Yuka's busy this year. Some job for Nanjo."

"Good for her! You want to go see if we can find a cliche'd piece of cake together?" He batted his eyelashes with a sly smile. "Or do you have another idea?"

She took a deep breath—calmed her breathing to eliminate sway—and snapped a picture of his sly smile framed by the falling snowflakes and the last light of the sun as it framed him in an ethereal glow.

It was better than a photo of a rare bird. It was something much more precious than that. "I'm gonna let you in on a secret—I kinda love that sort of cliche, Nao-nao. That sounds fantastic."

Once he heard the snap, he bounced over to her and slung his arm around her shoulder, careful of her camera. He pressed a kiss to her cold cheek.

"I'll keep your secret. Let's go get that cliche."
