Day 23: Table Decor

Summary:

A shy smile spread across his face and he blushed. “If… if you uh… if you were uh… gonna ask me something…”

Work Text:

The table looked perfect. The food looked perfect. The candles, the dishes, even the napkins were perfect, folded into an intricate shape that Finan could never make himself. Never ever if he tried his whole life could he make something so perfect! And it made him nervous. Because did that mean his boyfriend knew his plan? And if the younger man did know his plan, did that mean he should postpone it? Should he wait? It was meant to be a surprise. He still wanted it to be a surprise.

“Fin? Honey, are you okay?”

Finan flinched, hearing the man’s voice. Sihtric. The love of his life. His other half. His soulmate. His everything. Finan knew the younger man was meant to be his from the first moment they met. Finan loved him from the very beginning. He just knew. It took the younger man a little longer but Finan knew from the start. He was going to marry the man. And now he fucked it all up and Sihtric knew and Finan just didn’t know what to do. He shoved his hand in his pocket and tightened his fingers around the small box he’d been carrying around with him for the last month. He was terrified of Sihtric finding it so he just never put it down. And now he was certain he would never get to open it because he messed it all up and why would the younger man want to marry him anyways?

Sihtric stepped around the table quickly and reached for the older man. He touched Finan’s arm and slid his fingers up slowly, over the man’s shoulder until he touched his neck. “Baby, what’s wrong?”

Finan leaned into the touch for a moment and breathed in the man’s scent. But then he felt the ring box in his fingers and he pulled away. He shook his head and grunted. “M’fine.”

Sihtric frowned as he turned, his gaze following his boyfriend. “No you’re not. Fin… talk to me! Please!”

Finan shook his head as he stepped closer to the table again. “Just eat, okay?” He mumbled and ignored when Sihtric tried to touch him again, reaching for the arm still shoved in his pocket. His eyes widened and he pushed Sihtric off. But then he stumbled back into the table and he failed for a moment. He turned and attempted to catch himself on the table. But he hit one of the candles and knocked it over. He tried to catch it but only managed to knock a second and a third candle over. They hit the tablecloth and the fabric caught fire almost instantly. His eyes widened and he staggered back.

“Fin!” Sihtric grabbed the other man’s arm and yanked him back. He quickly picked up the water pitcher and put out the small fire. He shook his head as he turned and gawked at Finan. “What the fuck, Finan?”

Finan hung his shoulders and stepped back, shaking his head dismissively. “I keep messin’ everythin’ up.” He mumbled as he pulled his hand out of pocket. And then he dropped the box. He glanced down and gasped and stumbled back, attempting to grab it. But instead, he just managed to hit his head against the table and he groaned.

Sihtric raised an eyebrow, watching him. He stepped closer and touched Finan’s forehead. A red mark was already starting to form. “Honey. Just stop moving. I think you need to sit down.” He said, pulling out a chair. He didn’t wait for Finan’s response and instead just pushed the man down. Sihtric knelt down and reached under the table to retrieve the box. He held it in his palm and blinked down at it in mild surprise.

Finan grunted and leaned back as he started rubbing at his forehead. But then he realized Sihtric was kneeling in front of him, holding the box, as his eyes widened. “Dun open that!” He said, swiping the box out of Sihtric’s palm. He leaned back enough to shove the box back into his pocket.

SIhtric blinked and shook himself as he looked up at Finan. A shy smile spread across his face and he blushed. “If… if you uh… if you were uh… gonna ask me something…” He said slowly and licked his lips. “I would say yes.” He said softly.

Finan stopped breathing for a moment. “Yeah?”

Sihtric smiled again and nodded. “Yeah. You… you don’t have to set the kitchen on fire if you want me to marry you.” He said and tilted his head. “In fact, you probably shouldn’t. We kinda need a place to live, honey.”

Finan huffed and crossed his arms, pouting a bit. “Wasn’t tryin’ t’ start a fire.” He mumbled. “Ye jus’ make me nervous.”

Sihtric rolled his eyes as he stood up. He grabbed Finan’s arms and tugged them apart before he pulled the man up to his feet. “Stop pouting. I love you, okay? We can still enjoy dinner.” He said, wrapping his arms around Finan and hugging him tightly. He kissed the side of the man’s neck and smiled against him.

“Wait…” Finan blinked as he detached himself and pushed Sihtric away. “Didja say yes?”

Sihtric giggled and nodded, pulling himself closer again. “I did say yes, sweetheart.” He said and tilted his head. “What about Uhtred?”

Finan blinked and looked at the younger man blankly for a moment. “Uhtred…” He repeated slowly.

Sihtric raised an eyebrow. “Yeah. Our missing boyfriend who’s been away for work for the last week…”

Finan gasped. “Oh…” He said and his eyes widened. “Uhtred! Fuck!” He hissed and shook his head. “Don’t tell Uhtred I fergot ‘bout him!”
