Work Text:
Blade was, as usual, asleep.
He spent most of his undeath either unconscious or in a mara-fueled frenzy, his lucid hours infrequent by choice. He had no ambition or desire, no reason to suffer through the agony of being aware. Sleep was the closest he could get to death and he indulged it often.
“Wake up, grumpass.”
Blade grunted. He slept upright more often than not, simply drifting off wherever he stumbled to rest with his arms crossed and his cheek tucked against his shoulder. The resulting ache in his neck was nothing compared to his thousand other pains, so he never bothered to get more comfortable. His nose twitched as he shifted on the couch.
He blearily cracked an eye when he felt his sword tugged out of the crook of his elbow, then left to thump onto the cushions beside him. Silver Wolf was careful not to cut him with the edge of it, but she needn’t bother. It was in desperate need of sharpening.
Blade couldn’t muster the energy to care. The person that took religious care of his tools was long dead. Blade shut his eyes again and didn’t resist the small hands that wrapped around his right wrist, pulling his arm out of its protective pose.
“Move.”
Blade did as instructed and let his left arm fall limp at his side. A warm weight plopped into his lap, driving the air out of his lungs with a pained “Hmph.”
“Sorry,” Silver Wolf said. He felt her fidget in his lap, scooting until her back was flush with his chest. He scrunched up his nose and tilted his head away as her ponytail tickled his face. He heard the TV remote click.
“Ew, Firefly made you watch one of those lame romances with her again?”
So that’s how he got on the couch. Blade rarely remembered how he ended up in places, nor did he care, but sometimes it was nice to be reminded. He probably made it about ten minutes into the movie before drifting off. At least Firefly never took it personally.
Blade felt his arms being manipulated again. Silver Wolf picked them both up and wrapped them around her waist, then wiggled back until she was comfortable. He felt her head tilt upwards under his chin. “Can you see okay?”
“Hm?” Blade blinked into half awareness, glancing down at Silver Wolf in his lap. She had one ankle propped on the opposite knee, using her legs as a support for her tablet. Nauseatingly bright colors and shapes flickered across the screen while an upbeat, electronic tune played.
“Mmhm,” he hummed.
“Sweet.”
The warmth was nice. Blade shifted to rest his chin on her head, mostly to get her hair out of his face, and settled in to watch her play her game. He had no idea what was happening. Numbers popped up and exploded into confetti faster than he could read them. Her fingers danced across the screen like a master weaver making lace. It almost made him wish his hands still worked.
Blade sighed deeply, breathing in long and slow and letting Silver Wolf lean farther back into him on the exhale. She was, unfortunately, rather boney and her hip dug uncomfortably into his stomach, but the outside warmth and weight did wonders for the myriad pains that came with being an abomination of abundance. In a rare moment of self interest, Blade adjusted his own hips to take some pressure off of his back. Silver Wolf easily followed the motion, not even breaking her combo… streak, whatever it was, as he moved under her.
“Comfy?” she asked once he stopped moving.
“Mm.”
“Good.”
Soon Blade’s eyes drifted shut again, his head tipping forward until he rested his full weight on her. He felt more than heard her chuckle to herself, reaching down to pat his thigh twice just as his consciousness slipped away to a more peaceful sleep.
“G’night, you crusty old bastard.”
Blade smiled into her hair, and then he was gone.
