You Gotta Make Do

Summary:

Work Text:

The clattering sound of the pouring rain on the window is what has driven Saga out of the library that afternoon. He stands in front of the main entrance, breathing in the cool air, wondering how he will get home in this godforsaken weather.

His brainstorming comes to a halt when a certain someone makes a surprised noise next to him.

“Saga-senpai?”

“Hm? Why are you still here?”

“Oh, some late afternoon activities,” Ritsu explains with a chuckle. “You don’t have an umbrella, do you?”

Saga smiles, trying his hardest not to be sarcastic with the person he has apparently come to love.

“Nah. I didn’t expect this,” he gestures at the downpour.

Ritsu sighs, bowing a little.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t bring one, either.”

“Why are you apologising? It’s not like you could predict the weather,” Saga sighs heavily, leaning against the glass of the entrance.

“I guess,” Ritsu chuckles again, and Saga’s heart skips a beat. He loves his little giggle.

Silence sets between them, and Saga is back to brainstorming ideas. He really doesn’t fancy getting soaked in this rain, but then again, he should be paying better attention to the weather forecast. Forecasts can’t always be trusted, though.

He sighs again, and he can feel Ritsu’s gaze on him. And then… he has an idea. A ridiculous one at that, but it might work. It might also make Ritsu want to disappear from the face of this Earth. And it might brighten their days a little. Regardless, he supposes it’s worth a try.

He unbuttons his jacket and takes it off.

“Oh, that’s right, we could hold our jackets over our heads!” Ritsu catches on, although onto the wrong idea.

“Are you silly? You’ll catch a cold!”

“Huh?” Ritsu tilts his head in confusion.

“Hop on my back.”

All Ritsu does in response is blinking rapidly, as if Saga wasn’t even speaking Japanese. Saga is waiting for a verbal response, though, holding his jacket in his hand.

“I’m sorry, what?” Ritsu says, a smile frozen on his adorable face. Saga wants to kiss him so bad. But for now, there are more pressing issues at hand.

“If you hop on my back, I can hold my jacket over the both of us, and your body heat will keep me warm.”

Ritsu, once again, blinks.

“But… I use a completely different metro line to get home, senpai.”

“I can piggyback ride you to the station and then run to my station afterwards,” Saga explains his grand idea. Ritsu doesn’t look like he’s very keen on it.

“But your jacket will be soaking–”

Saga sighs.

“One of us soaks or we both soak. I choose the first. And if you come back home with me, we can feed Sorata together and I can give you an umbrella.”

Ritsu’s face goes redder and redder by the second. If Saga had to take a wild guess, he’s probably imagining himself on his senpai’s back.

“B-but… that would be embarrassing,” Ritsu argues, his hands seemingly shaking.

“Do I need to remind you of the even more embarrassing shit we do in my bedroom?”

There. Ritsu looks like he’s being cooked on high heat. Even his neck is red now. This guy will never grow out of his tendency to feel embarrassed by the smallest things.

But a second later, he nods, giving into the idea. Saga bends down a little, and Ritsu walks behind him, holding on to his shoulders before he jumps a little, legs wrapped around his waist.

“I’ll never forget this, oh god,” Ritsu mumbles.

Saga doesn’t respond. He's busy trying to hold the jacket high enough to cover both of them. It’s a chore, but it works.

“Now I’m not athletic enough to run to the station, but I’ll be able to walk. You’re pretty light.”

Ritsu mumbles something into his shoulders, and Saga only smiles as he starts walking towards the gate. For the most part, they’re quiet. The rain drums against the concrete and the cherry trees around them.

“So are you coming over then?”

“Huh?” Ritsu lifts his head. His face has been buried into Saga’s shoulder this entire time. “Oh, uh. I’ll have to call my mother on the metro then. Although she’s already asking whose place I’m staying at a lot.”

“Tell her you got a girlfriend,” Saga says with a smile. He knows what reaction Ritsu will give and in a second he gives exactly that. A screech, his face probably tomato red.

“N-No, I can’t.”

“Why not?”

“Circumstances you wouldn’t understand.”

Saga laughs at that as they finally reach the metro station. He puts Ritsu down the minute they’re covered.

“Okay, okay. Is it, like, a rich kids’ thing?”

Ritsu doesn’t even say anything. He huffs his face a little, and once again, Saga finds himself wanting to kiss him. While they wait for the metro, Ritsu makes a quick phone call that stretches out in the end, his mother probably bombarding him with questions.

As annoying as that sounds, Saga sometimes wishes someone would care about him this much. But as he glances at Ritsu, he realises that someone already does.
