Check The Label, Dear

Summary:

Malipo Kinich believes that everything in the world comes at a price.

And so, he attempts to reconcile the price for the unexplainable sensation he feels whenever he meets a certain blonde in his university. The price, or perhaps, the lack thereof, anyway.

Notes:

Good day, dearest readers.

Allow me to first greet you a Happy New Year.

The festivities have once more transpired. I must apologize that I have failed to supply an apt present for Christmas the previous year. I believe that I do have a documents in my draft involving Scaramouche and Aether once more, but... I am unfortunately unable to continue its ending due to... a number of reasons sufficient enough to render both the brat and I helpless during the last week of December.

Anyway, my anecdotes should not be the focus of this article, no? Henceforth, I shall not stall you any further.

I do pray that you enjoy this work. Should you feel there are critical tags that are should be added, by all means, inform me. Of course, any and all comments are absolutely welcome. In fact, I express my gratitude to you this early on for giving this piece a fraction of your precious time. That alone is already sufficient enough to encourage me to continue down this path... whenever time permits, anyway.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Nothing in this world is free.

That was the philosophy Malipo Kinich religiously abided by.

In this world, where power, manifested as wealth, is the deciding factor of all things, services and goods rendered for free appeal to him as rather impractical and obsolete. After all, most humans, if not all, are egoistic in nature. For anyone, survival is a priority— one that is highly dependent on their financial status. This is precisely why every single cent spent must be of a worthy price— to spend excessively is to deprive yourself of financial stability and liberty, which will eventually leave you at the mercy of the rich and the powerful.

Unfortunately, the rich and the powerful are anything but merciful.

Still, Kinich is not particularly fond of receiving things for free either. He believes that all things come at a price— be it material or not. While he prefers spending time in his lonesome, secluded away in a far corner of his school’s rooftop, it cannot be denied that he is a rather popular talk amongst his schoolmates. People have mixed reactions about him— while some despise him for always charging for even the simplest of tasks, some do admit that he is willing to help them even for the most difficult tasks: most of which he accomplishes with a few mistakes, if not flawlessly.

“Kinich? Ah, he once charged me 100 Mora just to copy his homework! Talk about a bummer…”

“Kinich? You mean that guy who’s always at the rooftop? Well, he did help me cram my paper in 12 hours, for the price of 1000 Mora… It’s a fairly reasonable price, so I went for it.”

“Kinich? Hehehe… I think he’s kinda… handsome…”

“Well… last Valentine’s Day, I made him some chocolates… a day later, I found some chocolates in my bag, along with a note apologizing that he couldn’t make chocolates. While I did feel awkward at first… hehehe… I think it’s kinda cute…”

Blessed with both physical and mental prowess, Kinich had everything he needed. He is fair and just— impartial for his charges, even for his friends. While some dislike the fact that he charges for his services, others are amazed that he charges fairly and reasonably. When doing things that require purchasing, he returns all the invoices, and even does a detailed financial report of his duties. Perhaps that was why most people entrusted him to be the treasurer of the student council— a position that neither ran for nor wanted. In simpler terms, he woke up one day with a seat in the council, without even himself knowing that he was nominated for the position.

He attempted to reject the position prior to his induction, but as far as he knew, no one was willing to take his place.

He eventually came to terms with it, weighing in that the position comes with prestige and experience; not to mention, another achievement to put in his curriculum vitae and future resumès. It was bothersome, but he treated it as a commission that had a higher return investment in the future. At least he could establish connections outside school through his projects.

Then came their secretary.

A darling of the crowd: Aether Viator.

Perhaps most knew him through his twin sister Lumine, who was a rather popular woman in school. Everyone respected her— some even feared her, especially after she gave the “reigning” bullies a harsh beating after they picked on one of her classmates. Ever since that incident, bullying became a minor problem in school. Everyone hailed her a hero for protecting those who cannot protect themselves— perhaps that was why she was elected the council president.

As compared to Lumine, her brother Aether was a more… gentle and timid person. He was the type of person who always wore a smile on his face, and was willing to help, even without a price. People often compare him to Kinich— with the only distinction that Aether doesn’t do the task for them. He simply guides them to their goal, never doing it on their behalf. Whenever people try to copy his assignment, he brings them to a library and teaches them the method on how to solve the items, before reminding them to always do their homework. Likewise, he was also known for being a class secretary— the one who reminds the entire class of their homeworks, due dates, and projects on the daily. Perhaps that was why everyone wanted to be his classmate, which eventually led to his election as a secretary.

Some call it nepotism or political dynasty, but most agreed that they needed Aether in the council more than he needed himself there. As far as they were concerned, the twins were extremely talented in their own right, and having both of them leading the school ensured their well-being.

After all, the council‘s current projects were aptly reflected.

Every week, Aether meets with class secretaries to obtain information for everyone’s schedules, and uploads a detailed and interactive calendar on the council’s social media platforms. Likewise, he also collates all of Kinich’s financial reports and uploads them for transparency.

In short, Lumine’s term, as well as the assemblage of her officers, was the greatest the academy has seen in a while. Even for Kinich, who thought that the previous installation of officers were rather lazy, lax, and ran for the sole reason of having inputs in their CVs , he found the current council to be efficient in representing the student body, with a clean work ethic.

But then again, nothing was free.

The price for being a council member… was foregoing his privacy.

Specifically, his daily rooftop sessions.

“Hi there, Kinich!” He looked up and saw Aether.

“Aether.” He nodded. “…Is there something you need?” He asked, hoping that there were no more financial reports to be discussed, or no more meetings to attend to in this hour. As far as he was concerned, he wanted to have his siesta time remain a siesta time.

“Well… nothing much.” Aether smiled. “I just noticed that you were in this spot.”

“Hm…” Kinich hummed. Of course, he was in this spot. Most people knew of the unspoken rule that the space between the wall and the water tank belonged to Malipo Kinich during lunchtime.

“I usually take the spot on the other side of the wall… but today…” He buried his head in his palms. “Let’s just say it was occupied…”

“That’s unfortunate,” Kinich responded nonchalantly, though the redness of the blonde’s ears as he tried to keep away his face suggested that he probably saw something that he should not have seen in his spot. Kinich could ridicule him inwardly at how flustered he looked at the time, but the consequence of Aether not having his spot back was that he was forced to lodge with him.

