Chapter Text
The chilly breeze rushed by John as he walked down the sidewalk in town with his close friend, Kanaya. Kanaya had bribed him into going with her to see her girlfriend’s band play at a local venue in town known for being reckless.
“Gosh my hands are freezing! Y’know I could’ve stayed home sleeping after taking finals. I wanted to enjoy this winter break” John huffed, watching the steam leave his mouth.
“It’s not that bad!” Kanaya chuckled, “Besides, if I left you back at the dorm I’d probably come back to the gushers raided…” She side-eyed her friend jokingly.
John tried to come up with an argument back but knew too well what she said was true, so he sighed, fixing his posture from trudging to actually up-straight.
“Who’s in your girlfriend’s band? You said her name was Rose right?” John questioned kicking a pebble as he walked.
“Yes her name is Rose,” she smiled, “Rose is the singer, Terezi plays electric guitar, Gamzee’s on bass, and Dave is the drummer.”
He nodded, hearing the loud ruckus of a crowd inline for the bands.
“Here's your ticket,” Kanaya handed him a thin slip of paper, in bright bold colors it said ‘VIP’, “You’ve been to a concert before right?”
He shook his head embarrassed.
“Ah, uh alright..well theres a ticket booth up there, hand in your ticket, there aren’t specific spots or seats so just..make yourself at home. I’ll meet you inside, I need to go through the back door to see Rose. I’ll find you soon.” She spoke soon walking off, disappearing behind the side of the building through an ally where he could only assume was where the backdoor was.
After ten minutes or so of waiting, John had finally found his way escaping from the frigid outside, and into the sweaty inside.
“Eugh, it’s so hot in here and it reeks..” He said to himself, taking a seat at what appeared to be the venue’s bar.
“Alright what’ll it be, a beer? Cocktail? Wine?” the bartender asked John, clearly overworked and underpaid.
“Oh! Uh..I don’t drink..” He stated nervously
“So order something!” The bartender groaned, “You sat here for a reason, no?”
John looked at the small, stained menu which was taped down to the greasy looking bar, “Just a um, shirley temple.”
The bartender stared at John unamused, “One little kids drink coming up..” He said grabbing a glass.
John slumped onto the table trying to remember when Kanaya said the bands would start playing. He was pretty sure there were two openers before Rose’s band would start.
Lost in thought, he didn’t realize that a blonde boy with shades had sat down next to him and was staring.
Receiving his drink, he noticed the bartender wrote on a small label “So blind you can’t see the creep-o next to you?”
John abruptly looked up and to the left to be met with shiny shades reflecting himself right at him.
“Uh- did you need something?” John said awkwardly
“Yeah, are you always this miserable at concerts? Pretty lame to sit around and zone out instead of getting hyped up. Especially drinking THAT.” He stated bluntly, pointing at his shirley temple.
John was taken aback, he had never been so blatantly confronted before, none the less by a stranger, “I- Uh-”
“Jeez stutters. Why did you come here if you didn't come to enjoy?” The stranger continued insulting on him
“Gosh! Do you have no sense of decency in you?” John said exasperated, “I’m here because my friend gave me some VIP ticket because she didn’t want me laying around in our dorm and wanted me to meet her girlfriend who just so happens to be the lead singer for the main band here! Goodness gracious!” He took a deep breath, “and im drinking ‘tHiS’ because I don’t drink alcohol!.” John mocked.
The blonde boy sat there quietly for a few moments before speaking again “Alright well, my apologies. What’s your friend’s girlfriend’s name?” he asked nosily
John hesitated before telling him “Uh, Rose she said, why?”
“Just curious, VIP ticket you said? Well then I’ll see you backstage.” he chuckled
God, of course this guy has to have a VIP ticket too!
John mumbled in acknowledgment to the boy.
“Sooo, what’s your name?” The blonde asked
“John, yours?” he spoke finally opening up a little
“The name is Dave, nice to meet you.” Dave put his hand out to shake
He hesitated slightly before also reaching out to shake Dave’s hand. John really just wanted for Kanaya to hurry back, he was tired of socializing and just wanted to listen to some music at this point.
“Well I need to get backstage, see ya then John.” Dave waved standing up from the bar, taking John’s drink and walking off.
“Backstage…backstage-? HEY WAIT MY DRINK-” John yelled towards Dave, but it was too late, Dave had already disappeared into the crowd making his way wherever he needed to go.
The first band started playing some slow rock music while John sat, waiting for Kanaya to come get him.
Not too much later into the song, Kanaya had found him and brought him to the front of the crowd by pushing and shoving their way through hoards of people swaying and singing.
“Didn’t take too long did I?” Kanaya asked swaying to the beat of the music.
Bright, magenta lights beamed down on them, slightly blinding John “No, not at all,” He said sarcastically, “Some weird guy, god I forget his name, had started insulting and then starting conversation with me. Then he had to go backstage for some reason.”
“I see, uh what was that last part?” Kanaya tried yelling to John over the music, “Nevermind, let’s have fun!” she said looking back up at the band and singing some lyrics.
John had done the same, swaying and enjoying the music. Soon the second band had came on and he picked up a few lyrics and mumbled along, moving his head to the beat of the rock music.
The second band’s name John had noticed was named Astrological Signs, and all of the members wore zodiac signs on their shirts. The lead singer who was up by John had noticeably had the Cancer sign on him, his hair was black and messy and he was gripping the microphone. The other band members wore a Scorpio shirt, she was the electric guitarist, a guy with an electric keyboard wore a gemini shirt, an Aries shirt played bass, and the drummer was a girl with a Pisces shirt.
Once the second band had said their goodbyes and gone offstage, Kanaya’s girlfriend’s band had gone on. The venue went dark for a few, when suddenly a teal light lit up the guitarist, a purple lit the bassist, a red light on the drummer, which John wasn't able to see because the guitarist blocked him, and a lavender lit Rose, the lead singer.
Bopping his head to the beat of the music, John had closed his eyes and mumbled the lyrics he could pick up on. Opening them slightly, he realized he finally had a clear view of the drummer. It was a boy with blonde hair, and shades on his head.
DAVE????
