Work Text:

Ymir and Historia's wedding day had been one filled with many emotions, and many bright memories that would last for years to come.

As the morning had come, Historia's nerves were out of this world. It didn't help that she wasn't supposed to see Ymir that day, bad luck and all that, and so she was left to have her own private freak-out in her hotel room. When she'd gathered herself enough to go meet her bridesmaids and maid of honor, she was given nothing but well-wishes and reassurances. She'd cried again, embarrassingly, but she was so happy. This was going to be the best day of her life, married to the woman she loved more than anything .

Surprisingly, Ymir was also starting to feel the nerves. She hadn't expected that. Every day leading up to the ceremony had been fine, every hangout a fun time for her and her fiance, Historia. Yet as the sun woke her up on the dawn of her wedding day, Ymir felt like there were a million bricks sitting on her chest. This is it. It's really happening. You're going to marry Historia. It's everything you've ever wanted. Despite her own reassurances, she was worried that it would somehow get ruined. What if she messed up her vows? Tripped on the carpet while walking the aisle? She'd never forgive herself if she ruined Historia's dream wedding, one they'd saved up to have for years. It wasn't an expensive wedding, but it was perfect. Ymir only wanted the best for Historia.

She’d laid there in bed for an embarrassing amount of time, unsure of what she should do about it. Eventually, someone knocked- Reiner. Telling her to get her ass up and get ready, for God's sake. She'd reluctantly dragged herself out of bed, and when she'd opened the door to greet Reiner, he'd winced. “That bad, huh?”

“Yeah, you look like shit. What the hell's wrong?” Reiner had laughed at her, looking her up and down. “Today's your wedding day. I thought you'd be excited.”

“I am. I'm incredibly excited. But I also don't want to fuck this up.” Ymir's words are still crass despite the bundle of nerves that seemed embedded in her chest. Reiner didn't seem surprised. “I want everything to go perfect for Historia. We’ve wanted this for so long, and… Well, I love her. I want it all to work out.”

“You're overthinking this.” Ymir could recall how Reiner had placed his arm on her shoulder with all the gusto of a concerned older brother figure, giving her a reassuring smile. “Honestly, Ymir… It's weird seeing you so worried about everything. Just go with the flow, like you usually do. It's going to go okay. Leave the hard planning stuff to us, your friends, and focus on you and Historia. Even if things aren't perfect to your plan, they'll be perfect for the day. You've got nothing to be scared about.”

For some reason, the words had soothed Ymir's nerves enough that she no longer felt like she was going to die, even if they were coming from Reiner. “... Thanks, man. I appreciate that. Just don't let numbskull number one and numbskull number two mess anything up.”

“You mean Connie and Sasha?” He'd laughed heartily at that. “Oh, don't worry about them. We've got it handled. I swear.”

The morning came and passed, and soon the wedding had started in earnest. They didn't have many guests, but their closest friends and family had all gathered and gotten seated. Chatter died down as the music began, signalling the start of the wedding.

The venue was beautiful. It was outside of a picturesque church, which had been sparsely decorated with beautiful white flowers. The weather couldn't have been better, with the sun shining, the wind gently blowing, and the sky filled with fluffy clouds. The officiant walked down the red carpet between the sets of white chairs leading up to the altar, which sat underneath a beautiful arch of multitudes of flowers and ribbon bows.

After the officiant came Ymir, looking much less nervous than she had before. Her shoulders were set back and she held a confident smile, ready. She'd chosen a white suit for the day, paired with a baby blue cloth in the jacket’s breast pocket. She took her place beside the altar and waited patiently, just so ready to see her to-be wife.

Next was the best man, Reiner, and then the groomsmen, all dressed in black suits with blue ties. Following were Historia's bridesmaids, in matching blue dresses. Of course, after that followed the maid of honor- Mikasa- and the flower girl, tossing blue petals, and the ring bearer, offering the rings.

Finally, it was time for Historia. Instead of her father walking her down the aisle, Levi was the one walking her down the aisle, looking like he might actually cry if he thought about what he was doing for too long. He held a smile as he led her slowly down the aisle, more than honored to have been chosen for the role.

Historia couldn't take her eyes off of Ymir the entire time she was walked down the aisle. She'd told her even before they'd gotten engaged that there was no way she was wearing a dress, and Ymir had laughed and promised that she'd never make Historia wear a dress if she didn't want to. So, she hadn't. She'd chosen to wear a black suit, with a blue tie matching the blue of everyone else's. It was intricately woven with stitching, just like Ymir's, making it stand out against everyone else's.