He was not complaining that Aether was there.

Rather, he was complaining that Aether had to be there, instead of his original spot.

“Oh, uhm… I hope you don’t mind if I stay here. B-But if you want, I’ll keep quiet! Or I can just find another place, too!” Aether stammered. “S-Sorry for bothering you—“

“… you can stay.” Kinich relented, closing his eyes. “It’s not like I own the place.”

“Oh… uh… thank you.” Aether smiled.

Kinich eventually drifted to sleep that afternoon. When he awoke, he saw nothing but the setting sun, a coat acting as his blanket, and a note in his hand.

“Sorry! I need to meet with the 9th Grade Secretaries… Take my coat for a while! Thanks for letting me stay with you. ~ Aether”

Kinich folded the note before pocketing it. It was a rather chilly afternoon, with the autumn winds starting to whisper into his ears. He smiled inwardly as he removed the coat from his body and folded it neatly. He stretched for a while, before deciding to return to the council room to see Aether slumped weakly against his laptop, arranging his financial reports and his academic calendar. Hoping to return the favor, he draped the coat over the secretary and left him another note. He took his belongings and left the room, leaving the blonde with the air conditioning unit on a low fan setting, before letting his sister know that her brother was still in the room.

“Feel free to find me there anytime. “

Ever since then, the cycle continued. They would sit at the rooftop until one or the other dozes off, and whoever wakes up first leaves their coat as their blanket. Before falling asleep, Aether would talk about his childhood— his dream of becoming a teacher, his fondness of his sister, and his love for his parents. He believes that education was the first step in solving much of society’s problems— a sentiment that Kinich agreed with. He saw enough when Aether volunteered himself as a teacher during one of the council’s educational outreach projects. It unearthed and unraveled the complex character beneath that warm smile— one that Kinich has grown to appreciate. While Aether did try to get into Kinich’s own life sometimes, he was wise enough not pry into it too much. Knowing that Kinich was orphaned at a young age was a bold enough warning for him to halt from pursuing anything too sensitive about his personal life.

Despite that however, Kinich must say that he… grew to enjoy the blonde’s company. Every detail of the blonde’s face as they talked about the upcoming projects, their academics, and their interests were engraved into his mind, like fire searing itself into wood. He looked dazzling— ethereal even. Every sunset appeared so ephemeral for Kinich.

But then again… perhaps Aether kept him company simply because Kinich willingly welcomed him into that spot. Otherwise, he’d probably still be on the other side of the wall, sleeping soundly, instead of babbling about the most random things. He’d like to think that Aether enjoyed his company, too, but without his validation, he knew it was mere conjecture.

Things eventually grew… a bit awkward for them.

He could catch Aether glancing at him from time to time every council meeting, or he would find himself looking at Aether as he reports the outcomes of his tasks. On how they would flinch when their hands brush past each other when handing papers, or how Kinich’s cheeks would flush red when he sees Aether do a tiny wave when they meet in the cafeteria… or maybe on how he smiles whenever he sees Aether feeding the kittens in the alleyway down the road. He was a man pure of heart. Everything about him seemed too enticing.

“Oh my gosh… Kinich? Has a crush?!”

Perhaps opening it up to his friend Mualani was his greatest mistake yet.

“It would be nice to keep your voice down, Mualani.” He scoffed. “You sound like Ajaw screaming all that into the school.”

“Hey! Don’t compare me to that munchkin!” She stuck a tongue out. “But seriously, the Malipo Kinich has a crush?!” She squealed. “You’ve got to tell me all about them! Where did you meet? Do they go to this school? Are we in the same grade? Oh, oh— do they swim?!”

“That last question was rather unrelated and unnecessary.” Kinich pressed his temples. “In addition, I never said they were my crush . As far as I am concerned, I really don’t have time for it.”

“Yeah, yeah, you say that. But in reality, you’re starting to fall deep into it!” She shook his shoulders. “Honestly, if they’re really hanging out with you for hours, that’s a sign!” She nodded. “But knowing you, you’re probably thinking that they’re doing it since you did them a favor before. Well, it isn’t deadpan Kinich without his nothing is free philosophy…” She puffed her cheeks.

“Tch.” He crossed his arms.

“Don’t ‘tch’ me. I’m just saying… give it a chance.” She mused, sipping her iced tea. “If you want, you could hang out elsewhere… other than the rooftop. See how they interact with their environment. Who knows?” She snickered.

“For the last time, Mualani,” Kinich growled. “I am not in love with anyone.”

“Fine…” Mualani puffed her cheeks. “But then again, they sound like someone who is beloved by many… if they get swept away by someone else, don’t say I didn’t warn ya!” She took another sip of her iced tea. “Yeah, as if someone could even dream of rejecting the Malipo Kinich, anyway.”

He could only pray that her promise of keeping it a secret would hold.

Maybe Lumine was sharper than he expected, or maybe he was being too obvious with his awkwardness with Aether… because he suddenly found himself paired with Aether to shop for the ingredients of the lunch they’ll serve the kids for their next educational outreach program. Given a rather tight budget, Kinich was confident that they could haggle with the vendors to meet everything that was on Xiangling’s list. Thankfully, the Liyuean girl was able to create a dish that was both cost-efficient and universal.

“Here are your radishes.” Ororon smiled. He was an alumna of their academy, and often spends his free time gardening. He eventually had enough to have his own stall in the market, and for all its money’s worth, the quality of his produce was always top-notch. He was the council’s frequent supplier for vegetables and other produce, and most of the time, he provided it for free. Kinich was always reluctant to accept the radishes without a price— something remedied by his Granny Citlali, who mandated that Ororon treat Kinich and Aether as customers, and must therefore be charged. Given that they were his juniors in school, however, Citlali suggested that he give them a 20% discount.

“Thanks, Ororon.” Aether smiled. “Sorry, do you have any kale, too?”

“Uhh…” Ororon scratched his head. “Granny took the last three to make some of those random recipes that she found on social media… Something about healthy living or some sort…” He sighed. “You know how old people do with social media…”

“Ahahaha, I see…” Aether chuckled. “How much was it?”

