The Byler Files, appendix B: Mike's Song Lyrics

Summary:

💙💛💚

In one of Mike's letters to Will, he writes:

"Um, I have a little secret to confess… I write songs. Yup. Cringey, huh? I've been writing them for years now, since the first day of Kindergarten, actually – the day we met. Most of them suck, but I think a few might be pretty good. Eddie thinks so too. And here's another confession… they’re basically all about you. I know it sounds stupid and corny, and kind of makes me want to bury my head between the couch cushions a little, but… you inspire me, Will. You really do. You're just so sweet and beautiful and talented and amazing, and I think there should be songs about you, so I wrote some... I've been writing a lot of them since you left, because honestly, you're all I can think about. In case that wasn't obvious already."

Chapter Text

"Sketchbook"

The way you're staring into space,
That dreamy look upon your face,
Makes me wonder what goes on in your mind.
You hold a pencil in your hand,
And though I'm trying to understand,
I get the feeling that you've left me behind.
You're so quiet, you're so shy,
But I can glimpse behind your eyes
Entire galaxies that only you've seen.
Pastel, crayon, pen and ink
Become a bridge to what you think,
Wish I could find a way to fit in between.

I want to be your… sketchbook,
Lay your hands all over me.
Let me be the pages
where you draw your hopes and dreams.
Your… sketchbook,
Run your fingers down my spine
And whisper, "You will always be mine."

Please let me be your… sketchbook,
Take me everywhere you go.
And tell me all the secrets
only you and I would know.
Your… sketchbook.
Your eyes would always be on me,
And then I'd know the world that you see.

All those drawings that you've made,
Someday the lines will start to fade.
I'll lose that part of you I'm able to hold.
I need to reach you where you are,
Color a pathway through your scars
To a connection that will never grow old.
I want to know you inside out,
Learn what your heart is all about,
The truth you bury that you're scared to reveal.
If I could study from all sides
What your imagination hides,
I'd get to finally meet the you that is real.

I want to be your… sketchbook,
Lay your hands all over me.
Oh, let me be the pages
where you draw your hopes and dreams.
Your… sketchbook,
Run your fingers down my spine
And whisper, "You will always be mine."

Please let me be your… sketchbook,
Take me everywhere you go.
And tell me all the secrets
only you and I would – you and I would know.
Your sketchbook.
Your eyes would always be on me,
And then I'd know the world that you see.

We're perfect on paper
Like charcoal and chalk.
Your sketches hold treasures
I'd love to unlock.
You smooth out my wrinkles,
I soak up your tears,
Together through all of these years.

If I could persuade you
to open your heart,
I'd love you so gently,
I'd treat you like art.
You'd fill up my pages,
I'd swallow your fears,
Hold on ‘til the pain disappears.

I want to be your… sketchbook,
Lay your hands all over me.
Oh, let me be the pages
where you draw your hopes and dreams.
Your… sketchbook,
Run your fingers down my spine
And whisper, "You will always be mine."

Please let me be your… sketchbook,
Take me everywhere you go.
And tell me all the secrets
only you and I would – you and I would know.
Your sketchbook.
Your eyes would always be on me,
And then I'd know the world that you see.
