“Why can’t we be happy?”

Summary:

“Well fuck off then Iwazumi, I hope I never see you again” Oikawa said, in a harsh tone that even Iwazumi looked taken back

“W-wait Oikawa-“ Iwazumi sounded more apologetic this time, snapping back to reality to see his best friend was leaving

But he was too late, Oikawa left without another word. They’d never talk again after that

//A world where two best friends get into an argument after their last game together. They’d reunite later on, but for how long?//

Notes:

First time actually writing an actual story in a second!! (its been two years) It feels so much easier now that I dont have a deadline for when I need to finish, anyways I love you all <3

Chapter 1: “What about me?”

Chapter Text

“We trust you captain” The words repeated in Oikawa’s head as he looked back at the ball he had just shanked. He heard a whistle blow, indicating the match against Karasuno has just reached its end.

“Oikawa, it’s time to-“ Iwazumi said, before Oikawa cut him off

“Im fucking sorry, Iwa” Oikawa said, feeling the water beginning to ripple down his warm cheeks

Iwazumi helped Oikawa off the floor, Oikawa hadn’t realized it, but he had fallen onto the ground, his legs giving out beneath him. Oikawa started to make his way towards the end line, feeling everyone looking his way, but this time he couldn’t look up from the floor.

“Do you still..want to go out for a meal afterwards?..For the last time?” Makki whispered to him

“For the last time” Those words felt like a stab in the heart as Oikawa thought about their last game, their last point, their last time on the court all together. This couldn’t help but make the tears flow even more from his eyes. Oikawa decided he was going to decline his offer, as he didn’t deserve to be seated at the same table as everyone, as he was the reason they had lost. The setter was about to open his mouth, as he felt a hand on his shoulder

“He’s going.” Iwazumi responded for Oikawa “We’ll meet you there though” Iwazumi said assuredly

Oikawa heard a sound of approval coming from the middle blocker’s mouth. He then heard a whistle blow, insinuating that it was time to thank fucking Karasuno for the game. Oikawa didn’t want to, they were supposed to win, they were supposed to go to nationals, but where the hell did Karasuno come into play?

As both teams flooded out, all of them reached outside. It was dark by then, had the game been going on for that long? Oikawa didn’t mind it, a gust of wind blew onto the setter. It was refreshing, finally getting a gasp of fresh air, and the only noise being cars passing by and people walking by. He wanted to enjoy it for a second longer, but he felt a sudden tap on his shoulder, causing him to turn around.

“Thank you for being our Oikawa-San” The team said in union, giving Oikawa a small bow

Oikawa froze for a second, taking in the sight in front of him..Even after throwing away their match against Karasuno, they still thanked him. Oikawa was at a lost of words before he felt the wave of tears hit him again

“A-and I-I couldn’t o-of asked f-for a better t-team” Oikawa tried his best not to slur his words as the tears ran down his face

Turns out, a good majority of the team started to cry as they saw his tears. Tears were soon replaced with laughter, as they finally realized it was over. They couldn’t do anything about it, all they could do was look forward, what was next for all of them? Would they all still talk?

Oikawa’s thoughts were interrupted by a hand on his shoulder, he turned around to be greeted by Iwazumi’s dumb face

“Hey shittykawa, can we talk really quick? After we can head to the meal with the rest of the team” Iwazumi said, pointing at everyone else already making their way there.

“Sure Iwa-chan!” Oikawa said, finally being able to muster a smile, it was probably as ugly as it felt, but it was genuine

Iwazumi rolled his eyes, starting to walk off towards one of the alleys. Oikawa had no idea where they were going, but he followed him.

They had been walking for a good 12 minutes now. Oikawa could only see shops and dimly lit streetlights. The mood had died down again, and they walked in silence- I mean, they weren’t complaining, it was a comfortable quiet.

Iwazumi then broke the quiet with a loud exhale

“Ok- Your not telling me something, and I hate when you do that” Iwazumi said, a hint of frustration in his voice, while still being soft

“Hm? I’m not hiding anything Iwa-chan!!” Oikawa said, he was a bad liar, but maybe he could get by?

Iwazumi then stopped in his tracks, he looked into Oikawa’s brown eyes, Iwazumi looked like he was in a state of vulnerability.

“W-Were best friends,” That last part sounded like Iwazumi disliked the title of them being “best friends”

“But, your keeping something from me, and I’m dying to know” Iwazumi finished his sentence, trying to keep eye contact with Oikawa

Sadly, Oikawa hadn’t been working on his acting skills, so he had to come clean. He had thought about how to word it, how to start it without hurting Iwazumi, but there was no way around it. His heart started to pick up as he opened his mouth

“I’m leaving to Brazil after we graduate, I’m going to be playing for Argentina” Oikawa said, breaking eye contact with Iwazumi.

Oikawa looked back at Iwazumi, Iwazumi looked shocked, as expected he started to yell

“What the fuck do you mean your leaving right after we graduate??” He yelled at Oikawa

“I thought you knew this?? You know my dream was to play on Argentina’s olympic team!! We had so many conversations!” Oikawa screamed back, sounding like he was the victim

“I didn’t know you were being serious-“ Iwazumi said, in a quieter but angered tone

“Are you fucking dumb??” Oikawa’s voice rose again “I’ve repeated myself so many damn times, how did you not know?”

The two started to go back and forth, blaming one another for everything. In the end though, there was no victim. Just two best friends having an argument that changed everything
