Work Text:

“Rex, I have a headache.” Fives complained after having had a few too many.

“Fives, you’re a kid, how can you have a headache already?”

Rex usually the one to get the real headaches, already an older cadet with the training regime he was going through adding up to some major migraines for sure.

“What can I tell ya Rexy bro, but my head hurts something awful. Kid or not, I need something for the pain rattling in my head right now.”

Fives having heard a conversation between to older clones after a night out having had a few too many drinks ending up with the day after rattles, using the lingo Fives was now using with Rex.

Echo, having joined the duo snorted loudly at Fives’ choice of words.

“Wot?”

“Well, maybe it’s got something to do with all those cups of caf you drank on a dare.”

“You, drank caf, Fives?” Rex could not believe what he was hearing. “You’re a child Fives, you should have known better to not to drink caf. Like, at all!”

“Yeah, well, it sorta happened. So. Now, I gots a bad headache, okay!” Fives started whining, as he really had a headache.

“How much did you drink?”

“Two, or a few.” Fives was evasive about the amount.

“Seven cups. Big ones too.” Echo tattled on Fives, the twin giving him a menacing glare but Echo wasn’t going to cover Fives for this one.

“Oh, my Force, Fives! That stuff can be lethal for a kid your age!” Rex was immediately more serious and worried realising the slight shaking Fives was already having on his tiny body.

“Well, it’s just caf, nothing like alcohol…” Fives tried.

“Caf, is much worse Fives and its very addictive too!” Rex was checking the kid, trying to figure out what to do with him. Then turning to Echo. “Did you have any?”

Echo stared at him for a moment. Then turning to Fives, the other kid giving him a nod.

“Just the one. But I did not really like it.”

“Headache?”

“None.”

“Okay… good.”

Rex was thinking for a moment before making a decision on what to do.

“Okay, let’s get you some meds, and then, you need to rest. Like sleep this off.”

“Rest? I feel fine, except for the headache that is.”

“No, you don’t understand. It’ll get worse.”

Yeah, all that detox shit can be a real pain for sure.

“Worse?”

“Yup, much worse.” Rex clearly talking out of experience, having made a few mistakes in his own youth, well, when he was slightly younger.

“But Fives gonna be alright, right Rex?” Echo sounded really worried now too, the joke having turned on them for sure.

“Yeah, he will. But not before he gets worse, like I said. He needs to detox.”

Fives looked pale suddenly, the bravado all but gone, the kid certainly panicking.

“Fives, I will be there for you, as will Echo. You will be okay. And I really hope this will be a lesson for ya kid as well.”

Fives gulped audibly, only nodding, letting Rex take the lead on this one. The prank, the dare, having gone too far this time around. Thankfully, Rex was there for him.

After giving the meds to Fives, the kid was tucked into his bed, with Echo and Rex by his side, hanging there tightly.

“Thanks, Rex, for being there for me. You too Echs.”

“Always, Kid.”

Echo was right on the bed beside Fives’. Holding his hand while Rex sat next to the two, the detox never pretty. But these kids were tough and would endure worse too, once out there, in the battle fields. For now, it was only caf addition they needed to deal with.
