“How long have we been friends?” Lily asked, gently smoothing sun cream over her shoulders.
Her movements were elegant even now. The way her fingers curled around the soft curve of her shoulder and danced across her collarbones made Pandora want to trace that freckled skin with her tongue. Why did she have to wear the halter top suit?
Pandora tore her gaze away, forcefully refocusing her attention on her surroundings. The private beach. The ocean. Their friends swimming. Lily asked her a question. What was it? Something about being friends?
“How long?” she echoed.
Lily nodded, then lifted her arms over her head to smooth the white cream on her neck and upper back. “A few years now, yeah?”
Their annual girls’ only holidays started three summers ago, about six months after Dorcas and Marlene’s wedding. The wedding she and Lily were bridesmaids in, and where she met this stunning woman for the first time at their hen party the night before. Has it really been that long?
“Mm-hmm, almost four years now,” Pandora said. She flipped through the book that she’d been pretending to read for the last half-hour or so while she stared at Lily from behind her sunglasses. Like a creep. “Hard to believe it’s been that long already.”
Lily hummed in agreement as she unfolded from her beach chair and lifted to her feet. Without another word, she shooed Pandora’s legs off of her chair and sat on the foot rest. Handing the bottle of sun cream to her, Lily dropped her chin to her chest and waited. As if it were completely normal for Pandora to touch her.
“Oh, right,” Pandora said, squirting cream into her palm. “Just your shoulders or…”
“No, all of it. I burn so easily, it has to go everywhere.” Lily swept her long, plaited hair in front of her shoulder.
Pandora tentatively pressed her fingers to Lily’s warm, impossibly soft skin. As she spread the cream around her bare back, she made sure to apply it liberally everywhere the suit didn’t cover. When her fingers drifted down to the base of Lily’s spine, Pandora shifted backwards to squeeze her thighs together. Do not make this weird!
“Anyway, I was wondering if you’ve ever thought about us.”
Her hands paused amid the delicate swirls she was creating, but Pandora managed to swallow past the lump in her throat. “Us? What do you mean?”
Lily shrugged lightly, then glanced back at her with a small smile. “I’ve thought about it, haven’t you?”
“You’ve thought about us? As in…” Pandora prompted, searching the depths of her bold green eyes. “What about us?”
“You know, us. Us us.”
Thank you. Now it’s as clear as mud, Lily.
“Us us.” Pandora frowned as she returned her attention to Lily’s back. “What does that mean?”
Lily’s sigh was well beyond exasperated. She lifted up and slid back, wedging her body between Pandora’s legs. Startled, Pandora held her hands out to the sides like a sun cream soaked scarecrow.
“Like this. Do you ever think about us like this?” Lily asked, trailing her fingers over Pandora’s knees. She glanced over her shoulder coyly. “Would you want to?”
Pandora choked on her own spit. “W-What? With you?”
“If you want to, we could.” Lily hesitated, then clasped her hands in her lap. “Or not, if you don’t.”
She started to move away before Pandora’s brain clicked back on again. Mindlessly, she reached for Lily and hauled her fully into her lap by the hips. Lily snorted a laugh as she turned to face her, but Pandora had already launched forward to kiss her cheek, meeting her grinning mouth instead.
The kiss was truly terrible, what with Lily giggling at Pandora’s overeager response and their mismatched heights. Lily was several inches taller and straddling her lap, so she towered over Pandora. Worse still, her wandering hands created a disaster all on their own. It wasn’t until she pulled back to try again that Pandora realised she’d smeared sun cream all over the wrap tied at Lily’s waist.
“Oh! I have too much…” she trailed off, frantically spreading the cream on Lily’s arms. Rather quickly, she realised there was more on her hands than any one person could possibly need. Her cheeks heated as she rubbed it in on herself too. “May have overdone it a bit.”
Lily’s grin turned wicked as she hitched up one bare leg. “Plenty of skin left. Go on.”
A pitiful whine escaped before she could stop it. She’d dreamed of this so many times, even created elaborate scenarios that led to her hands exploring every inch of this gorgeous woman’s body. Pandora cursed under her breath as she stroked her hands over the thick thighs she’d admired all afternoon. Every nerve in her body was a live wire, bursting into sparks wherever their bodies met.
“When?” Pandora asked breathlessly when the sun cream was finally gone. Her hands gripped Lily’s thighs, desperately trying to contain their wandering. “We can go back to the beach house now if–”
“Relax, Pandora,” Lily whispered against her lips. “We have all weekend.”
This time, the kiss was perfect. The slide of Lily’s strawberry lip gloss against her own lips sent a delighted shiver down her spine. Pandora melted into Lily’s arms as their tongues danced together for the first time. Yes! This. More of this.
“About time,” Marlene snarked, flopping in Lily’s chair. She leaned over and flicked water at them. “Oi, let the girl breathe, Lils. She’s going to pass out.”
Lily nipped at Pandora’s bottom lip as she pulled away. Then, she smoothed over the spot with her thumb and grinned. “Alright?”
Pandora stared up at her, mind hazy and eyes unfocused. “Brilliant. You’re just…brilliant.”
