Work Text:

Wings spread and close, engines fire up, chain belts rattle, crowds in rapture.

God is silent, no matter how much He screams.

Chachamaru can hardly think of a more peaceful place in this country. It puts her in such a good mood, she could even grace the stupid sponsors and try their drink—bleh, did they dump the entirety of their sugar imports in this crap!? Where is the Health Committee? Is that even a thing? Was it those guys Shishiku tortured and killed? That barely narrows it down, actually.

Another sound knocks on her door, a fleeting melody, the bell of glass as the Princess skirts one lithe finger around the rim of her drink. Head down, eyes swimming somewhere inside the seedy liquid.

A little like—like she's dreaming.

Dream within a dream. A Western weirdo would probably love to make a pretentious shitty movie out of this.

“What's up, Princess? One whiff of dear Brother and you're off to longing land?”

“Do not make me repeat myself." Lofty closing of the eyes, voice of steel and balsam both. "There is no point in longing for something already as good as yours."

Chachamaru has started looking for the emergency bag of popcorn, reserved for cases of the Princess' BigBrotherants, when she feels the pause in the speech and the slanted look turned her way. “In fact, you seem more distracted, Lord Chachamaru.”

“Nah, just checking on my brothers and sisters.” She wiggles her brow towards a crux, disqualified and disassembled; sleep well. “Big Bro is nice and all, but family is family, you know?”

“Family…” The Princess plays one more note from the song of glass, tries the word on her tongue—but doesn't seem to even sense the taste. “So the one thing you share is enough to make them your family?”

One thing. One single damn thing, neither she nor her brothers and sisters would choose for each other, or themselves.

It's still more than she has ever shared with anyone made of flesh.

“Guess so.”

“Then, have you asked your family?” Ah, that's the Princess Chachamaru loves the most; the one who knows to hit where it hurts. “If they can hear God?”

“They keep their secrets—we're the distant kind of siblings, you see.” A last gulp of the atrocious drink, the vestiges of water coming in through a marsh of sugar sediment. Fucking gross, man. “They don't care, and I don't care, as long as I'm the only one that gets to end Him. That's all there is to it… Yutsuzu.”

And then—the sky opens up—a thunder—a beautiful sound—the Princess laughs, wholehearted and vicious.

Chachamaru hears God and laughs with Him.
