The snow is coming down thick and it makes the ground below him far more slippery than Dick is used to. He runs as fast as he can, trying not to blow the lead he’s made for himself. Slade will notice he’s gone soon. He’ll think of strategy soon, because he will need a strategy. He’s in a different country with no contacts and no safe place in mind. But he won’t even get the opportunity to search for one if he lets Slade catch up with him right now.
Unfortunately, that’s when his foot chooses to slip on a patch of ice and he falls off the road and into the woods. He tries catching himself, but between the snow and the ice, he just rolls down and down and down. He hits a few tree trunks on the way down and he definitely feels something crack. He just does his best to cover his head and lets the momentum carry him.
Between one second and the next he’s dropping into rushing water. The chill shocks right through him and it’s all he can do to reach out and try to grab one of the rocks going past. He manages to get one, but his hand slips on it and slices open on the jagged edge. He keeps his hand to his chest after that and just lets the water sweep him. He fights to keep his head above the water, but he does go under a few times, swallowing water each time.
Finally, the rapids spit him into a calmer stream and he sloshes his way out of the water. He bites the inside of his cheek to keep his teeth from chattering too bad. He wraps his arms around himself and chatters. He spots lights in the distance and heads toward them, determined to get somewhere he can be safe.
