I'll make it up to you somehow

Summary:

Ruka ends up being unable to spend her first New Year's Eve with Yuki after having become a couple.

Notes:

Something short to kick off the new year.
Same AU where they're adults living together and there's no Cancer.

Work Text:

Opening the door slowly so as to not make a sound, Ruka took a look inside. Once her eyes had adjusted to the darkness, she confirmed that the bed was occupied.

She slipped into the room as quietly as she could. Turning on the light, she examined the figure closely. Despite being dressed in pajamas, a tablet computer lay beside her on the bed, leading Ruka to guess that she had fallen asleep while working.

She had probably tried to stay awake until midnight.

A pang of guilt and a warm sensation ran through Ruka's chest at the same time, and she reflexively pulled back the covers with the intention of slipping in next to her. But the figure turned in her sleep and slowly opened her eyes.

“Mhm… Ruka…?”

Ruka soon realized her mistake, but it was already too late.

“I’m sorry. Did I wake you up? Work took longer than I expected.”

Yuki blinked a few times as if to adjust her vision.

“What's the time?” She said at last.

“...It's way past midnight,” Ruka's reply gave away how regretful she felt. But all she could do was nervously await a response.

After a few minutes of silence, Yuki finally opened her mouth.

“It couldn't have been helped. I fell asleep anyway.”

Ruka wanted to apologize again, but she held back and decided to just crawl into bed instead.

“You're in your pajamas? Did you eat already?”

“I did, but…” Ruka paused, choosing her next words carefully. “I'm still very hungry.”

“Then I'll heat something up for you.”

But Ruka just shook her head and wrapped her arms around Yuki so that she wouldn't leave. Then she moved closer and rested her chin on her shoulder, nuzzling her face against her neck.

“You smell really nice, Yukki.”

Ruka could feel the skin pressed against her face heating up and even in the darkness, she could imagine the blush creeping up Yuki's face.

“The year just started, y’know. Aren't you tired from work?” Yuki turned her head to look at Ruka and then ruffled her hair roughly as if to hide her embarrassment.

“Yeah, I'm tired,” Ruka confessed after Yuki let go. She pulled her lover closer, taking advantage of the position to get a quick taste of her lips. “But this is the best way to relax.”

“So spoiled…”

“Don’t I deserve a treat for having worked so hard every day of the year?” Ruka widened her eyes, raised her eyebrows and turned her lips downward. She knew that Yuki couldn't refuse that look.

“...Fine, I get it. But don't go overboard, okay?”

“Okaaay!" Ruka replied cheerfully and released the hug to pull at the hem of Yuki's hoodie. She might have been late but maybe she still had a chance to make up for it. Or maybe that was her intention all along. Staring at Yuki's pink cheeks and moist eyes, she could only hope that what she was about to do would free her from the guilt of leaving her alone.
