Chapter 1: The impossible dream

Chapter Text

Wang Yibo’s POV:

The roar of the crowd was deafening as the lights of the stadium flashed in rhythm to the beat. Yibo stood among the sea of fans, his heart racing in time with the music. His eyes were fixed on the stage, where the figure he had admired for years now stood, bathed in the spotlight. Xiao Zhan, his idol, his inspiration, his every dream personified in one dazzling figure.

This is it. I’m actually here.

For years, Yibo had waited for this moment, the moment when he would finally see Xiao Zhan perform live. From the very beginning of Xiao Zhan’s journey, from the days when he was just another young dreamer trying to make it in the industry, Yibo had been there—watching from afar, supporting quietly, and always, always hoping. But now, standing in this massive crowd, with thousands of other fans cheering in unison, Yibo felt like he was in a dream.

No, not just a dream. This is the reality. This is real.

Xiao Zhan’s voice echoed through the stadium, smooth and powerful, sending a chill down Yibo’s spine. Every note, every word, it was as though Xiao Zhan was singing directly to him. God, how does he do it? Yibo thought, his chest tightening. How can someone have so much talent, so much presence?

He was mesmerized, watching Xiao Zhan move with such effortless grace, his charisma so palpable it seemed to fill the entire arena. The way he held himself, the way his eyes twinkled with joy as he performed—Yibo couldn’t tear his gaze away. It was as if the rest of the world faded into the background, and there was nothing but Xiao Zhan on that stage, commanding the attention of every single person in the crowd.

I’ve seen his performances countless times online, but seeing him like this, in person... it’s a hundred times more intense. He’s more than just an idol. He’s a force of nature.

Yibo swallowed, his hands gripping the edge of the railing in front of him as if the only thing keeping him from floating away was the physical connection to the ground. The crowd’s cheers surrounded him, but they felt distant. It was all so surreal. Xiao Zhan wasn’t just a star to Yibo. He was the very definition of perfection—the kind of person who seemed to effortlessly combine beauty, talent, and charisma into something almost otherworldly.

How does he make it look so easy?

Yibo could feel his pulse thudding in his ears, the air thick with anticipation. His eyes followed every movement of Xiao Zhan’s, unable to look anywhere else. He had seen Xiao Zhan on TV, in interviews, in photos, but nothing had prepared him for the real thing. Nothing had prepared him for the raw energy that emanated from Xiao Zhan as he performed. Every breath, every glance, every smile—Yibo couldn’t get enough of it.

This is a dream. This can’t be real.

And then, as if the universe itself had decided to tease him, something incredible happened.

During the bridge of the song, Xiao Zhan’s eyes swept across the crowd, his gaze landing on Yibo, even though there were hundreds of people between them. For the briefest of moments, their eyes locked. It wasn’t some deep, meaningful gaze. It wasn’t some grand, dramatic recognition. No—Xiao Zhan simply glanced over the crowd, his gaze catching Yibo’s for just a second.

But in that second, Yibo’s world exploded.

Oh my god. He looked at me. He looked directly at me.

Yibo’s heart leapt in his chest, the world around him spinning wildly. Time seemed to stretch as he stood frozen, the connection between him and Xiao Zhan feeling so intense that he could hardly breathe. His heart pounded harder than it had all night, and his thoughts scattered in a chaotic mess.

Did he notice me? Was it just a random glance? It had to be a random glance. Why would he look at me?

But that feeling—the way Xiao Zhan’s gaze lingered just a fraction longer than it should have, the way his eyes seemed to soften ever so slightly—Yibo couldn’t shake it. For just a moment, it felt like the entire world had paused, as if everything had aligned perfectly for them to share that brief instant.

No, it’s crazy. I’m just another fan. He probably doesn’t even remember. But... it felt like... it felt like something.

He could still feel the warmth of Xiao Zhan’s gaze, even as the moment passed and the crowd’s cheers grew louder, filling the air again. Yibo’s breath was shallow, his pulse still racing, but he was too stunned to move. His body felt like it was floating, disconnected from the reality around him.

I need to calm down. It was just a glance. It’s not like he saw me in any special way. He’s too busy, too famous, too... perfect.

But no matter how hard he tried to rationalize it, the sensation of Xiao Zhan’s eyes meeting his was still there, burning in the pit of his stomach. He could feel it in his chest, like a flicker of hope igniting in his heart.

Did he really look at me? Or did I imagine it?

Yibo’s mind spun in circles as he tried to regain his focus. But nothing could distract him from the warmth of that fleeting moment. I never thought... I never thought I’d be this close to him. This... real.

Xiao Zhan finished the song with one final flourish, the audience erupting into wild applause, but Yibo didn’t move. He didn’t care about the cheers or the shouts of the other fans around him. His entire being was consumed by that one moment—by the way their eyes had connected.

Maybe it was nothing. Maybe it was just a coincidence. But Yibo couldn’t stop the smile that tugged at his lips, even as his mind raced with endless possibilities.

Just a glance. A single glance... and my world is spinning. How is that even possible?

The lights slowly faded, signaling the end of the performance, but Yibo stood there, still frozen in the same spot, feeling like he was trapped in a moment he couldn’t escape. Xiao Zhan’s image burned into his mind, every detail of his face, every flicker of emotion, every movement—so vivid, so real.

This is insane. I’m going crazy over a single glance.

But as the lights dimmed completely and the crowd began to disperse, Yibo knew one thing for certain—he would never forget this moment.

Even if it was just a fleeting glance, it was a moment he would carry with him forever
