something that lasts forever

Summary:

Ahkmenrah shares the superior pastry topping with Larry. It's certainly not cream cheese.

Work Text:

The family movie night is one tradition the Pharaoh thoroughly enjoys. This week’s choice is a screening of a stage performance. While he’d love to see the musical live, he knows why he cannot. Still… it would be nice.

Ahkmenrah rises from his seat and leaves the planetarium, which has been used as the screening room for the past few months. If tonight is to be a movie night, he’ll need a snack.

“Hey,” Larry greets him from the breakroom. “Not enjoying Six?”

“Oh, on the contrary,” Ahkmenrah admits, grabbing a plastic spoon. “It’s splendid. I’m just hungry.”

He reaches into the fridge, and nabs one of the bagels.

“These shall do nicely. Now, for the honey…”

“Ahk, we don’t have any honey here.”

“Nonsense, of course we have honey.”

“No, we don’t. We have cream cheese?”

Ahkmenrah looks at Larry with an expression of disgust.

“What a wretched invention. I know we have some honey, I swear it…”

He snaps his fingers.

“Of course!”

Rummaging through his own tomb, he finally finds it. A jar sealed for over four thousand years.

“Ahk, please tell me that isn’t blended crocodile brains or something.”

“Guardian of Brooklyn, prepare to be proven wrong.”

He pops the lid, revealing a crystallized, golden substance. Its aroma is sickly sweet.

“…is that honey?!”

“Straight from the royal apiary!”

The bagels burn his hands for a moment as he lifts them from the toaster.

He jams the plastic spoon into the honey, before spreading it on the bagel. With a crunch, he takes a bite, and a happy smile spreads across his face.

“Ahh, nothing better… here, have a bite,” he offers.

“Uhh… are you sure that’s safe?”

“Perfectly!”

“Hey, Dad,” Nicky says from his seat in the back of the car, untying his ice skates. “Did you know honey is good for thousands of years after it’s made? It’ll last forever.”

“Y’know,” Larry still tastes a bit of the sugar on his lips. “I did know that, actually.”