“Hm… for all the vegetables and your 20% discount, that will be 678 Mora.” He nodded. “Are these for your outreaches, too?”

“Yes.” Kinich replied. “The budget’s a bit tighter nowadays due to some budget cuts implemented by the administration, but we’ll try to make it work.” He took the bag of radishes. “Thanks a lot, Ororon. Please give our regards to Granny Itzli, too.”

“Alright… good luck on the outreach, Aether, Kinich.” He saw them off, with the two waving him a goodbye, before going back to tend to his produce. Kinich and Aether, aiming to maximize the rather tight budget in their pocket, decided to walk the way to school. It wasn’t a lengthy walk either– just a good 10 minute walk from the market. It was a rather quiet day: had it not been for this errand, Kinich figured that he would be up there in that same spot by the rooftop. With all regards, anyway, Malipo Kinich could always be found on that spot around this time, but only a few people were bold enough to break through that steep wall he had effectively constructed around him. Of course, Aether, while not being the first one, was the most remarkable one yet to penetrate through the dense fog which clouded his true self.

The setting sun soon began to dye the sky in its luscious orange color. All that time, Kinich’s eyes were affixed on Aether’s astounding beauty. He’d rather not admit it, but… the blonde had a uniquely perfect face. He posits the notion objectively; he was well aware that a lot of people, both men and women, are after him. That alone speaks volumes of how well-admired Aether is in their school. If anything, the only reason why he has yet to be asked out is because they knew that in order to be Aether’s lover, one must first aspire to be on the same footing as him, lest their necks be snapped by his dearest sister. Only a few people could hope to qualify in that regard. As ego-centric as he may be, Kinich never considered himself to be a candidate for Aether’s hand. Unlike others, he was… very reserved: he could say that his current seat in the student council was primarily against his will. He’d rather return to his mundane life of remaining concealed in the eyes of many, effectively secluded from the hustle and bustle of student life.

Ever since Aether tore through his walls, however… he must admit that he started to enjoy his role as the council’s treasurer.

Wait… why is he considering the possibility that he could be Aether’s…

Boyfriend?

“Kinich!”

Dilated as his thoughts were, he was awakened to reality as a ball hit his head. He watched as the bundle of vegetables that were previously in his arms rolled down the highway. Aether dropped his own bags and rushed to the dark-haired man to check on him. Up close, he could see the features of Aether’s face in greater detail. The way his golden eyes reflect the auburn sky… the way his cheeks were flushed pink, looking so soft and round… the way his button nose adorns the center of his face… and the way his plump, rosy lips looked so kiss–

“Kinich, are you alright?”

–able…

Kinich needed to remind himself that he and Aether were… friends.

Just. Friends.

“Y-Yes…” He cleared his throat. Aether picked up the ball and gave it to the neary children.

“Alright, kids.” Aether puffed his cheeks. “You must always be careful when playing outside! You hit someone right at the head!” He handed the ball to the children, who looked apologetic. “Now, what do you say to him?”

“We’re sorry, big brother…”

“It’s… fine.” Kinich sighed. They were children, after all; a small scolding would do the trick. “But it would be wise to exercise caution. If I get hit by your ball another time…” He furrowed his brows. “I’ll confiscate the ball, and you’ll have to beat me in a game of catch to get it.” He smirked inwardly. “Now, off you go.”

“T-Thanks, misters!” The kids bowed, before running back to their spot. The treasurer pressed his temples as the two started to pick-up the vegetables.

“Beat you in a game of catch? Really?” Aether chuckled. “That’s… quite… childish of you.”

“...” Kinich averted his gaze.

“I like that side of yours.”

That sentence caused a spontaneous combustion in his head. He could imagine every bit of his neurons working overtime just to deliver the message into his brain. He could feel the blood rushing to his face, filling every vessel and capillary with its scarlet glow. He stood there, fazed and spellbound, while the blonde continued to retrieve the fallen tomatoes on the ground. Unfortunately, one of them rolled towards the other side of the road. The blonde ran to retrieve it, unable to witness the car passing his way. The sound of the honking was enough to remove Kinich from his trance, eventually prompting him to warn Aether of the approaching vehicle.

“Aether!" He shouted. "Watch out!"

The blonde could only turn around in shock.

Grinding his teeth, Kinich ran towards the blonde, tackling him out of harm’s way as the car drove past where they were. Alas, he was uncertain if he made it to the other side of the road, as… he was welcomed with a strange yet heavenly sensation. He could only hope that Aether was able to make it out alive… because he was certain that he was in paradise. He was uncertain of why or how he was able to be welcomed into the abode of the divine, but… it felt too… dream-like… like his own lips were resting upon an angel’s own…

Until he opened his eyes and realized that his lips were, in fact, resting on one.

That angel was no other than Aether Viator.

Chapter 2

Notes:

Good day, dearest readers.

Apologies for the overdue. I do understand that it has nearly been half a year since I released this article. Truly, the toils of human life took a rather sizable portion of my time, hardly leaving me any leeway to continue writing. If anything, I wrote these sparingly during my free time, which comes... for the lack of a better idiom to use, once in a blue moon.

Nevertheless, know that I am truly grateful if you chose to continue reading this. I beseech you to pardon any mistakes in spelling or grammar, and I do implore you to point them out. Trust that I shall do my best to incorporate any sort of feedback into my future works.

Without further ado, here is the continuation and denouement of our story. I wish you a happy and joyful reading.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Dura Lex, Sed Lex.

The law is law.

Malipo Kinich is an upright man; he has a strong sense of justice, which is manifested in his daily deeds throughout the campus, both before and after his inauguration as the council’s treasurer. After all, it was his fair insight in the grand turnout of things which paved the way for his occupation. He believes that all favors and deeds should be reciprocated with or without the endorsement of the grantor, through whatever means necessary.

Faced with the heavenly favor of earning a kiss from Aether Viator (albeit accidental), however, he was faced with the dilemma of upholding his principles, or… forgetting about this “favor” and moving on with his life.

