„I wanna see her.“ Tendou whined, and it was the fourth time in half an hour that he mentioned his girlfriend, causing Ushijima to sigh almost desperately.
„Tendou.“ He growled threateningly, glaring at his friend. „Then go visit her, but for the love of god, give me a break.“ And with that, Ushijima turned back around, trying to focus on his homework.
However, his friend had other intentions, not wanting to let the topic go just yet, laying on his bed while letting out a dramatic groan. „I want to!“ He defended himself, „But I can’t just go to her school like that! What if I’m too overbearing? What if I annoy her?“
Ushijima slammed the pencil down on the desk with more force than necessary, gathering his books in his arms and turning to leave the room. However, he made the mistake to glance one last time at his friend, seeing how he was pouting and looking actually distressed. „You two are writing day and night, you call each other no matter what time and spend every spare moment together.“ He muttered, lifting an eyebrow. „You both are overbearing, if you ask me.“ Ushijima sent him a pointed look that asked what he didn’t utter out loud. What was wrong with Tendou?
„I just-“ The redhead started fiddling with the phone in his hands, groaning silently as he slammed his head down on his pillow. He mumbled something incomprehensible, causing Ushijima to tighten his grip on his books in order to not punch his friend in annoyance.
„If you want to talk, then speak up. I’m not planning to stand here any longer than necessary and listen to your whining.“
„What if she’s embarrassed?“ Tendou was unusually silent, his voice wobbling ever so slightly.
„What are you-“ Ushijima stopped himself before he could say something that sounded too harsh. So instead, he let him continue speaking his mind.
„She’s training right now.“ He mumbled, finally lifting his head from the pillow. „If I wait for her to finish and wait for her answer if I can come around, it’ll be too late and won’t be worth it since we have school tomorrow. But if I just go there and wait…“ He trailed off, glancing down at his hands as he once again twirled his phone around. „What if she didn’t tell anyone about us yet? What if she’s embarrassed about me and doesn’t want her teammates to see me?“
Ushijima simply let out a small scoff, narrowing his eyes a little. „Then she’s not the right person for you.“ He just answered before finally leaving their dorm room. There was nothing he could say to make his friend feel better, he wasn’t the heartfelt type after all. All he could offer him was to speak his mind, but he knew that it was enough for Tendou.
That’s why the redhead finally found himself trudging down the school grounds of Karasuno High, ignoring the nosy glances from other students upon seeing him with his Shiratorizawa jacket. After a few minutes he finally found the right gym, seeing through one of the windows how the team was already taking down the net, finishing the training.
With a nervous sigh, he leaned against a pillar close to the entrance door, waiting for the team to come out. Despite his calm demeanor, he was so nervous. This was his first girlfriend, and everything between them was just going great. He never thought that he’d ever be lucky enough to find someone that likes him, and at times he still doubted the realness of her feelings. Especially in the darkness of the night, his brain easily turned into a dark place when he remembered all the harassing he’s been through and wondered why on earth a girl like her would want to date him. Was it just another trick, acting all nice and then breaking his heart? But no, he couldn’t think like that. If he did, how was he ever supposed to find happiness, love and friendship then?
Just because he forced himself to think positively, however, didn’t mean, that he wasn’t nervous about her reaction for coming here unannounced. The door to the gym opened, making him clench his hands at his side, putting on a small, confident grin.
The grin faltered quickly, however, as he saw the orange-haired first year coming out, energetic as always, even though he had just finished training. Tendou had never seen such a ball of energy as this boy, and it really annoyed him. Especially at their match. All he wanted was to break his spirit, but no matter the efforts, the team stayed strong and didn’t lose hope. It was irritating.
„Oh, hello.“ The boy immediately came rushing over to him, offering him a big smile, while the other three first years also left the gym now. „You’re surely here to see Y/N, right?“ He continued in his ever cheery tone. „Does you two dating means, that you’ll teach us those monster blocks? You were so quick. I blinked once and suddenly wham, you were there and I tried to whoosh but you-“
„Hinata.“ Kageyama interrupted the other’s babbling, narrowing his eyes at the smaller.
„What?“ Hinata immediately looked at the Setter in annoyance. „You saw his blocks! I just wanted to-“
„Yes, and you’ll never be able to jump high enough to get close to block like that, you moron.“
„Oh, I didn’t see you doing much better, Crappyama!“
„You little-“
Tendou watched with raised eyebrows as the two first years started bickering loudly, barely able to suppress his smirk. They were annoying, sure, but somehow they grew to him. Was that the reason Y/N had been with them for so long? He just saw them as an annoying nuisance, but right now he was actually quite amused by the unlike duo.
