Outside was cold as the temperature continued to drop while the snow kept falling, but the warm blankets enveloped the couple as they slept peacefully, wrapped up in one another. A slight crackle from the monitor caused one of them to stir. Looking around her eyes landed on the nightstand clock. 5:30am. She sighed. She hated to leave the warmth but with the whine that hit her ears, she knew she needed to get up before the noise woke up her sleeping wife. She slowly unwrapped herself and headed across the hall.
She found her way through the room with the low light of the nursery. She turned down the volume of the monitor before picking the small baby up from her crib.
She cradled and rocked her slowly in her arms, gently shushing her.
The little baby began to quiet down as Beca slowly walked around the room. She ended up by the window, looking out for a few moments taking in the view of the snow that kept falling. She knew she’d have to go shovel the sidewalk before her in laws came over this morning, but for now she shared the moment with her baby girl.
“I thought it would be a few years before you would wake us up so early on Christmas morning,” Beca said quietly to the baby.
“Not likely with a newborn,” Beca heard from behind her. She turned to see her wife Chloe standing in the doorway.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you.”
“You didn’t, I heard the monitor too,” Chloe said as she joined her wife and baby by the window. She wrapped her arms around Beca, her head resting on her shoulder as they both looked down at the little girl as her wide eyes looked around the room.
“I should feed her. She should go back to sleep for awhile,” Chloe said.
“In a minute. I want to remember this moment,” Beca said.
They swayed together as they lay their heads on one another. The baby yawned making her mother’s quietly giggle.
“Merry Christmas my love,” Chloe whispered in her ear.
“Merry Christmas.”
They looked at one another before sharing a slow kiss. With a hectic day ahead, they leaned against one another taking in the early morning together as a family. With a tree full of presents downstairs and more they were sure to receive from their family and friends, they knew the best present of all was the little bundle wrapped in their arms.