Levi led her to the end of the aisle, where they paused for a moment. He gave her a reassuring smile and a kiss to her hand before letting her walk the last few steps to the altar while he took his place next to Erwin, wiping his tears.

Historia could hardly hold back her smile now that she was face to face with Ymir, and both of them were holding back their tears. She had taken Ymir's hands in hers, gentle, giving them a little squeeze. It's really happening. She could recall every detail, especially as the moment of them being married dawned.

“We welcome you here today for the joining of Ymir and Historia in marriage.” The officiant had started, welcoming the guests in, and going through the motions of explaining the wedding. It was all important, sweet stuff- but the words didn't really hold any weight to either of the two getting married. They were focused on each other . “I, and all of you, are to bear witness.”

Ymir stood up straighter. Historia took a deep breath, quelling nerves. It was about to happen.

“Do you, Historia Reiss, take Ymir to be your lawfully wedded wife, through sickness and in health?”

Historia had looked at Ymir then, with all the adoration and love in the world. Her blue eyes reflected Ymir and the sunny sky in them, glassy with unshed tears. “I do.”

“And do you, Ymir, take Historia Reiss as your lawfully wedded wife, through sickness and in health?”

“I do.” Ymir had said it with full confidence and no hesitation, squeezing Historia's hands tighter. Her own expression held nothing but love for Historia.

“At this time, Ymir and Historia will now exchange rings and vows.”

Historia had decided to go first. She cleared her throat and carefully got her vows out, which was on a messily folded piece of paper. Her hands shook as she held it up. “Ymir… You taught me to be myself, completely and authentically, no matter what anyone else thought of me, or believed I should be. I've taken that lesson with me for my entire life, thanks to you. I'm grateful for each day we've ever gotten to spend together, as it's been a day where we've discovered how unending our love for each other is. I'm so happy to have met you, and to have been changed by you. I wouldn't be the woman that I am today, and I would love nothing more than to be your wife. I love you.”

Ymir had nearly cried. Nearly. Still, she held it together. She didn't bring out any papers, instead reciting from heart. “Historia. Just as I've changed you, you've changed me- and for the better. If you ask any of our friends, they'd tell you that you've softened me from a hardened warrior to that of a potato.” The crowd had chuckled. “But I don't mind. To be loved is to be changed, right? You've shown me what kindness is, and how to believe in myself and others. You’ve made my life worth living, Historia, and I can't wait to spend the rest of my days as your wife, and you as mine. I love you.”

They'd exchanged their rings and deep breaths, the nerves starting for both of them. So close.

“With the power vested in me, I now proclaim you, Ymir, and you, Historia Reiss, wife and wife. You may now kiss the bride.”

The crowd erupted in cheers and applause Ymir leaned down and captured Historia's lips in a sweet kiss, dipping her. They’d fallen into their own laughter as they broke apart, the tears finally falling- but only in complete bliss. They'd practically sprinted down the aisle together, followed closely by the wedding party- overjoyed to finally be one.

“... and that's the story of how we got married.”

Their daughter stared up at them with wide, wondrous eyes- absolutely captivated by the story being told. She'd gotten old enough to be curious about such things, and the story had completely fascinated her.

“Your wedding sounded amazing. ” She grinned ear to ear as she settled back into her bed. Historia sat on one side, Ymir on the other, but their hands were held over the lap of their daughter. Their rings were still proudly adorning their fingers, a lasting showcase of their commitment to each other. “I can't wait to have a wedding of my own!”

“Oh, I'm sure you will. But it better not be to any stinky boys. ” Ymir wrinkles her nose with a laugh, standing up- but not before pressing a kiss to her daughter's forehead. “You don't wanna marry a boy, do you?”

“No!” She laughed, shaking her head. “They do stink. And all the boys in my class are mean. I wanna marry a girl! They're all so pretty!”

“Well, if that's what you want, darling, we'll support you all the way. But if you end up liking a boy, that's okay, too. Don't write them off because they're stinky. ” Historia gave her head a ruffle. “You'll have an amazing wedding one day too. I promise.”

“Hehe… Okay, mama. I can't wait!” She pulled her covers up to her chin as Ymir and Historia went to the door, quietly leaving. “Goodnight, mama. I love you!”

“We love you too, darling. More than anything.”