The moment he realized that his lips were on top of Aether’s own, he immediately pulled away, averting his gaze as he felt blood rush up his cheeks. He prayed to the divine that none of his friends were here to see him in such a state; he could already imagine Mualani squealing and screaming while taking pictures of him. He glanced to see Aether clutching the tomatoes in his arms, his cheeks mimicking its scarlet color. He was visibly flustered; an emotion that Kinich currently shared, but was unwilling to admit.

“Ahem,” Kinich cleared his throat in an attempt to save his face from further shame. “I-I… apologize. It was…”

“An accident.” Aether finished his sentence. “N-no need to apologize, Kinich. I…” He shifted in his seat. “It’s my fault, so… I completely understand…”

Kinich could only give a slight nod before helping the blonde up, arranging the vegetables in the bag, and finally continuing their way back to the university. They spent the trip in utter silence, both refusing to utter a single word about the incident earlier. Still, Kinich momentarily glances towards Aether’s direction every now and then, finding his beauty ever so eye-catching, magnified further by the setting sun. Every feature of his was eternally adorable, like a precious relic that warrants much protection.

He could hardly believe that those lips of his were, even for one moment, united with his own…

Upon their arrival at the university, they went to Xiangling to help stack the vegetables in the school refrigerator. Kinich was fully aware that he was keeping himself preoccupied in order to avoid speaking with Aether; he knew that a single word would be enough to cause his mind to replay the earlier scene of Aether beneath him, his lips on his, their foreheads joined together on the road to their university.

As they bade farewell to Xiangling, Kinich immediately rushed out to the hall, eager to put as much distance as he could from Aether— a sentiment, he assumed, that the blonde shared. Only that before he could even step out of the wall, Kinich found his hand in Aether’s own.

“Uhm… Kinich…” Aether gulped. “About… earlier…”

Alas, there was no escaping his fate, after all.

“There’s no need for discussion.” Kinich sighed. “There are no favors to be repaid for saving a life.”

Maybe one for having your kiss.

“Well… uhm…” The blonde was visibly flustered; his cheeks turning redder and redder every second. “Please consider this as… payment for earlier.”

“I told you, I don’t need to—“

Once more, that familiar, heavenly sensation enveloped him… only that right now, he could see the secretary’s flustered face more vividly. That, along with the fact that he could savor the blonde’s lips without the threat of being run over by a random car speeding down the highway. He found his hands making their way onto the blonde’s waist, the union of their lips deepening as Aether slung his arms over Kinich’s nape. Beads of sweat started to form on Kinich’s forehead, just in time as the blonde pulled away. Their breaths hitched, pulse rushed, eyelids fleeting in and out of imaginary slumber as Aether immediately ran away past him from the door, leaving an awestruck Kinich at the door.

“Aether, wait—“ Kinich called out, to no avail. He caressed his lips, the sensation of Aether’s kiss leaving a permanent mark on him. Despite the sudden elation, however, Kinich was fully aware that Aether deemed the moments earlier as a “payment” for the earlier incident. It twisted his thought on how Aether viewed the entire fiasco on the road: was it an offense of which the recent kiss was repatriation, or was it a favor of which… the recent kiss was… the payment…?

Kinich would like to believe that it was the latter.

Hopefully, it was the latter, for as fate willed it, their Outreach Mastersheet updated, with Kinich and Aether being deployed more frequently than ever. Nearly every task he had was either paired or grouped with Aether— he was not sure if Lumine did it intentionally, but unless she is that sharp, she would have no reason to do that… unless again, Aether opened this case up with her and wanted to tease her twin brother, but as far as Kinich was concerned, Aether would be too embarrassed to open it up with her. After all, neither of them didn’t expect nor wanted the incident.

Aether didn’t, Kinich assumed.

He could only pray further that this assumption held.

Because he found himself one afternoon, once more, kissing the blonde behind the water tank of the school’s rooftop. He pinned Aether towards the cold, metal surface of the tank as he deepened their kiss, their lips eventually slowly parting to allow their tongues to explore each other. His left hand held Aether’s own against the tank as his right hand held his waist, caressing the gentle curves along the secretary’s body. As he pulled away, he gazed deeply into the blonde’s eyes, their breaths still quick, cheeks flushed red as the setting sun, and brains brimming with a million thoughts.

“Payment.” Kinich said as he wiped his lips. “There was no reason for you to kiss me again when we went home from the market.” He replied. “Consider this my apology for doing it the first time.”

“O-Oh… hahaha…” Aether scratched his cheek. “It’s… nothing… If anything, I should be the one thanking you…” He averted his gaze once more, and Kinich immediately knew that his presence would only aggravate the blonde further. Still, there was a hint of… sadness in Aether’s eyes at that moment, which Kinich brushed off as the sunset reflecting its light on Aether’s ever-golden orbs. Sighing, the raven haired man patted the blonde’s head, stroking his golden locks gently.

“Alright. If that’s all, then… I should get going.” Kinich turned on his heel, eager to hide the still, raging crimson shade on his cheek. “I’ll… see you tomorrow, Aether.”

‘I hope I don’t see you tomorrow, actually.’ Kinich inwardly thought. ‘I just know I couldn’t resist the temptation if I get it.’

Thankfully, the preparations went smoothly. The day of the outreach finally came, and heaven knows it was a success. The children were happy, being served warm and delicious food, courtesy of one of the best cooks Liyue has ever known. With Aether as their teacher, they learned a lot of valuable lessons, from basic reading and writing, counting numbers, and to playing games. Even for Kinich, the smiles on the children’s faces were sufficient as payment for all the stress and hard work which came with the preparation for this project. In a locality where education manifests itself as a privilege and not a right, projects like these make a difference to compensate for the lack of action of… the “higher-ups,” for the lack of a better term.

Still, a pang of guilt dawned upon Kinich. He… was noticeably more distant against Aether throughout the remainder of the preparations, and while his heart would thump louder and louder the more moments they shared together, his mind would force him to shun this loud beat within his chest in favor of escaping being within the same space as the blonde. He attempted to be discreet with it, wary to not communicate the distance as disdain against the blonde. Whenever Aether would sit down beside him in his usual spot, he would rather not pay attention to him, allowing him to talk about their day, choosing instead to admire the beauty of the setting sun.

