Chapter 1: moving in

Chapter Text

Chapter 1/ day 1 moving in

I finally moved out of my hometown to Detroit. I managed to save up enough money from my job straight out of college to get a nice spot all by myself on the west side of town, and not to brag but it's pretty nice. i park my car after a several hour drive to the complex. I get out to pick up my key and finally stretch my legs. The sun has already set and the cold air envelops me when i open my door. i head up to the second floor to see if the place looks as good as it did in the pictures. as i inspect the kitchen and living room i hear my neighbor come home and unlock his door. Should i introduce myself to them? Do people do that in apartments? What should i do? As i turn my head to go back and open my door the sound of their door slamming shut. Well i blew my chance, maybe i don't have to interact with anyone. That sounds kind of lonely. I am in a one-bedroom apartment and im too scared to say hi to my neighbor. i turn my head back around and walk to my room. Everything seems to be working fine so i go to my car and after many trips all of my things are in my new place. im exhausted. I have a week and half until i start my new job as an advertiser for an up-and-coming fashion brand. It sounds pretentious but graphic design is my passion!!!1!11! so I have a week to unpack and maybe introduce myself to whoever slams their door next to me. I should make my bed and door dash some thai food.

RILEY

I have to get this video edited by tonight, so i guess i won't be sleeping. After emailing back and forth with a new sponsor they need to see the video done by 7 am tomorrow morning. Is it too much to ask for some sleep? I sloppily park my car and trudge into my complex. As i walk up to my room, i see my neighbor's door close. I let out a sigh, hopefully theyre not loud so after tonight i can sleep. God knows these walls are thin, but i need to worry about this video. As i close my door i realize i was too hard and slammed it. Fuck. whatever I probably won't see them much because im at the office so much, so thats good. I think. I head over to my couch in the living room and open my laptop and start working. I hear a knock at my neighbor's door. Should i say hi? I mean it was awkward with the last guy so maybe i should introduce myself, just to break the ice. As i debate in my head im snapped back into reality by the sounds of grants laugh. I need to focus. I also need coffee. As i head to my Keurig i wonder who my neighbor was and who was at the door. A friend? A partner? Family? At this point a mental break from editing is what i need, and this mysterious person is the perfect distraction. As i wait for my coffee to finish brewing i pause and take a deep breath. Maybe i should introduce myself to them, but what do i say? ‘Hi im riley im in 203 and i dont always slam my door’ you know what, I'll just talk to them tomorrow. if i can function then.

I told the food delivery person to knock at the door in case i fall asleep, i guess i shouldn't do that since the walls are so thin. The food was amazing though, and it gave me an extra push to unpack some kitchen utensils. Honestly besides whatever is going on next door im pretty excited for my first day in Detroit. Hopefully there is no more slamming doors so i can go to sleep and stay asleep. I drag my legs to my new bed and once my head hits my pillow i drift into sleep.
