Edd looked at the clock. It shined brightly on the dark night which in only 20 minutes will cover with fireworks and instead of a black sky full of light stars, everyone will look at them. They'll stare at it as if nothing else mattered in that moment. Edd felt the same looking at Tord.
There were so many times he wanted to hang out with him and say what's going on. What does he really feels like. But everytime he wanted to spend time with Tord alone, something came up and they had to cancel it. Or there would be someone else who joins them so Edd could't be honest. He couldn't nonchalantly tell Tord how much he like him. He had to wait for a perfect moment. And it turns out that the perfect moment is during new year's eve. He really couldn't beg for anything better. It was actually perfect.
So one week ago, Edd had asked Tord to spend that night with him and to his surprise, he agreed. It was just a normal question. Especially that Tom was supposed to go to some kind of a bar and Matt would either go with Tom or go out somewhere else. And Edd would be here alone. But for some reason it was hard for Edd to ask Tord about it. He was nervous when he saw him just sitting on the couch and not doing anything specifically. He told himself that it's just a normal question. But still, he was making himself even more stressed by every step closer to Tord he took and by every thought that went trough his head. He imagined how stupid he'll feel when it turns out that Tord is actually spending time with somebody else. It made him feel worse and worse till he actually sat on the couch next to Tord and asked if he has any plans for new year's eve.
He couldn't even imagine how happy he was in that moment, when Tord said that he doesn't have any. And how they both smiled when Edd said that he also doesn't do anything and asked Tord if he wants to spend it together.
Edd went to Tord's room and saw Tord laying on his bed. He told him that it's midnight soon. When he didn't respond, Edd came near him and it turned out that Tord was asleep. He couldn't hear Edd talking to him. But did he really of all nights, had to fall asleep on exactly that one night? How ironic.
Edd gently shaked him so he would wake up. Tord mumbled something quietly and slowly got up looking at Edd with tired and questioning face.
– What? – Tord said not really knowing what's going on around him.
– Tord... – he had no idea what to say. He was just disappointed. He even thought that maybe all of those times, when they couldn't hang out because something randomly came up wasn't actually because "something randomly came up". – It's thirty-first of december, you know...
– Yeaahh...? – He didn't say anything for a short while – Oh!
–Yeah!
Tord got up and wore his red shirt to not be in a pyjama. Even though he still looked like he was in one. They both left his room and went to the kitchen. Tord looked through the fridge and grabbed a medium sized bottle of cherry cola and showed it to Edd.
– I bought it yesterday. You always drink the normal one so it'll be something different – said Tord taking out small cups from the cabinets and placing it on the table. – I don't really want to get drunk so I thought that we'll shake it and it'll be just like champagne!
– Yeah...
Edd could't believe that Tord actually did think of him and he really did want to spend this night together. He heard a firework from the outside and looked at the clock.
– Oh shit! There's like seven minutes till midnight – said Edd.
– And I almost overslept it. How embarassing... – said Tord covering his face with his hands.
– We should go outside – Edd said searching for his shoes and his coat. He started dressing up in it as fast as he could.
– But it's cold. – He was following Edd with his sight when he was walking through the house.
– Wear a coat. – He took cups and cola in his hands and looked at Tord. – Come on, I'm waiting.
Tord made an unsatisfied face and got dressed. He took cups from Edd so he wouldn't have to hold everything while Tord would be hiding his hands in pockets.
More and more fireworks could be seen on the sky. They could've both admire the view looking up their heads.
– Wait! I forgot about the clock! – Edd realized and in a hurry he went to the house before Tord could say anything. He fastly took a phone in his hands and came back. – There's three minutes left.
– Yeah, I know. I had a phone in my pocket.
– Really?
Tord took his phone out of the pocket and showed it to his friend. Edd made a shocked face as if he didn't know that it'll be there. They were silent for a moment until Tord first spoke, asking a basic question.
– What are your resolutions?
– Um... I don't know, maybe learning something new... And yours?
– I don't have any either. I was telling myself every year what I want to do when there'll be a new year, but I've never fulfilled it so it doesn't make sense for me to have any resolutions.
– Yeah, I have the same problem.
They were silent again. Even more fireworks could've be seen on the sky above. Edd could feel his hands shaking as soon as he thought about telling Tord about his feelings. But then he imagined everything that might happen if he would tell him. His imagination showed him every scenario. Those good and bad ones. But let's be honest, which one is more likely to happen?
– One minute left – Edd could've barely hear him because of how loud the fireworks were.
– Yeah... You know, I need to tell you something. – His hand were getting wet and he could feel his heart beating.
– Okay... – Tord curiously looked at him and waited for Edd to say what's going on. Meanwhile Edd debated in his mind if he really should say it or just say ,,nevermind". But suddenly, he had the bad scenario in front of his eyes and decision were made. He knew what should he say.
– Nevermind. – He could feel his body relax after he said it.
– No, tell me – He looked at the time – ten seconds left.
His words somehow turned off Edd's mind and without thinking he told him.
– I like you – said Edd not really believing that he actually did.
– Seriously? – Tord was shocked and also couldn't believe that Edd said it. He looked at the time.
– Yeah...
Edd could't even express how he felt in that moment. Sad? Disappointed? Relieved? He was completely confused because Tord didn't say anything. He didn't laugh, he didn't say that he also like him. Nothing. And Edd was nervous again. It'll be weird when they'll be seeing each other in the house. Or weird spending time together if Tord knows about Edd's feelings. But suddenly, all of his doubts were dispelled when he could feel how his hand touches Tord's. They were both holding hands and not because Edd wanted to. Tord took their hands.
– Happy new year – said Tord smiling and he hugged Edd.
– You too – Edd responded.
– I like you too. – Tord hugged him tigter and Edd hearing what Tord just said couldn't imagine himself being happier.