„And you were confused why Y/N said she’s too embarrassed to introduce you to her boyfriend officially.“ The blonde middle blocker huffed, not even stopping in his tracks as he just continued his way towards the school building. An intimidated-looking boy was quick to follow him while still sending Tendou a shy smile, waving at him shortly before disappearing inside the other building.
„Wah!“ Hinata let out an infuriated scream, immediately letting go of the Setter as he sprinted after the middle blocker, Kageyama doing the same with an annoyed growl.
„You’ve gotta excuse the two.“ A new friendly voice spoke up, as now the three third years came over. „They’re a lot, but they mean well.“ The substitute setter smiled as they stopped in front of Tendou now. „I’m Sugawara and these are Sawamura and Azumane.“
„I’m Tendou.“ The middle blocker answered, almost confused at his friendly demeanour. After all, Tendou had laughed in his face after blocking him in their match. Shouldn’t he be annoyed and hate him? Maybe even be scared of him, like so many else? So why was he smiling all friendly.
„It’s nice to officially meet you outside the court.“ The captain told him politely.
„Oh, uh, thanks. You too.“ Tendou nearly stumbled over his sentence, widening his eyes slightly.
„Y/N should be out in a minute. She’s just discussing something with our Coach.“ Sugawara continued to smile friendly, not being even slightly bothered by Tendou’s weird and reserved behaviour. „We’ve gotta change now, but I hope we’ll get to know you better another time.“ He patted his shoulder before the three third years also began walking off towards the clubroom. But all of them quickly stopped in their tracks as they heard the loud screams coming from the entrance of the hall.
„Shiratorizawa’s middle blocker!“
„Satori Tendou!“
Baldie and the libero yelled at the same time, pointing at the red-haired boy, who tensed slightly. And without further warnings, they rushed over as quickly as they could, stopping in front of him while practically bouncing on the spot.
„You’ve got to tell us your secrets!“
„Be our sensei!“
„Teach us your ways!“
They screeched over each other, staring at him with big eyes. Tendou had no idea what these two were yapping about, causing him to take a step back, narrowing his eyes slightly as he tried to make sense of their words.
„How did you get Y/N to agree to go out with you?“
„We’ve been trying to ask out Shimizu for an eternity!“
„Please, tell us what you did!“
„Tanaka, Nishinoya!“ Sawamura suddenly appeared behind the two boys, looking as if he was about to kill the two as he grabbed them by the back of their shirts. „All Y/N asked us was to not embarrass her or harass her boyfriend. Couldn’t you two for once pull yourselves together?“ He growled, causing the second years to shrink, pulling their heads between their shoulders.
„We were just wondering what he said to get Y/N to agree to going out with him.“ Tanaka whispered sheepishly, trying to get out of his captain’s grasp.
„I didn’t do anything.“ Tendou spoke up for the first time, feeling a grin tugging on his lips. As he came here, he expected them to threaten him. Holding a speech about something like, ‘If you break her heart, we’ll kill you.’ He expected that they didn’t know about them dating because she was ashamed, or that all of it was a joke, and they’d make fun of it. But that they were practically looking up to him? That’s nothing he’d ever expected. „Y/N asked me out.“ He admitted, rubbing the back of his neck with a small smile.
„Whaaaat?!“ Nishinoya and Tanaka screeched, their eyes almost plopping out of their heads.
„We’re sorry about these two.“ Sugawara chuckled as Sawamura now dragged them off while they continued to babble over each other in shock. „We’ll see you around.“ He waved before hitting the backs of the boys’ heads, starting to scold them now.
„Satori!“ Your voice echoed through the air, making the red head smile as he now turned to look back to the entrance of the gym. „You’re here, hey!“ You smiled happily, making your way over towards your boyfriend.
„Yes, heh… I thought I’d surprise you. I’m sorry if that’s not-“
„That’s fine!“ You interrupted him immediately, leaning up and giving him a short kiss. „I’m glad you’re here, I missed you.“
„I missed you too! That’s why I’m here.“ Tendou admitted softly, taking your hand in his. „I’ve gotta admit, though, I didn’t expect such a welcome from your team. Not that I’m not happy, they were actually nice!“
„Of course.“ You laughed, „They are nice people, after all. The one or other might be a slight Tsundere, but none of them is a bad person. Why, did you expect anything different?“
Tendou went through all of his anxious thoughts he had the last hours, not wanting to admit them out loud though. „No, I didn’t really think about how your team would react to see me.“ He lied, but you shot him a knowing grin, knowing him good enough by now to not just believe it.
„If you say so.“ You played along, „They really want to officially meet you, though. After all, they are curious about the guy who I fell for.“
„Ohh, you’re soooo crushing on me.“ Tendou teased, acting as if his heart wasn’t melting, hearing your words. Seems, like all his fears were reasonless.
