You're Sixteen

Summary:

Rin and Shima sneak away from the party to have a moment alone together and so Shima can give his boyfriend a special gift for his birthday.

Notes:

Howdy, all. Hope you all had a wonderful holiday. Came up with this yesterday and wrote it down early this morning so I could have something in time for Rin and Yukio's birthday, focusing on Rin mainly. Can't wait for the Blue Night arc to begin next weekend. Until then, enjoy this. Title and lyrics are from the song "You're Sixteen" written by the Sherman Brothers and famously performed by Ringo Starr.

Work Text:

Rin glanced to his left. It was for the smallest of milliseconds, but it was necessary. Sure, the sounds of the Christmas/birthday party going on inside the dorm’s cafeteria signaled it was still going strong, but with Lightning, Mephisto and Shura to worry about in addition to the other party guests, he wasn’t taking any chances.

Luckily, no one else was in the hallway for now. He smiled happily and set his sights on the pink-haired teenager in front of him. The one that he adored with every single fiber of his being. Shima was still wearing the reindeer headband he brought with him to the party, which honestly made him look cuter.

“What’s up?” he asked. “Why’d you pull me away? Not that I mind or anything. I was dying to get some air anyway.”

Shima chuckled. His arms were behind his back like he was trying to hide something. Rin shuffled his feet anxiously, waiting for his pink-haired boyfriend to say something.

“I wanted us to be alone for a moment,” said Shima. “It was driving me crazy having to keep myself restrained around everyone when I wanted to shower you with love.” He smiled. “I wanted to give you your gift personally and without anyone else knowing since they still don’t know about us yet.”

Rin nodded with five thousand watts of his usual ten thousand watt smile. Shima did have a point. “Aw. You’re sweet. You really didn’t have to do that, you know. I don’t care if anyone else knows about what you got me.”

Shima chuckled. “But I do.”

Whatever his gift was, it would probably be something that would raise questions amongst everyone at the party. He knew Shima all to well to know that would likely be the case. As hard as it was to keep the vow of silence on their relationship, it was necessary at this point.

After the whole episode with the Illuminati and the revelation that his boyfriend was a double agent, he and Shima knew it was better for both of them if they kept their relationship a secret. As nice as it would be to freely show affection for each other around everyone else, it was too risky. Rin knew the Illuminati would use it to manipulate Shima against him and no doubt Mephisto would use it against them for his own sordid schemes as well. It was a Catch-22 situation.

Shima smiled again. “We’ll tell everyone when the time is right,” he said. “Maybe when we’re not in a position where either of us is on a knife edge with the organizations lurking over our shoulders. That way no one questions our loyalties.”

“You know my only loyalty is to you, Rennie.”

“I know. That’s why I can’t let the Illuminati potentially find out that we’re together. They’ll go after you even harder than they did before. Lord Pheles would also no doubt find a way to use it against both of us. You are my greatest joy, Rinny, and I will do anything to protect it.”

Those words made Rin’s heart flutter inside of his chest. An injection of love sickness made its way into the smile on his face. It was the same reaction every time Shima used the little nickname he had for him. He loved it when he called him that.

Before Rin could say anything else, Shima brought his arms from around his back and extended them out to him. A rectangular object was wrapped in simple red and green striped paper.

“Happy Birthday, Rinny. And Merry Christmas.”

Rin’s heart beat faster with excitement. He leaned in and kissed his pink-haired boyfriend on the cheek before accepting the gift. He inspected it closely, curious about what it could be. What was in there? It felt solid – was that glass?

“What is it?” he asked.

Shima chuckled. “Open it and find out.”

“Aw! No fair!”

“I’m a spy, remember? It’s not my nature to give away secrets so easily. Otherwise what kind of a spy would I be? I’ll tell you what kind of spy I’d be – a dead one.”

Rin chuckled before tearing into the wrapping. It took a few short seconds before the paper was completely gone. His heart skipped a beat when he saw what had been inside. It was a framed photograph of him and Shima together on a date they secretly took in Tokyo last month. He smiled at the memory.

The two of them were up at the top of Shibuya Sky with a beautiful sunset just behind them. The lights on the ground beneath them were lit up enough to illuminate the two of them perfectly for the picture. Shima was kissing him on the cheek. Rin could not help but be embarrassed by his expression in the photo. The kiss had taken him by surprise so he reacted like someone had stuck ice down the back of his shirt.

Rin stared at the picture awestruck for what felt like hours before he looked up to meet his boyfriend’s eyes.

“Rennie, it’s awesome. I love it,” he said. “You’re the best.”

Shima chuckled softly, flashing his pearly white teeth in a smile. “Eh, it’s the least I could do for you. You’re special to me, Rinny, and this is my way of showing it. That way if we ever have to be apart for long periods of time, you can look at it and know I’m always thinking about you.”

Rin felt tears well up in his eyes. How could he, the son of Satan, have ended up with such a wonderful guy as his boyfriend? What did he do to deserve to be that lucky? Whatever the case, he threw his arms around Shima and hugged him tightly. He wanted to lose himself in his boyfriend’s smell and just stay there forever.

“You’re the best, Rennie,” he croaked. “I love you.”

“I love you too, Rinny,” Shima replied, returning the hug.

Rin allowed his tail to slip out of the back of his pants and wrap around their waists, securing their bodies against each other. He didn’t care if anyone happened to stumble upon them at that moment. All he wanted for his birthday was to stay like this with the boy he loved with all of his being.

He then heard Shima softly singing in his ear.

You’re sixteen

You’re beautiful, and you’re mine

Rin giggled and kissed him on the cheek. He had, had plenty of birthdays over his sixteen years but this was the best one yet.

Happy birthday, Rinny, indeed.