Still, Kinich knew that its beauty cannot match the marvel the person beside him possesses. That was why he strived not to gaze at Aether’s face too much; one look, and all those silly little butterflies Ajaw had been pestering him about would come fluttering back into his stomach. He could only lie there in silence, his eyes only affixed to the sky, or to the darkness brought about by his closed eyelids.

Whenever he sees Aether by the hallways, he’d just give him a nod and speed past him, not even stopping by to give him a second look. It has escalated to a point where he needed to lie about having a promised meet-up with Mualani and Kachina just to escape Aether’s invites to eat together at the cafe, or hang out at the rooftop. While Kinich did appreciate that Aether was willing to overlook that one, crucial moment a few weeks ago, there was… something in him which always constricted his mind, seemingly unable to forget everything about that kiss: from the warmth of the blonde’s proximity to him, to the softness and sweetness of his lips.

Overtime, this… awkwardness has soon manifested itself towards other people. In particular, his roommate, Ajaw, was one of the first people who noticed the sudden shift in the dynamic between Aether and Kinich.

“Quit moping around, our humble servant,” Ajaw paced around Kinich as he worked on his finance reports. “I know what’s on your mind. ‘Ah, I get to see Aether again tomorrow, gotta hide!’ ” He cackled, making a quoting gesture with his fingers. “Pfft, you honestly think hiding from him would solve your problems?” He puffed his cheeks. “Assuming that there are.”

“Assumptions are oftentimes made to justify the inadequacy of information, Ajaw.” Kinich responded nonchalantly. “I must warn you against making such a frivolous statement. You risk not only damaging my reputation, but also Aether’s.” He eyed him. “And I suppose that since you have the courage to come up with such a bold statement, I’m sure you could also go toe-to-toe with Lumine, hm?”

“G-gah?! Lumine?!” Ajaw shivered. “Okay, okay! I’ll stop!” He grumbled. “But I kinda mean it, though. Ignoring and distancing yourself from him won’t do you any good! Soooo I say, stop being a coward and just talk to him!”

Alas, Kinich could only wave a white flag in his mind.

After all, Ajaw did hit it right on the spot.

The second person to confront him about it, however, was the she-devil herself. Or so was the moniker Ajaw gave the president of the student council: none other than Lumine Viatrix herself.

It started the day Kinich decided to skip the rooftop and take a nap in the council office. He could only think that Aether would be there on their usual spot, sitting in his lonesome, watching the beautiful sunset without him by his side. Still, Kinich believed it was for the best… yes, it was for the best if they err to the side of caution to prevent… unfavorable things from progressing.

“It’s quite the surprise to see you here, you know.” Kinich looked up to see Lumine standing by the door, her back pressed against the door frame, a carton of quenepa berry juice in hand. She sipped her drink as her eyes scrutinized the raven haired man, before heaving a sigh. “Alright, I’ll cut to the chase.”

“Is there something wrong?” Kinich inquired warily.

“With me? No. With you and Aether? Maybe.” Lumine placed her drink down on the table. “Ever since I sent you both on an errand, your dynamics… shifted. You both seemed off, and… well, uncomfortable with each other.” She crossed her arms. “Usually at this hour, I’d catch the two of you sneaking to the rooftop, or see you both eating snacks by the cafe, but… none of those lately. It’s like a habit that has been discontinued.” Lumine sighed once more. “Aether may be my brother, but I cannot risk the quality of our projects knowing that there may be potential discomfort between those working within it.”

“There… is nothing wrong.” Kinich concealed his worries behind a handkerchief, conveniently placed in front of his nose. “Plus, you could always ask Aether if there is.”

“Believe me, I tried. That kid is stubborn as a cow. He doesn’t talk about his own feelings often, and would always respond that he’s doing fine even what I see with my own two eyes says otherwise.” Lumine shrugged.

“There really is nothing wrong.” Kinich repeated. “Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe we pulled the project just fine, no?”

“Of course you would. Otherwise, I would have killed you both.” Lumine chuckled. “Listen, Kinich… I don’t mean to intrude into whatever it is that’s going on between the two of you. Aether’s a big boy now, and unless it becomes too severe, I really wouldn’t want to meddle in his affairs. But in a professional setting, this is not the type of relationship I aim to foster in the council, nor in the school in general.” She patted his head. “I hope you could resolve whatever it was. Trust me that I will have no influence on Aether’s side, too.”

And so it was. Lumine was truly a woman of her word.

For the succeeding projects, none of Kinich’s projects involved Aether. The only time they collaborated was when processing the financial reports, but Kinich understood that it was the job of both the secretary and the treasurer, not Kinich and Aether. For the subsequent weeks and months this avoidant dynamic continued. It stung Kinich that he would sometimes see Aether on that spot– their spot– on the rooftop, gazing at the sun, or sleeping without a coat on. It pained him that Aether would still try to open up to him whenever the chance arose, and it pained him more that he was almost always forced to deflect using whatever convenient reason there was. Picking-up Kachina from school? Buying drinks for Mualani? Delivering some vegetables from Ororon? Taking Ajaw to Dr. Ifa? He was running out of excuses, just as he was running out of the will to keep up with these charades.

But if he didn’t… he doesn’t know what else to do.

That was until one day, he didn’t see Aether in their spot by the rooftop. He furrowed his brows as he attempted to scan the area silently, wary that there may be someone else in close proximity.

He hid behind the wall to peek behind the water tank. There, he saw what he was looking for.

There was Aether. He looked as pristine and lovely as the first dawn to ever grace Teyvat. Yet he could tell that even with his eyes closed, they were sore and puffy, with visible tear stains by his cheeks.

What caused his breath to hitch, however, was the fact that Aether wasn’t alone.

He was leaning onto the shoulders of Xiao, a rather aloof student in their class. Kinich knew that Xiao was equally as good when it came to academics and task management. In fact, he was also one of the potential candidates to the Operations Manager for the council by popular demand, but one look from those sharp and piercing eyes of his was enough to silence anyone who dared nominate him for a position. His cold personality caused a dark mist of mystery to enshroud him– much like Kinich himself.

