The Miracle of the Blue-Nosed Reindeer

Summary:

Chopper has always been sensitive about his blue nose, but he may find that on one island, his blue nose is something to be celebrated.

Notes:

Disclaimer: One Piece is Oda-sensei’s creation and not mine.

Author’s Note: I’m sure a holiday-themed story featuring Chopper has been done before and done better, but I just couldn’t resist writing something for Chopper’s birthday.

This takes place after Thriller Bark but before Sabaody. There’s not much in the way of spoilers except who is part of the Straw Hat crew.

Chapter Text

“Nami, Nami, Nami! What kind of island are we going to? I wanna know.”

“Calm down, Luffy.” Nami glanced up at the sky, then to the horizon. “I don’t know what kind of island exactly, but based on the weather so far, it’s probably a winter island.” Nami shivered a bit, as if to confirm her guess. “But it’s strange because if I’m reading the log pose correctly, the next island is that way.” Nami pointed to her right. “But the way the weather is stabilizing in that direction,” and Nami pointed a bit to her left, “means an island must be nearby but not quite in line with the log pose.”

“Oh, a mystery island,” Luffy said as if he was imparting some great knowledge. “Let’s go there.”

“We should follow the log pose,” Nami said, although anyone who knew her would know it was a token protest.

“Mystery island,” Luffy replied as he crossed his arms over his chest. “I’m the captain, and I want to go to the mystery island.”

Nami rolled her eyes, but she gave a little smile as she said, “Aye, aye, captain.”

Chopper clapped his hooves together. “I hope it’s springtime. But anything on a winter island would be great.”

Nami bent over to pat Chopper on the back. “Are you a little homesick?”

“No. Sunny is my home, so how could I be homesick?”

“That’s right, little-bro. I bet Sunny’s happy you feel that way.”

“It doesn’t make me happy that Sunny’s happy.” Chopper wiggled happily.

“I could not help but overhear,” Brook said as he walked up to the group on the deck. “But are you from a winter island?”

“I’m from Drum Island. It had snow almost all year long.”

“I never want to go to a place that cold again, but considering we gained the best doctor in the world who helped save my life, I can’t regret it,” Nami said as she patted the top of Chopper’s hat.

Chopper broke out into his wavy dance at the same time Brook said, “Oh my, that sounds like a story I would love to hear.”

“I can regale you with the tale of the dying damsel who was saved by her heroic nakama,” Usopp said, “but I bet you would rather hear how I helped a princess by defeating the secret masterminds behind the plot to take over her desert kingdom. But even that was nothing compared to the time I visited a lava island in summer and had to fight the evil lava monster.”

“A lava island?” Luffy began dancing around Nami. “I wanna go to a lava island.”

“That’s not how it works, Luffy. Right now it looks like we’re heading somewhere cold, probably somewhere with snow if the weather right now is any indication.”

“Snow, snow, snow!!!” Luffy shouted, completely forgetting about a lava island.

“Snow, snow, snow!” Chopper echoed Luffy. “I want snow.”
