Work Text:
in the silence of wayne manor in the early hours of the morning, damian wayne lay awake, his mind a whirlwind of thoughts. the dim light filtering through his curtains cast eerie shadows across his room, adding to the solemn atmosphere. the darkness enveloped him like a heavy cloak, amplifying the weight of his worries. it wasn't unusual for damian to find himself unable to sleep; his mind was always active, constantly analyzing and strategizing.
tonight, however, his thoughts were consumed by one person in particular: jonathan kent. damian couldn't help but marvel at the ease with which jon navigated life, seemingly untouched by the chaos that surrounded them. how could someone be so carefree, so effortlessly charming?
but beneath damian's frustration lurked a deeper longing, a yearning for something he couldn't quite define. he admired jon's unwavering optimism, his ability to see the good in everyone, even in the darkest of times. and yet, a part of damian couldn't help but resent him for it, resent him for being everything he wasn't.
lost in his thoughts, damian was momentarily startled by a gentle tapping on his window. blinking in alertness, he turned towards the source, his heart skipping a beat as he saw jon standing outside, illuminated by the soft glow of the moon.
"damian?" jon's voice floated through the glass, warm and concerned. "are you okay?"
damian hesitated, his defenses instinctively rising. a but as he met jon's gaze, filled with genuine concern, something inside him softened.
"i heard your heartbeat," he explained softly, his expression earnest. "i just wanted to make sure you were okay."
damian's throat felt tight with emotion as he struggled to find the words to respond. here was jon, standing before him in the dead of night, offering nothing but genuine concern and care. and yet, damian couldn't shake the nagging feeling of unworthiness that gnawed at him.
"i'm fine," damian, his tone defensive.
but jon wasn't convinced, reaching out to gently touch damian's hand through the glass. "you don't have to pretend with me, dami. i know what it's like to lie awake at night, lost in your own thoughts."
for a moment, damian was silent, his gaze fixed on the boy's earnest expression. here was someone who understood him, who saw through the facade he wore for the world. and in that moment, damian felt a flicker of something unfamiliar stirring within him: hope.
with a shaky breath, damian reached out, unlocking the window and allowing jon to climb inside. as jon stepped into the room, damian couldn't help but notice the way the moonlight danced across his features, casting him in an ethereal glow.
"thank you," damian whispered, his voice barely audible in the quiet of the night.
jon smiled softly, his eyes shining with warmth as he wrapped damian in a gentle embrace. "dami, i'll always be here for you."
and as they stood there, bathed in the moonlight, damian realized that maybe, just maybe, he didn't have to face the darkness alone anymore. with jon by his side, anything felt possible, even finding peace in the midst of chaos.
