Easy Carry

Summary:

Geno's VERY pregnant and missing Sid and Penguins Hockey.

Notes:

Folks in the SidGeno Discord were discussing Sid getting all the "Sidney Crosby played while pregnant" mentions in other HRPF fics, so I felt the need to write Geno getting to play while pregnant.

I didn't really end up writing that, exactly, but I do quite like this fic!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

"Hey Geno." Sid said.

"I miss you, Sid, why you have to leave without me?" Zhenya sniffled. He'd been having an emotional day. His favorite pair of sweatpants didn't fit anymore, even though they were sweatpants, and then he's dropped the remote, and they'd run out of peanut butter, and Zhenya was officially done. But he couldn't put all of that into English, not right now. He wanted his husband back, nevermind that he had only left this morning.

"I miss you to, babe." Sid said, softening immediately. "But you know you can't come on the plane until after the kids are born."

"Siidddd." Zhenya whined.

"I know, baby." Sid hummed. "You're parents will be here next week, right? Are you sure there's nothing I can do to get them here sooner? I can try talking to the front office?"

Zhenya rolled his eyes. He appreciated the sentiment, but also JP and Gennady had already worked everything out. His parents' flights were booked, they'd be here when they'd be here. Anyways, Sid hated using his pull with front office when it came to anything that wasn't directly hockey related. He was only even offering because he was sweet on Zhenya and he hated being unable to comfort him even more.

"Not want parents now, want you." Zhenya grumbed, then added. "And hockey."

"I know, baby." Sid murmured. "But you're too far along now to play."

Zhenya grumbled in articulately.

"Is there anything I can do to make it better?"

Zhenya was tempted to say no outright and continue moping to his husband but...

"You on bus?"

"Yeah, baby, I called you right after we got off the plane, just like I promised." Sid hummed.

Zhenya rolled his eyes again. "Put me on speaker phone. I want hear."

"Ok, baby." Sid fumbled with his phone for a moment, then Zhenya could hear the tell tale sounds of a Penguins roadie. Pens chatting among themselves and playing card games.

"Good." Zhenya declared.

"You spoiling your husband again, Sid?" Tanger hollered, far to close of the reciever for his volume.

"Aaaayyyy, is that, Geno?" Nealer called. And then there was a rush of familiar greetings.

Zhenya basked in the attention. Everyone knew Omegas were meant to live in packs. It wasn't Zhenya's fault his whole pack had to leave him behind for work.

"Yes, yes, I'm best. Need me or no one collect fines, make sure score enough goals." There was much jeering and chirping in response, but Zhenya could hear Sid's honking laugh over it all, and that was the most important part.

"Tell me bets." Zhenya demanded. He was just about guaranteed to get any interesting stories along with a recount of all collected and uncollected bets.

Zhenya curled around his round belly as his teammates started up. He could still hear Sid's breathing, he always held the phone too close to his face when he put it on speaker phone.

Between the twins and it being his first pregnancy, Zhenya hadn't been allowed to play for his whole pregnancy, even though everyone knew omega men carried easy. His belly had popped out early too (for a male omega, anyway), which is what had started all the fuss about plane travel and giving up playing two weeks early.

But at least Zhenya had these phone calls, even if he did have a whole 6 weeks until he was finally due, all of which Sid would be playing hockey without him.

---------

Zhenya gives birth exactly one week later, babies healthy as can be, because it turns out between it being twins and having actually gotten pregnant 3-4 weeks before his heat, – just long enough for his heat to decide to happen anyways, just to be sure – his due date was mis-estimated. (The twins are probably a week or two early.)

Zhenya is unbearably smug about this, especially considering how upset he was to be barred from playing "early".

Notes:

Please also allow me to introduce, a retroverted uterus, aka when the uterus is tilted backwards towards the spine, instead of forwards towards the bellybutton. Women/afab folks with this perfectly normal physiology may not show there pregnancy until late in the pregnancy or at all until the last week or so, (when the body starts prepping to give birth) especially if they have strong abdominal muscles. Geno has solid abs, and I've decided male omegas all get retroverted uteruses coming off of their anal canal (to fit behind their functional internal male sex organs and to facilitate carrying a pregnancy for as long as possible while still playing hockey, aka, the impetus for this fic.) How long/close to his due date Zhenya carries his twins, pushes back the NHL's idea of safe play while gestating, and results in many more omegas deciding to play to term and/or have babies during the NHL.

Other random and semi-relevant repro facts: horses backs/hips typically "drop"/relax about one week before giving birth. Similar timing has been anecdotely reported in women with retroverted uteruses.

Also, placental mammals of nearly all sorts (no idea about marsupials) have been know to give birth during storms. Something about the pressure dropping/changing sets labor off. I personally was born in a snowstorm, and my brother in a hurricane. Post-hurricane/major storm stories of farmers or wildlife conservationists returning to find one more head of cattle or one more feral horse than expected (due to a mom giving birth in the storm) are also fairly frequently reported.

Also the baby/fetus sends the chemical signals that set off labor (normally, this is not always the case with early or stress induced labor), not the pregnant person's body.