And much like Kinich himself… perhaps this was once more dispelled by Aether.

He gulped as he silently retreated back into the staircase, his pulse rushing through his veins.

Aether was with someone else.

That spot they once shared was now occupied by someone else.

He wanted to dismiss it as a one-time thing, but… it didn’t. The next day, he saw the two of them together at the cafe. The next day, he saw them together fetching vegetables from Ororon. The next, he was taking him home. All the voids that Kinich once left Aether with were now slowly being patched up with another.

Something bubbled within Kinich. It felt strange and foreign, like a burning sensation he never felt before. And something tells him it wasn’t his sense of pride… because whenever his clients are unsatisfied with his services, they always look for another person to do the task. That was the norm in this world, and this should have been no exception.

Only that it was, and the more time Xiao and Aether spent together, the greater the tension in his chest became. There was a sour feeling of dread pushing down his throat, too harsh and too rabid to be described. It came to a point where he lost all inspiration and vigor for both his academics and commissions. Even council work started to seem more of a chore than he thought it out to be. Whenever he would work with Aether, he would always find the blonde always looking at his phone every now and then, as if he was expecting… something. Unwilling to make things more awkward than it is, he decided to do what he does best in times like this: ignore, ignore, and ignore, until it all subsides.

But then again, only that it didn’t. If anything, every passing day that he attempts to figure out this entanglement within his psyche drains him further and further of his physical and mental capacity.

“… You’re jealous.”

Mualani placed it in front of him, bluntly and squarely.

“You’re jealous that all the things that you thought were exclusive to you were suddenly taken by another person. And you’re a little bit afraid that that person may be doing a better job than you in keeping that space.” Mualani sipped her tea as the raven-haired man pressed his temples. “Honestly, I know you’re quite egoistic, but this is on a completely different level. Pushing them away to suppress the weird stuff you feel inside you won’t really do either of you a favor.“

“It’s not like that.” Kinich complained.

“Okay, let me rephrase it,” Mualani raised a finger. “You’re afraid to admit that you fell in love with someone, and you’re even more afraid that they don’t see you that way? When they're clearly doing their best to patch things up with you?” She pulled slightly at her friend’s locks. “The weird stuff inside you is normal! Love is weird! It’s literally one of the most indescribable feelings in the whole world!” She pulled harder in frustration, much to the man’s dismay.

“Ouch!”

“Ugh, you’re making this a little more complicated than it should be! Just talk to the person already!” Mualani exclaimed. “…before it’s too late.”

“… what do you mean?”

“Oh my—“ She sighed. “You know, for a smart and top-notch student, you’re dumber than a rock when it comes to this stuff.”

Alas, that was an insult that he could not contest.

“But don’t worry. It does make most people dumb.” She shrugged. “But anyway, it’s already happening in front of you! The person you like is already being targeted by someone else! If you don’t make a move soon, you’ll end up losing them!” She pouted. “But then again, who knows? It’s not like that person is as popular as you… or Aether…” She closed her eyes in contemplation. “Come to think of it… there have been some rumors that he and Xiao are da—“

The sentence was interrupted by the sound of Kinich’s soda can being crushed by his hand.

“—ting…”

“…”

“Oh…” Mualani’s eyes widened. “Oh…”

“…” Kinich averted his gaze. “I… have some things I need to attend to.”

“Not so fast, Mister Deadpan!” Mualani pulled him by his hand. “You’ve got a lot of explaining to do!”

And just like that, Kinich found himself, once more, on a hotseat. Mualani grilled him for the next three hours, remarking on how stupid and dumb he was for doing all that to Aether. While Kinich argued that it was for the best, Mualani insisted that “only Aether could decide what’s best for himself,” and that Kinch should “man up, apologize, make amends, and even confess if he wanted.”

But Mualani did acknowledge that he needed time to prepare for the last part. Confessing while they are visibly in a disarray isn’t exactly the best thing to do. Days passed with their rift ever growing. Occasional glances and waves constituted the entirety of their interactions–  a far throw from the joint napping, snacking, and shopping they shared. Every day, he’ll see Aether’s joyful facade plastered in the hallway, like a shining star amidst the crowd… and every evening, in the silence of the rooftop, he’ll also see the sorrows and hope housed behind those eyes.

But nothing changed. Kinich wanted to scramble to his side, comfort him in his own little way. But he simply couldn’t. He could only watch from afar, just like he has always had since their falling-out.

He went home one night, after failing to find Aether on the rooftop, walking down the road he used to walk the blonde as they returned to their respective abodes. The sun had set, and the stars shone brightly. Kinich looked up, enamoured by its beauty— one that only Aether could surpass. Looking back, why did he… choose to do that in the first place? Was he afraid that Aether would think differently of him? Was he afraid that the relationship wouldn’t be the same, transactional relationship he was used to?

Was there… any danger in that?

So many questions rushed into his mind, like a surge of pyroclastic debris spewing out from the volcanoes of Natlan. Mualani’s words seared through his mind, every syllable etching itself into every neuron in his body. Still, she highlighted two fundamental truths in their talk.

First, that the final verdict will ultimately fall on Aether.

And second, that until that verdict was passed, Aether will not be his, and is therefore, available for everyone’s pursuit.

His eyes started to fog up amidst the pale moonlight that gently caressed the clouds. He passed by the road where they accidentally kissed– to the nearby park where the children were playing. ‘If that incident never happened,’ Kinich thought as he continued to tread down the path. ‘Would I still have the right to remain by your side?’ He sighed briefly as he smiled lightly.

Aether was everything anyone could ever want.

But even Kinich knew a side of him that hardly anyone else knows– the clumsy, vulnerable side of him that he buried beneath a near seamless facade of smiles and laughter.

Just as he crossed into the park, he saw a lone, solitary figure sitting on the swing, feet dangling as they gazed at the far-off distance. There was Aether, all alone and by himself… Kinich wanted to sprint home, collapse under his blankets, and sleep through this feeling of his, wanting to run away again, damning whatever Ajaw and Mualani had said… but somehow, he found his legs frozen… even from a distance, he could notice how puffy Aether’s eyes were.

Damn it!

