Work Text:
The warm glow of the scarlet lights strung across the wall illuminates the room. The TV, playing some cheesy romcom, casts light on the two half-asleep boys.
"Hmm. Uh, dave.. what- what time is it?" Karkat mumbles sleepily, craning his neck up to peer at Dave.
"I don't know. Probably like. 3 am or something. Just check," Dave sleepily replies.
"Why don't you check?"
"Because I've got a sleepy ass troll sized weighted blanket on me."
Karkat just rolls his eyes and turns to check the clock.
"Yep. 3:04 am," he says, returning his face to the space between Dave's neck and shoulder. Dave does a small fist pump before flopping back onto the bed like a ragdoll.
"Aughh we should sleeepp"
Karkat just shoves his face further into Dave's neck and grabs onto his waist, clinging to him like a koala on a branch. He mumbles something that Dave quite can't make out.
"What was that?"
"I said, maybe we could sleep if you weren't wearing those dumbass shades," Karkat comments snarkily, getting up to face Dave. Dave just shoves Karkat fondly, which leads to Karkat reaching out in an attempt to snatch his sunglasses off of his face. He holds Karkat back as he tries and fails to grab the eyewear.
Dave can't hold him back forever though.
Karkat moves to tickle Dave in the side, one of his weak spots, and yanks the glasses off of his face. He freezes immediately at what he sees.
In front of him is his best bro, but.. different.
Time seems to slow as he takes a real good look at his best friend for the first time.
He never noticed how Dave's eyes were such a beautiful shade of crimson, and how he felt hypnotized by his gaze. He never noticed the freckles dotting his face, like stars across a galaxy. He never stopped to look at the way Dave's face flushed a light pink whenever he teased him. He never realized how beautiful his best friend was.
Now that he has, he never wants to look away.
Entranced, Karkat moves closer and closer, now realizing how badly he needs Dave's lips to be on his. He's absolutely mesmerized. He's totally flushed.
"Um. Dude?" Dave mutters cautiously, when Karkat's lips are about an inch away from his.
"Um. I. Uh. I." Karkat sputters, the trance broken by Dave's voice.
"I HAVE TO GO. BYE DUMBASS."
Karkat scrambles to get out of the bed and bolts out the door, not even bothering to close it or grab his belongings. Through the crack Dave can see Karkat tripping and stumbling on his way back to his own room. He chuckles and gets up to close the door.
