Forbidden confession

Summary:

Reo gets confessed to, but Nagi doesn't allow it (Hakuho High)

Work Text:

A/N: Sorry but I don't have the attention span to write anything longer, so please enjoy this short fic set in Hakuho High <3

The classroom was full of life, as it always was when Reo Mikage was around. He stood proudly at the center of it all, commanding everyone’s attention with his charm and confidence. The conversation revolved around his latest grand idea—transforming Hakuho High’s soccer team into National champions.

“It’s all part of ‘Reo Mikage’s World Cup Victory Plan,’” he said with a charismatic grin, prompting a wave of enthusiastic nods from the crowd. His energy was contagious, and people were naturally drawn to him. Boys admired his ambition, girls hung on his every word.

But beneath that confident smile, Reo felt empty. The compliments, the laughs, the endless praise—it was all so predictable, so routine, so boring.

As if on cue, the group parted slightly to make way for someone approaching. A girl, Tanaka, stepped forward, her hands clutching a small envelope with a heart sticker on it. Her face was red, her steps hesitant. Reo’s smile didn’t falter, though his internal groan nearly did.

Ah, great, he thought, barely suppressing a sigh.

Confession number… what, eight? Nine? Ten this week?

The girl’s voice trembled as she began. “Mikage-kun, I… I have something I want to tell you…”

Clang!

The sharp sound of a chair crashing to the ground shattered the tension. Heads whipped around to see Seishiro Nagi sprawled onto the floor, looking utterly unbothered despite the chaos he just caused. His chair was toppled beside him, and he blinked up at the ceiling as if wondering how he’d ended up there.

The classroom burst into laughter and whispers. Reo’s group dissolved, turning their attention to the weirdo that is Seshiro Nagi.

“Nagi!” Reo exclaimed, rushing over. “Are you okay?”

Nagi yawned and rubbed the back of his head. “Eh? Why’d you wake me up Reo?”

“Wake you up?!” Reo bonked him lightly on the head. “Idiot, you woke yourself up! How did you even manage this?”

Nagi blinked at him, his expression as blank as ever. “Dunno. Gravity, maybe?”

Reo rolled his eyes but couldn’t help smiling. “You need to be more careful.”

Meanwhile, the girl stood frozen, her confidence completely derailed by the commotion. With shaky hands, she hands over the envelope to Reo, and runs out as quickly as she could.

Nagi watched from his seat as Reo turned the envelope over in his hands, looking unsure what to do with it. When Reo glanced back at him, Nagi quickly averted his gaze.

Reo tilted his head and thought about what his friend might be up to.

After Class

The bell rang, and the classroom emptied in a rush. Everyone hurried off to lunch—everyone except Reo and Nagi. Nagi, as usual, had slept throughout class and remained slumped over his desk.

Reo leaned back in his chair, eyeing his sleeping friend. With a smirk, he crumpled a piece of paper and chucked it at Nagi’s head. Almost immediately, Nagi jolted upright.

“Huh? What?” Nagi mumbled, looking around groggily before narrowing his eyes at Reo. “Why’d you do that? You’re a hassle, Reo.”

Reo smirked, leaning forward on his desk. “Did you fall on purpose to stop that girl from confessing to me?”

Nagi blinked, caught off guard. He tilted his head in his usual indifferent way. “No. Why would I do that?”

“Because the timing was way too perfect,” Reo said, poking Nagi’s arm playfully. “Admit it, you planned that whole act.”

Nagi yawned, scratching his head. “Falling over on purpose is too much of a pain. I’d never do that.”

Reo raised an eyebrow. “Uh-huh. So you were just… sleeping?”

Nagi nodded.

“And you have nothing to say about Tanaka?”

Nagi blinked. “Well, she stutters a lot when she talks…”

“Aha!” Reo pointed triumphantly. “So you were listening!”

“That doesn’t mean anything…” Nagi said flatly, though the faintest hint of pink dusted his cheeks.

“No it means you fell over on purpose!” Reo declared, leaning closer with a teasing grin.

Nagi stared at him for a long moment before sighing. “So what if I did?”

Reo was stunned. For a moment, he wasn’t sure he’d heard correctly. Nagi wasn’t supposed to admit things like this ever. It threw Reo off, leaving him staring at his friend with a mix of disbelief and curiosity.

"Why would you do that?"

"You told me you were bored of people confessing to you."

“So you… wanted to save me from a boring confession?” Reo asked, a smile slowly creeping on his face. He wasn't used to Nagi doing things for him. Heck, he didn't even think Nagi cared about him like that. “I thought that you thought I was a hassle.”

Nagi shrugged. “You are a hassle. But boring confessions are worse.”

Reo laughed, cheekily narrowing his eyes on his friend. “So what are you saying, Nagi? You’d rather confess to me yourself?”

Nagi rolled his eyes. “That sounds like even more of a pain.”

“Sure, sure.” Reo leaned forward again, his grin mischievous. “But maybe you wanted to confess that you actually want to play soccer with me forever. Is that right, Nagi?”

Nagi groaned, putting his hands over his ears. “You’re so noisy, Reo.”

Reo chuckled. “You’re not denying it.”

“I’m not confirming it either,” Nagi muttered.

Reo stood up, slinging his bag over his shoulder. “Come on, lazy. We’ve got training.”

Nagi pouted and hunched over his desk. “Carry me please.”

“What?” Reo stared at him. “Are you serious?”

Nagi looked up, his expression completely serious. “You woke me up. You owe me.”

Reo sighed and then crouched down in front of him. “Fine. Get on.”

Nagi clambered onto Reo’s back like a lazy sloth clinging onto a tree branch. In one swift motion, Reo gets up and walks for the both of them. The destination? Hakuho High’s soccer field.

As Nagi’s chin rest on Reo’s shoulder, all Nagi could think of was how easy and comfortable he feels around Reo. He’s not a hassle, he thought.

"Hey Reo…” he mutters, almost like a whisper into Reo’s ears, “Don’t drop me, okay?”

Reo scoffed, turning his head towards Nagi

“As if I’d let my treasure go?”