Kinich threw all his plans to mull it over and walked over to where Aether was sitting, making sure to make a quick detour around the bushes to allow him to emerge from his back. He took off his coat and carefully draped it on Aether’s shoulders, feeling the latter shake lightly upon the surprising contact.

“It’s a cold night. Your nose is already puffy enough.” Kinich said, handing the blonde a handkerchief. “We can’t afford getting sick during the midterms.”

“Oh… uh… thank you, Kinich…” Aether smiled, taking the handkerchief in his hands, but not using it. “I… just needed to pass some time alone, that’s all… I’ll be home shortly, don’t worry.” He smiled lightly. “I won’t overstay my welcome, so… don’t worry if you plan to use this swing. Just… give me a few more minutes, please?” He turned to beam the brightest, yet most melancholic smile the raven-haired man has seen in a while.

“What?” Kinich furrowed his brows. “There’s… no need to—“

“I couldn’t help but notice it. And I don’t exactly blame you for it.”  Aether smiled softly. “After all, what I did was… a little unwarranted, no?” He smiled. “It’s alright. You wouldn’t have to put up with me anymore.” The blonde stood up and stretched his arms, taking the coat off. “I plan to step down as the council secretary by Monday.” He mused, causing the Natlanese’s eyes to widen. “Don’t worry. Nilou would be a perfect substitute, and I’ll be sure to orient her properly regarding our work.”

“W-What—“

“I’m so sorry, Kinich. I’m very sorry.” Aether bit his lips as he struggled to hold the tears brimming in his eyes. “Thank you… for taking care of me.” He handed the coat over to the treasurer, who took it unaware, his eyes still wide from the sudden information regarding Aether’s resignation. His hands struggled to keep hold of the coat as Aether flashed him a warm smile, before turning onto his heel.

“Good night, Kinich.”

Beads of sweat started to form on his forehead as he watched the blonde slowly pace away from their spot. The millions of questions in his mind nearly quadrupled in number with every step the blonde took.

“Was he alright?”

“Did I cause this?”

“Why did he need to resign?”

“What happened with Xiao?”

“Was it because of the kiss?”

“What will he do with them?”

“Does he like me?”

“Should I go after him?”

Of all the questions in his head, there was only one for which he had a certain answer.

After a few seconds of contemplation, he sprinted to the blonde, catching him by the wrist before he could take another step out of the park. Kinich swallowed the lump in his throat as he gazed upon the blonde’s teary face, his eyes red, and his nose even redder than when he saw him.

“Kinich, I—“

“Aether—“

“Please, don’t make this harder—“

“If this was about the kiss—“

“I know, I know you hate me for it, and no apology could compensate for my actions… the least I could do is put more distance between us, so please… until we graduate… just until then—“

“Aether!” Kinich raised his voice, loud enough to cause the blonde to stop. “Put some more distance between us? Bullshit.” He cursed, as he imagined the horror of Aether disappearing from his life fully after graduation. “Don’t… you even dare think about that.”

“… what?”

“Why are you thinking all of this? I never said I hated the kiss!”

“B-But… you seem to avoid me all the time…”

“Fuck…” Kinich pressed his temples. “I’m the one who needs to apologize…”

“What do you mean?”

“… I did that because I was afraid, too.’ Kinich gritted his teeth. “I was scared that you hated me because of that kiss… that I may have taken your first away… and maybe I was also scared that you didn’t see me that way…” Kinich further confessed. “I was afraid that you were in love with Xiao or something, and… I would only get in the way…”

“X-Xiao?!” Aether’s cheeks flushed red. “W-We’re only good friends! Plus, I did tell him that… I was already in love with someone else.” He attempted to conceal his scarlet cheeks in the moonlight.

“… I… see…” A pang of pain struck Kinich’s heart when he heard that Aether was in love with someone else. “Then… uh… I wish you the best with your… uh… lover.” A sour feeling of jealousy surged down his throat. “But I hope we can still be civil with each other at school. Lumine’s getting worried, too, you know?”

“Oh… uh… thank you, Kinich.” The raven-haired man could recognize the sad smile on Aether’s lips. “W-Will do! I’ll do my best on our next projects!” He nodded. “Oh, and you could use the rooftop, too! I’ll find a new spot somewhere, so—“

“… no…” Kinich stammered.

“H-Huh?”

“That spot on the rooftop… isn’t special without you, Aether.” Kinich could feel something burn inside him. “Why look for somewhere else when you could just use the same spot like you’ve always had?” Kinich reasoned. “That spot would always be available for you, Aether… don’t look for somewhere else… don’t look for someone else…”

Held the blonde’s hands deep in his palms, his words being a silent plea.

“Please don’t leave me again…”

“But that’s… your spot…” Aether said. “I don’t want to intrude unwelcome in your leisurely time.”

“It’s not an intrusion when you’re welcome, Aether.” Kinich held his cheeks. “Shit, I look like an idiot right now, don’t I…”

“Kinich?”

“I was just trying to piece together my statements… but it seems like I can’t after all, huh…” Kinich pinched his temples, knowing that as of the moment, his face was mired with the reddest of hues that rivaled Natlan’s flames. “Punch me if you need to. There is also a 50% chance that your sister and your lover will kill me, but I can’t afford to lose this deal, so I’m gambling my everything.” Kinich declared, bringing their foreheads together. I’m sorry that I don’t have the proper words to say right now…”

“Kinich…?”

Three.

Kinich's lips trembled.

Two.

His eyes closed down.

One.

“I like you, Aether.”

That, and a swift motion to unite their lips effectively sealed Kinich’s fate to the whims of the blonde’s heart and the threads of love. He was uncertain of what may befall him in the near future: from the moments after they part, to the days they may or may not spend together as a consequence of this act. Nevertheless, part of him wished to stop time; to stay frozen in this moment forever, eternally in the arms of the person he held so dear. He had no explanation for any inquiry that may come thereafter, no response to any accusation that may be directed his way once this is all over. What he only knew was that he was there, with Aether, lips together, and not a single care in the world.

If only this kiss would signify the fullness of their hearts…

If only this would give them the label they oh so desired.

