Work Text:

“Chief?”

Vivia’s voice gently echoed out of the fireplace, Yakou leaning forward in his chair to look at the sleepy detective.

“What is it, Vivia? Need somethin’?”

“Would you mind handing me a few of the novels behind you? I’ve finished all of the ones I have in here…”

Yakou hummed a bit, looking behind him and scanning the books that lined the small shelf.

“Oh, sure thing!”

He got up, analyzing some of the books closer, most of which he forgot he even had. The covers were barely worn, some even looking brand new, the colors still clear and the spines unbroken. He gathered a few in a pile, carefully walking it over to Vivia.

“Okay, sleepyhead, here’s what I’ve got,” He bent down, Vivia looking up at him, his eyes soft. “I’ve got The Giver, Coraline, The Haunting of Hill House,” He listed them, setting them down as he passed each one. “Oh, apparently I have 50 Shades of Grey? I don’t think that’s your style, but I brought it over just in case—”

Vivia felt a smile creep onto his lips, watching as Yakou fumbled and turned red upon opening the book and reading a page.

“I don’t remember it being so graphic… Uh, anywho!”

The last book in Yakou’s hand intrigued Vivia. He had read Coraline and 50 Shades before, and had heard of the other 2, but this one was new to him.

Its cover held a girl, presumably an adolescent, dressed in a pink puffer and holding a lamp. There was a broom strapped to her back, and she had a shocked expression on her face. The background of it looked somewhat similar to a Tim Burton film.

“The Spindlers…” Yakou hummed, turning it over and reading the synopsis.

“Hey, this seems right up your alley!” He handed it to Vivia directly, the boy gently taking it, analyzing it closely.

“It appears… fun…” Vivia opened it up, reading a bit of the first page. “Thank you… Chief Yakou.”

Yakou’s face lit up, watching as Vivia got lost once again in a piece of literature. He stood, walking back over to his desk, sitting silently and returning to his work, glancing over at Vivia every few minutes.

He couldn’t place why, but he enjoyed looking at Vivia. Even when he wasn’t sleeping, he looked peaceful, like he was constantly in the presence of an angel. He appeared cozy in the fireplace, despite it being unconventional at best, and a generator for aching joints at worst.

Not even an hour later, Vivia shut the book and set it aside, softly chucking to himself.

“Ya finished already?”

“Yes, I am…” Vivia giggled, a sound that was rarely ever heard. “As much as I enjoy mature books, children’s novels like this are… always fun.” He smiled in Yakou’s direction, the chief’s heart beginning to ache at the sight. “It was a cozy read…”

“I’m glad you enjoyed it!” Yakou smiled back at him, his face a bit pink.

Silence filled the room once more, Yakou returning to his work as Vivia opened another book. However, Yakou was… distracted.

He kept looking over at Vivia, the smile on his face growing wider with each passing glance. He was almost hypnotized by his tangled hair, his ennui-filled face, his thin figure; he found it… attractive.

As soon as he thought that, Vivia looked up, locking eyes with him.

“You’ve been staring at me… Is there something wrong?”

“Uh…” Yakou’s face turned red, and he looked away bashfully. “It’s nothing…”

Vivia’s expression turned into one of realization, gently shutting his book as he crawled out of the fireplace, catching Yakou’s attention once more, walking over to his desk.

“Vivia? Wh-what are—”

Vivia gently touched Yakou’s face with his hand, turning his head to look at him, smiling gently at him. Yakou’s eyes were now wide, his body trembling a bit. Their noses nearly touched, and both of their hearts were beating exponentially faster. Yakou couldn’t believe the boldness that was being exhibited by the usually reserved bookworm, but at the same time he didn’t want it to stop. In fact, he wanted it to go on forever.

“Well… that expression on your face certainly confirms my theory as to why you keep staring at me.”

Yakou sputtered, moving his eyes to look in every direction except towards Vivia. It was adorable, Vivia thought, and his own face turned a pale red.

“Many would say that one man couldn’t tame such a vigorous beast…” Vivia spoke poetically, reaching up his other hand to take the cigarette out of Yakou’s mouth, setting it in the ashtray before cupping his face. Yakou finally froze, staring into Vivia’s eyes, realizing just how much they looked like hers.

“And yet, you tamed the feral monster in my heart with just your gaze.”

Yakou couldn’t hold it in anymore.

He reached up and grabbed Vivia’s head, pulling him down so fast it nearly gave him whiplash, and roughly locked their lips. Tears pooled in the corner of Yakou’s tightly shut eyes, Vivia’s wide in contrast.

He pulled away slowly, fluttering his eyes open as he stared at the shocked man in front of him, who smiled softly upon processing what just occurred.

“I’m so sorry Vivia, I—”

“Your lips…” Vivia removed Yakou’s glasses and gently wiped his tears away, staring into his deep blue eyes. “…Are softer than a rabbit’s fur.”

“Is…” Yakou stuttered, face still flushed. “Is that a good thing?”

Vivia giggled a bit and moved to sit on Yakou’s lap.

“It’s an extraordinary thing.”

Vivia leaned down and kissed him again, Yakou wrapping his arms around his waist, holding him close. Vivia straddled him, moving one hand to rest on the desk so that he could catch if the chair tipped over under their shared weight.

When they finally broke the kiss, Vivia couldn’t help but begin fiddling with the stubble on Yakou’s chin.

“Hey, that tickles,” Yakou giggled, leaning into the touch like a puppy leaning into its owner‘s scratches.

Vivia leaned down and kissed his forehead, relaxing in Yakou’s arms.

This was pure bliss for both of them, and they wanted to stay frozen in the moment forever.

“Chief! I’m back—”

Yuma opened the sub door, only to be met with the sight of his boss and his colleague tangled together on the tiny office chair, mid makeout session.

They quickly pulled away from each other, staring blankly at Yuma.

“OH! You’re back ea-early!” Yakou stuttered. Vivia looked around, trying to process the safest way to get off the chief’s lap.

“I…” Yuma’s face was red. “I owe Desuhiko some money now, so I’m just… gonna go give him that real quick…”

And with that, the door shut again, and the two lovebirds were alone.

“…Did… did he make a bet with Desuhiko about us?…” Yakou pondered.

“Appears so,” Vivia looked back at him. “Now… where were we?”
