Work Text:
Seth froze. Lucy had a gun pointed right at her head. She somehow was able to deescalate the situation and got the man to put the gun down. Of course her heart was beating probably over 100 miles per hour, but somehow she was able to still make the arrest. She got him loaded into the shop and finally turned to Seth.
“Let’s go.” Is all she says before getting in the drivers seat.
Once she starts driving, Seth finally says the first words since this whole thing happened.
“Officer Chen—“
“We can talk about this later, okay? I understand you’re a rookie and you’ve never experienced something like this, but this can’t happen Ridley. You can’t let your nerves get the best of you.”
“I’m sorry, Officer Chen.” He says and then goes silent, looking ahead as she drives.
Fortunately for Lucy, that is their last call of the day. After they book him, she tells Seth to have a good night and they’ll start over tomorrow.
As she goes to change out, she begins questioning if she’s even fit to be a training officer. Tim never was in a situation like this because of her, but that’s was due to the training he gave her. Celina has found herself in some sticky situations but Nolan is to blame for that.
Walking out of the building to her car, she hears someone behind her.
“Lucy, wait up.” She turns to see Tim almost sprinting so he can grab the door from her.
“Hey.” She says quietly.
“How’s Ridley doing?”
She knows lying to Tim is pointless, he’s always been able to read her like a book. They had been getting better and he made it known how proud he was of her when Grey informed them both that she would be a temporary training officer until Celina became a P2.
“He’s okay… froze today when our suspect from our domestic call pulled a gun on my head.”
“He… what?” He almost yells, a few other officers leaving turned their heads but kept walking.
“We got on scene, the man came out of his house angry… I tried talking to him but he had a weapon. Ridley was a good ways back and I had to handle the situation myself. Luckily somehow he surrendered and I was able to cuff him.”
“Lucy, are you okay?”
“I’m still shaken up but I’ll be alright.” She starts to walk away but he gently grabs her arm.
“Lucy. What’s really bothering you? I can tell that’s not all.”
“What if I’m not cut out for this? What if he froze because of me? What if I’m not training him good enough? What…”
“Stop. Take a breath.” He grabs her hands as he’s saying that. Even still, his touch is enough to ground her.
“Lucy, I know you’re cut out for this. He didn’t freeze because of anything you did, or didn’t do. He’s always been a little timid and that’s not on you.”
“I’m sure that’s wouldn’t have happened with you.”
“It might not have, but it also could have. Listen, I know you and I know you’re the right person for the job. I know you’re the right person for him, Lucy. I wouldn’t have nearly as much patience or understanding as you have. It’s not always going to be easy… you weren’t always easy…” he jokes hoping to make her laugh, which he did.
“I was too.” She throws back.
“I’ll let you think that. But the point is, Grey gave you this opportunity because he knows you. Because he knows that you’re going to give him all the tools to be the best cop he can be. He has to work through those nerves on his own, and with you helping him, I have no doubt that he will.”
“Thank you. I guess I need to believe in myself and not let myself get in my head as much.”
“You do. But I’ll always be here to remind you how amazing and capable you are. You are in the top five I’ve trained, after all.” He jokes.
“Oh please. I’m number one and you know it.”
“Don’t get cocky now.”
“Not cocky if it’s the truth.”
“Okay, okay… you’re right. But don’t let it get to your head.”
She missed their banter. They weren’t back to where either of them wanted to be, but they were getting there.
“I should get home. I have a bath bomb calling my name.” She goes to turn away. He does the same but decides to turn around and say something more to her.
“Hey Lucy.”
“Yeah?” She stops walking and looks back.
“I’m proud of you, don’t ever forget that. I know I’m still working on things but I’m here for you whenever. Day or night, I’m just a call away.”
She doesn’t say anything, but just gives him a nod and a smile and walks towards her car. He stands there for a few minutes just watching her.
He still can’t believe he walked away from the best thing to ever happen to him, but he was more determined than ever to work hard on himself so he could be the man she deserves.
