Work Text:
“Oh, come on,” Boscha said, slipping out of her grudgby jersey and shoving it into her bag. “You know you love me.”
Amity scoffed.
“I do not. You’re annoying.”
She neatly folded her jersey before placing it in her bag. She looked up as Boscha, who continued to shove and pull more out of her bag.
“Have you ever organized anything in your life?”
Boscha met Amity’s gaze.
“Nope.”
Amity rolled her eyes, but couldn’t help but smile. She walked over to the pinkette and placed ber hand on top of the shirt Boscha was holding.
“Stop. Look,” Amity grabbed the shirt and folded it neatly, sitting it on the bench next to Boscha’s bag.
She reached into the bag and folded a pair of shorts, laying them on the bench too. She looked up at Boscha. The other girl blinked, averting her gaze as her cheeks flushed.
Boscha watched the girl work, and she definitely did not think about her scent getting on the clothes she was just wearing, nor did she think about how Amity was standing in front of her in just her sports bra and shorts, and she absolutely was not imagining Amity reaching out and wrapping her hands around Boscha’s bare waist.
Amity placed Boscha’s clothes back into her bag and handed her the t-shirt and jeans that were in there, assuming those were her after-practice clothes.
“Look how much more you can fit in there now,” Amity said, motioning to the bag.
Boscha followed Amity’s gaze.
“Thanks,” she murmured, fidgeting with the tag on the shirt she was holding.
Amity smiled, returning to her own bag. She slid on a t-shirt and shimmied into a pair of jeans, sitting down to slip on her shoes. Boscha walked around the bench and sat next to her, already fully dressed. She watched Amity tie the laces of her shoes before sitting back up and meeting Boscha’s gaze. Boscha bit the inside of her cheek.
“You okay?” Amity asked.
Boscha smiled, letting out a breath.
“Yeah, yeah. Just sitting.”
Amity raised an eyebrow.
“You do that a lot, you know. Stare at me without saying anything.”
Boscha chuckled softly, looking around the locker room. She clasped her hands together and rested her elbows on her knees, looking back to Amity.
“I can’t help it. It’s not my fault you’re so pretty,” she said, her face reddening slightly as she realized what just left her mouth.
A moment of silence fell over them. It was maybe five seconds, but to Boscha, it felt like five minutes. Five, agonizing minutes where Amity just stared back at Boscha with an unreadable expression on her face.
Amity opened her mouth to say something, but all that came out was a choked breath. She let out a chuckle.
“Shut up,”
Boscha grinned, letting out a breath she didn’t know she’d been holding. She playfully nudged Amity with her shoulder.
“What? It’s just a little compliment,” she hummed.
Amity smiled back.
“I’m just not used to it. Especially when it’s you saying it.”
Boscha smiled and leaned a little closer to Amity.
“Especially when it’s me? What’s so special about me?” Boscha teased.
Amity’s cheeks flushed slightly as she leaned back a bit. She looked off to the side, biting her lip.
“I dunno. You’re just.. Boscha. You know? You’re one of my best friends,” Amity replied, fidgeting with her hands in her lap.
Boscha’s smiled faltered slightly. She leaned back and sat up a bit.
“And I guess you’re really pretty, too.”
Amity met Boscha’s eyes again. She swallowed, her smile returning.
“You guess? Ouch, Amity. I thought I meant more to you than that,” Boscha smirked, placing a hand over her chest in offense.
“Quit. You are. You are pretty.”
Amity smiled, nudging Boscha. Boscha chuckled, moving her hand down.
The two sat in silence for a moment, just looking into each other’s eyes. Boscha’s gaze shifted between Amity’s eyes and her lips. Was today the day? After four years of silently begging Amity to notice her, was today the day she was noticed? Boscha swallowed, sucking in a breath. As she opened her mouth to speak, Amity looked at her watch, checking the time.
“I.. better get home. My mom will be wondering.. and.. you know,” Amity said, standing up.
Boscha’s eyes followed her.
“Oh , yeah, yeah. Me too. I’ll uh, see you tomorrow?”
“Yeah, see you.”
And with that, Amity grabbed her bag and walked out of the locker room.
Boscha sucked in a shaky breath.
She stared at the ground for a moment, replaying the past ten minutes in her head. She picked at her fingers and sighed. She grabbed her bag and stood up, speeding out of the locker room.
She rushed down the hallway to the main entrance. Her bag jingled and her shoes tapped loudly through the quiet hall. She caught sight of Amity’s purple hair just outside the door, and sped to catch up with her.
“Amity, wait-”
As Boscha pushed open the door she saw Amity standing at the bottom of the steps, hand in hand with Luz Noceda. She watched as they giggled, Amity nodding her head profusely. She watched as Luz brought Amity’s hand up to her lips and kissed her knuckles. She watched the two turn and walk off, swinging their intertwined hands between them.
She felt her heart sink to her stomach. She felt her fingertips go numb. Her grip on her duffel bag loosened as her shoulders slumped. She stood at the top of the stairs and watched as her heart melted onto the pavement beneath her. She swallowed hard before slugging down the stairs and heading home herself.
