Work Text:

Taehyung has never minded public transport, especially in the early mornings or late at night. There’s something so special about riding a train in a quiet but full car, the sun hidden just enough to cast the world in a dusty blue film. It’s like living in a contemporary impressionist painting.

Taehyung loves to people-watch on the train, when he’s commuting to or from work. He likes to guess where people are going, and where they’re coming from. He makes up mini backstories for all the strangers he may never see again. He’s pretty sure he has seen repeat faces, but with so many faces around he never remembers anyone clearly.

He’s pretty sure he’ll remember this stranger though. This beautiful stranger.

The man looks like a painting all on his own. The centerpiece of the train. If they were in a painting, this man would contrast the hazy blue with a gentle glow surrounding him like an aura.

Taehyung knows he’s staring, but if he’s going to see this stranger only once then he’s going to commit him to memory.

His fingernails have orange residue beneath them, the telltale sign of an orange peel. His fingertips are calloused, but his palms look soft. A musician, most likely. He’s wearing a mask over his chin and it’s causing his cheeks to squish just a little. He looks soft.

If Taehyung was braver, he’d say hello.

-

Yoongi hates taking public transport. It’s crowded and dirty, and it’s always far too early or late to deal with the smell of dozens of strangers. Yoongi usually spends the whole time on his phone or listening to music and staring out the window, but today his phone is dead.

There’s someone staring at him. He feels it before he sees it. When he glances over, there’s a man with soft looking hair staring at him not-so-subtly.

Yoongi tries his best not to fluster under the gaze of this frankly beautiful stranger. He’s able to at least keep his glances more subtle than the strangers.

The man looks like he walked out of a novel written in the late 1800s, with a soft academic look and eyes that look like he’s seeing the modern world for the first time.

Yoongi doesn’t usually get these ‘commute crushes’, he’s not one who falls for initial attraction often, but there’s something about this stranger he feels drawn to. Not the sort of attraction to cause a craving for a one night stand, but rather the sort of attraction to warrant poetry and music. The type of attraction to cause a craving for a campfire under the stars. The type of attraction Yoongi can’t remember feeling before now.

If Yoongi was braver, he’d say hello.

Taehyung gets off the train one stop before Yoongi.
