Work Text:
"Coming!" Lizbeth yelled as she sprinted back to the check - out counter where her friend evan stood, "ah, just in time" Evan remarked in a cocky voice as he put down his books on the counter. "Well, I was busy doing something, thank you very much." She replied while putting the books in a bag, "and your total comes to 45.25." Evan groaned and threw his head back, "no discount like last time?" He complained and Liz shook her head, "sorry, boss told me not to or I would be fired. I'm lucky he didn't fire me on the spot last time." "do you really have to listen to that Jared boss guy? I mean, isn't he like a big jerk anyways?" Liz sighed, "I wish I didn't have to, but you know I need this job because it's the only thing paying my bills right now, but if I can put up with him for the next few months then i'll be able to find a new job and hopefully a better boss." "Can't wait for that." The boy stated with fake excitement while rolling his eyes in irritation.
Lizbeth reached for something in the lower drawer but realized it wasn't there, "god dang it, I forgot it again. Hey evan, i'll be back i'm just gonna get something from the backroom." Evan just nodded in reply. As Lizbeth left to the backroom her mind wandered to what evan said, she knew he was correct and that her boss is just an arrogant bastard but she needed this job considering since her mother got into a car accident and needed to pay the medical payments but she also had bills to pay off, and groceries to buy. All of this
just stressed her out, and to top it off her father wouldn't help her with anything. What Liz really wanted was to go back to her childhood home when she had a happy family and her father didn't become an infidelity monster, back to when her brother was still alive and she was actually happy with life.
She came to a halt when she finally found what she was looking for, and it was a "thank you for buying our books!" sticker roll. Her boss demanded they put stickers on every purchase that is made, though she thought it was useless but she couldn't say that or she wouldn't get paid for overtime. Her boss, Jared would get pissed off if something didn't go his way and that made liz's life way harder than it should be.
"Took you awhile, huh?" Evan commented as she made her way back, "It just took a bit, okay? This thing was buried deep in a box of endless items, I had almost no chance of finding it." She said as she held up the roll of stickers that read, "thank you for buying our books!". Evan looked confused, "all that time, for a sticker?" Liz nodded. "Jared requires us to put one on every purchase, it's a waste of time."
"I mean he's not here so? why did you have to get them?" "good point but-" Liz paused as she pointed up to a camera, "camera's, that man is addicted to them." she finished her statement.
"stalker much?" Evan joked, "kinda but it is a store and robbing does exist so i'd rather have cameras instead of going missing." she mumbled and Evan agreed to what she said. "reasonable, anyways I gotta catch the bus so i'll see ya." Liz and Evan said their goodbyes and evan was on his way.
For a few hours, lizbeth was bored out of her mind. No one really came in because it was small book industry and she assumed nobody liked books in this area so most of the days she sat in the breakroom on her phone and that would cure her boredom but today was different. Her phone didn't bring her much joy since everything just reminded her of what she could be doing vs what she was doing right now. Liz would give anything to be out of the bookshop, out of the place that smelt like books, out of the place where she was surrounded by books, out of anywhere that had books. she was sick of this place and books if you couldn't tell.
Liz kept scrolling on her phone for what felt like forever, that was until she heard the main entrance door open, and she ran to the counter just to be greeted by her irritated manager's face.