“... You can punch me now.” Kinich whispered as they parted. “Just… not on the face, please. I can’t risk Ajaw mocking me day and night for it.”

“Kinich, you…!” Aether gritted his teeth under his breath. The raven haired man closed his eyes as he prepared for the impending sting towards his stomach, only to feel Aether’s hands on his cheeks, pulling him closer. “You don’t need to tell me that in a fashionable way.” He chuckled. “What you said was more than enough to draw me closer to you every single second.” He laughed as this time, Aether initiated the union of their lips, his hands eventually making their way to the Natlanese’s neck, deepening their kiss further and further.

“Uh… uh…” It was safe to say that Kinich was left speechless as they parted the second time. “Is there… anything I need to do as payment?”

“Kinich, what the…” Aether pressed his temples, suppressing his inward laugh.

“You didn’t really have to kiss me out of pity. I’ll make it up to you, I pro–” The raven haired man’s trance was interrupted by a sudden peck from the blonde.

“For an immensely intelligent and wise man,” Aether sighed. “You’re… seemingly like a doofus regarding these types of things…”

“Mualani told me exactly that.” Kinich agreed. “Then, does that kiss mean…?”

“Yes, yes. It does.” Aether laughed. “Archons above, let me spell it out for you… I like you, too, Kinich. Always had, too.” The blonde smiled. “Just putting it out there for whatever god or archon you want to bear witness.” Aether held Kinich’s hand as he shouted to the starlit sky.

“Aether Viator and Malipo Kinich are dating!” He exclaimed, further dyeing Kinich’s cheeks red.

“A-Aether!”

“Just letting them know. So, uhm…” He smiled sheepishly. “You don’t have to worry about uh… kissing me anymore…” He averted his gaze, his golden irises reflecting the resplendent moonlight. “No need to check the label,”

The sight of Aether’s smiling face amidst the beauty of starlight was one that Kinich would forever treasure in his heart.

“Dear.”

Notes:

Thus, the story concludes.

I am currently penning these notes from the cold confines of our laboratory. Indeed, staying in such a frigid place could be... concerning. Nevertheless, I am not one to complain about the cold. After all, the immense heat scorching this country dry warrants a cool place of solace, which, for me, came in the form of our laboratory.

The brat and I previously went for a fieldwork towards the northern parts of our country roughly two weeks ago. Collection of samples were enjoyable; the afternoon-long analysis of them, however... was beyond excruciating. I cannot fathom that we failed to find even just a single ostracod from nearly a kilogram of sediment we collected. Whether or not it was coincidence or a mere... "skill issue," however, I shall leave for our mentors to evaluate. I suppose the highlight of our trip was the snorkeling activity, in which we were able to witness countless Tridacna (a giant clam) species in their natural habitat. We also inspected the foreslope of a coral reef. The sudden plunge from the visible corals to empty darkness was truly horrifying yet... seemingly enticing. Nevertheless, I can confidently say that the brat enjoyed this trip to observe modern carbonate environments.

As for me... I want nothing more than to return to my dormancy once this semester ends. The brat is now an adult, and I trust that they will be able to protect themselves. While I maintain my own reservations about entrusting them to others... I can at least rest easy, knowing that they are in the company of people who would care for them.

Ah, and yes, while inspecting the coral reefs, majority of our companions (the child and I included), were stung by small jellyfishes. I cannot aptly describe their taxonomy, but thankfully, they were not lethal. If anything, their stings were rather... ticklish to me. I suppose that suits their equally adorable size.

Anyway, I suppose that is enough stories for now. I do hope those who would wish for Kinich in the latter half of the patch a stroke of luck. Once more, the comments are always open for your thoughts.

Thank you, once more, for your support. Farewell, dear readers. May the threads of fate weave your path desirably.

Notes:

Alas, the first chapter concludes. I shall attempt to finish this work with the next chapter.

I believe it has, indeed, been quite some time since I have interacted with this website. The current lifestyle I lead, unfortunately, has not been generous with time. During the past few months, I needed to come to the aid of the brat. I fully understand why, though; two successive fieldworks through the northern parts of the country, three written reports, one oral report, and five successive exams surely do not sound... so amiable. Nevertheless, I assume this is a normal college student's workload.

Thankfully, our efforts were not in naught. I could see the brat ending this semester on a good note. Or so I hope.

Other than that, the festivities were... rather busier than usual. The brat dragged me along to attend a series of dawn masses, along with some Christmas Parties... while I am not fond of social interactions, I must say that their institute is quite... unique. After all, it is not every day that you see someone bringing alcohol within the university grounds. Well... most humans are anything but law-abiding, anyway.

Naturally, the brat, by the end of the semester, entered a shopping spree. I could only imagine how much my "card" was charged for that... Nevertheless, I think it suffices to say that they deserved it. I'll consider it a reward for their efforts. Moreover, the things they bought weren't really for themselves; it was... for their family. I could only smile to see that even despite the transience of time... their devotion to their family remains unfazed.

After returning to the province, we... traveled once more to attend a family gathering. Of course, a grand meal by the Christmas Eve was in order; hence, we needed to devote much of our time preparing for the feast. I'll say that... of all the people, I was the least useful. After all, the brat did say that whenever I enter the kitchen, there is a 90% probability that it will end in a... "massacre." For reasons I am naught to say, I shall not delve into the details. Kindly spare me the shame, dear readers. Nevertheless, I only served as their mechanical strength in transporting goods, running errands, and cleaning the dishes. Little as it may be, I do have my contributions. This... was only repeated by the eve of the New Year, where an even greater feast is held. We spent the entire afternoon cleaning the home, and... preparing the dishes.

I find it preposterous that the brat struggled to eat 12 grapes in one minute under the table. I have consulted much of my tomes for this... "practice," but I am unfortunate enough to find results. "For true love," they say... well, if that makes them happy, then so be it.

Alright, that is enough stories. I suppose I have shamed both myself the brat sufficiently to, hopefully, instill a smile at your faces. Believe me, the life we lead... could be ridiculous at some point- a solace that we could find amidst the tediousness of life.

Once more, I thank you for rendering this work your valuable time. May the new year fill your lives with grace and fortune.

Until we meet again. Farewell, dear readers.
