Work Text:

Xie Lian gently pushed back the overheated body pressing against him, his chest heaving in a chaotic rhythm. Hua Cheng raised his head from where it had been buried in the crook of Xie Lian’s neck, his lone, bloodshot eye simmering with unspoken emotions—guilt, confusion, helplessness.

It was a sight that struck Xie Lian to his very core. The overwhelming need to protect and comfort the precious person before him swelled like a tidal wave, drowning out every other thought. How could he deny Hua Cheng this solace, this release, when his pain was so palpable?

“Forgive me,” Xie Lian whispered, his voice trembling, almost inaudible against the storm of their shared breaths. He leaned forward, his lips brushing Hua Cheng’s, hesitant yet resolute. The moment their mouths met, Hua Cheng released a soft, broken sound, and Xie Lian’s resolve crumbled.

The kiss deepened, and Xie Lian let himself be consumed by the warmth radiating off Hua Cheng in waves, each ripple of spiritual energy both overwhelming and intoxicating. Hua Cheng clung to him as though he were the only anchor in a raging sea, his fingers trailing with a dazed urgency across Xie Lian’s back, over the silk of his robes, and then—hesitant but seeking—beneath them. When his hands met bare skin, Xie Lian shivered violently.

The sensation was electrifying, both exquisite and torturous. Xie Lian had never felt anything like it, the searing contrast of Hua Cheng’s desperation and tenderness. Their tongues met in a languid dance, lighting up every nerve.

Xie Lian clung to Hua Cheng’s shoulders, his grip firm yet trembling. He didn’t trust himself to let go, terrified that if he did, he might lose himself entirely to the overwhelming tide of sensations coursing through him. His thoughts spiraled—uncertainty, shame, and devotion fighting for dominance in his mind—but he shoved them down, scrunching his eyes shut as he pressed their lips together harder, deeper.

Hua Cheng made a startled sound, and then his grip tightened. He shifted their angle, a strong arm slipping around Xie Lian’s lower back, pulling their bodies flush. Xie Lian gasped, the shock of contact sending a deep shiver down his spine. Hua Cheng took full advantage, his tongue delving deeper, his kisses growing more fervent. The guttural groans rumbling in their chests seemed to vibrate through the very air, a symphony of raw, unfiltered need.

The heat between them was almost unbearable. Xie Lian could feel the fiery spiritual energy Hua Cheng was pouring into him, and it burned with such intensity that he half-feared he might combust. The cool, calming air that usually surrounded Hua Cheng had turned into molten lava, igniting something primal and unyielding deep within Xie Lian.

The cacophony of ghostly wails and hellish cries in the streets below faded into white noise, insignificant against the all-encompassing blaze of Hua Cheng’s presence. Xie Lian was drowning, sinking into the overwhelming sensations, and yet, he didn’t want to be saved.

The fever burned through the night, fierce and unrelenting. Xie Lian stayed pressed against Hua Cheng, their limbs tangled in a desperate embrace, as if separation would tear them both apart. Hua Cheng’s trembling subsided only when Xie Lian held him close, their bodies flush, Hua Cheng’s head resting against his chest. The fiery energy radiating from Hua Cheng pulsed rhythmically, syncing with Xie Lian’s heartbeat.

Hua Cheng’s earlier wildness began to soften, his sharp edges dulling under Xie Lian’s steady care. The furrowed lines of pain and tension on his face eased, replaced by something quieter, gentler—impatient lust tempered with reverence. For the first time since their chaotic entanglement began, Hua Cheng looked at peace.

The air was thick, saturated with heat and the faint scent of incense. Xie Lian’s fingers brushed lightly over Hua Cheng’s damp hair, soothing him. The ghost king’s aura, restless at first, gradually steadied under Xie Lian’s calming presence.

Xie Lian’s thoughts swirled in turmoil. Guilt whispered cruelly in his ear—How could I let it come to this? How could I take advantage of his vulnerability?—but beneath the guilt, something else simmered, terrifying in its clarity.

Love.

It struck Xie Lian with the force of a landslide, overwhelming and unrelenting. He loved Hua Cheng.

The depth of it was staggering, an endless abyss of devotion and tenderness. Hua Cheng had been his constant—his unwavering protector, his light in the darkest moments. And now, lying here with Hua Cheng’s feverish body curled against him, Xie Lian felt as though his heart might burst from the enormity of his feelings.

But love brought with it fear: fear of what it would mean if Hua Cheng knew, fear of his reaction. And then there was the guilt. Hua Cheng would surely be mortified once he remembered the events of the night. The thought of that guilt cutting into Hua Cheng like a blade made Xie Lian’s heart ache.

No, Xie Lian decided. Hua Cheng could never know what had happened. He couldn’t let Hua Cheng carry the burden of regret for something neither of them could control.

His fingers moved instinctively, brushing stray strands of damp hair from Hua Cheng’s face. In sleep, Hua Cheng looked so young, so vulnerable, a faint furrow still lingering between his brows. Xie Lian’s heart clenched at the sight, a pang of something both tender and devastating.

“San Lang,” he murmured softly, the name slipping from his lips like a prayer. He didn’t expect a response, but a faint, contented hum rose from Hua Cheng’s throat, his body instinctively leaning closer into Xie Lian’s touch.

Xie Lian's gaze softened, his thumb gently tracing the curve of Hua Cheng's cheek. The ghost king had stood by his side through so much. He had stumbled and fallen countless times, yet Hua Cheng had remained by him—never faltering, never leaving, even when Xie Lian couldn’t yet grasp all the reasons why.

The weight of that unspoken devotion, of everything Hua Cheng had silently given, pressed heavily on Xie Lian’s heart. He had no words for it. The realization—however incomplete—was almost too much to bear.

As the first pale threads of dawn filtered through the temple, Xie Lian pressed a feather-light kiss to Hua Cheng’s forehead, his lips lingering for the briefest of moments. The act was tentative, unspoken, but filled with a promise he didn’t yet have the courage to voice. For now, this would have to be enough.

He closed his eyes and let the fragile stillness of the moment envelop him, Hua Cheng’s unwavering presence anchoring him in the quiet. Morning would bring questions he wasn’t ready to answer, truths he wasn’t ready to face. But for now, he allowed himself the smallest measure of peace—a fragile tether in the midst of a storm.

And in that fleeting stillness, Xie Lian thought: Perhaps, even the most broken of souls can find something worth holding on to.
