The rabbit struggles in the trap, frantic wiggling to try and get out of it. It's small, there probably won't be a lot of meat on it, but this trip is for Dick to learn how to trap and snare effectively. How much food the game gives is secondary. As long as it gives something, then it's considered a success.
Slade had set this particular trap. He's set all of them really. It's their first day out, which means Dick is on observation duty. He's not to touch anything until tomorrow when the hands on learning starts. He doesn't mind that. He's not graduated to killing anything yet. And even if it is just a rabbit so they can eat, it still twists something up inside him.
Slade takes the rabbit out of the trap. It fights him, scrabbling for a way to get out, but Slade snaps its neck dispassionately. It goes limp in his hands and Dick flinches despite himself. Some days, all days, he feels like that rabbit. Struggling to get out, only to be broken down until he’s limp and lifeless. He swallows down the lump in his throat and gathers his hunting gear.
Time to check the next trap.
