Chise
Strengths:
Brilliant Botanist: Chise's expertise in botany gives her a wealth of knowledge about plants, fungi, and their ecosystems. She can identify rare species at a glance and understands their medicinal and ecological significance.
Compassionate Protector: Her empathy isn't limited to humans—it extends to the natural world and the fae. She feels an intrinsic duty to protect vulnerable beings, even if it places her in danger.
Resourceful and Overprepared: Always carrying a well-stocked bag of tools, reference books, and survival gear, Chise is ready for almost any scenario.
Flaws:
Obsessive: Chise struggles to let go of a mystery or unanswered question once her curiosity is piqued, even if it pushes her into reckless or unhealthy situations.
Self-Sacrificing: Her willingness to risk herself for others, whether for the orbs, plants, or strangers, can verge on dangerous altruism.
Difficulty with Boundaries: Her kindness often leads to her being taken advantage of or overextending herself, as well as making people uncomfortable with oddly personal questions
Motivations:
Knowledge: Chise's drive to understand the world, particularly its flora and ecosystems, stems from a deep-seated need to make sense of the unknown.
Healing: Her compassion is rooted in a desire to preserve life and beauty, believing that understanding plants is the key to creating harmony in the world.
Quirks:
Collector Mentality: Chise keeps meticulous journals filled with pressed flowers, sketches, and detailed notes about every plant she encounters.
Eccentric Loner: She often speaks to plants or inanimate objects alone, finding comfort in their silent company.
Unflappable Calm: Her love for plants brings her immense serenity, allowing her to maintain her composure even in strange or magical circumstances.
Fae Connection: Loved and drawn to by fae, Chise radiates an aura that attracts them, though she doesn't fully understand why. They play games with her, seeing her as someone special but fragile.
Elias
Strengths:
Vast Knowledge of Magic: Elias has a nearly endless understanding of the magical world, from ancient rituals to arcane spells, making him a powerful and resourceful being.
Protector: Despite his curse, Elias takes his role as guardian of the forest seriously, ensuring its survival and balance even at the cost of his happiness.
Curiosity: His fascination with humanity drives him to learn, albeit in a clumsy, childlike manner that makes him endearing and awkward.
Flaws:
Fragmented Memories: Elias's past is a haze of incomplete fragments, leaving him unsure of his origins or purpose beyond his curse, causing inner turmoil and self-doubt.
Jealous and Controlling: He struggles with possessive tendencies, especially when he fears losing his few meaningful connections, which can come across as codependent or stifling.
Socially Inept: Elias often misunderstands human emotions and customs, leading to unintentional offence or awkward interactions.
Despised by Fae: The Fae see him as an unnatural creature, a being they both fear and loathe, which isolates him further in the magical world.
Motivations:
Companionship: Elias's craving for connection comes from his profound loneliness, driving his curiosity about humanity and fascination with Chise.
Redemption: He wishes to understand his curse and role in the forest, hoping to make peace with his existence.
Quirks:
Childlike Behavior: Elias's fascination with the mundane makes him fixate on human habits and objects naively and charmingly.
Unsettling Presence: Despite his quiet demeanour, his skeletal visage and aura of power make him inherently intimidating.
Ritualistic Nature: He has a rigid way of doing things (when awake), relying on routine to ground himself amid the chaos of his fragmented memories.=
Speech: Elias speaks with an odd cadence for a while because he isn't used to modern speech patterns and language (sort of old-timey English)
Relationship with the Forest: As its cursed protector, Elias feels tethered to the forest physically and emotionally. While he fulfills his duty, he resents the isolation it imposes on him.
The Orbs (A kind of fae that I will explain)
Appearance:
Ethereal green orbs of light, varying in size from tiny marbles to large globes. Their glow intensifies or dims depending on their mood or intentions. When closely examined, faint shapes can be glimpsed within the light, like tiny wings or shifting faces, though never clearly enough to confirm what they are; I leave that up to your imagination or for when I need to bring it up. They move in playful, erratic patterns, flitting between branches or hovering out of reach, their motions imbued with mischief.
Personality:
Playful and Mischievous: They delight in confusing and teasing those who enter the forest, enjoying harmless pranks that often feel eerie or unsettling to humans.
Inquisitive: The orbs are drawn to curiosity and kindness, especially in humans like Chise. They are intrigued by her actions and emotions, which they find entertaining and fascinating.
Elusive: While engaging with Chise, they remain enigmatic, never revealing their purpose or motives too much. They prefer to let their actions speak for themselves.
Childlike Joy: The orbs exhibit a carefree, whimsical energy that contrasts with the darker tone of the forest. However, their playfulness can sometimes feel disconcerting, as if they know more than they let on.
Motivations:
Fascination with Chise: The orbs are inexplicably drawn to her, sensing something unique about her that sets her apart from other humans. Their connection to her is part of a larger mystery.
Love for Games: They thrive on interaction, leading Chise through the forest like a game of hide-and-seek, testing her resolve and courage.
Forest Balance: As fae, they are intrinsically linked to the forest's health and magic. While playful, they also act as guardians, ensuring no harm comes to their home.
Strengths:
Ethereal Nature: The orbs are incorporeal, able to pass through solid objects, hide in shadows, and vanish at will. They are nearly impossible to trap or harm.
Guiding Light: Despite their mischief, they can guide travellers to safety—or danger—depending on their whim. They use their glow to light paths or mark significant areas.
Aura of Enchantment: Their presence has a calming, almost hypnotic effect, lulling humans into a sense of wonder and curiosity.
Flaws:
Fickle: Their motivations are ever-shifting, and they can quickly lose interest, abandoning someone in the forest if they become bored.
Playfulness Over Caution: While they usually avoid causing harm, their games can lead to unintended consequences, especially with fragile humans.
Selective Loyalty: They may protect someone they deem "special," but their allegiance is fleeting and conditional, leaving others to fend for themselves.
Role in the Story:
Harbingers of Change: The orbs are the catalysts for Chise's discovery of the flower and her meeting with Elias. Their actions nudge her toward key moments in the narrative.
Unseen Observers: They watch events unfold with detached curiosity, occasionally interfering but always maintaining an air of mystery.
Connection to Chise: Their bond with her hints at deeper reasons tied to her role in the magical world, though the truth remains hidden.
Quirks:
Erratic Movement: Their seemingly random, darting motions make predicting their path or intentions hard.
Light Communication: The orbs express emotion through changes in brightness, pulsing when amused, flaring when excited, or dimming when upset.
Mischievous Helpfulness: They enjoy aiding humans in convoluted, roundabout ways, making even simple tasks feel like part of a game.
Relationship with Chise: They see her as a source of amusement but also feel a protective instinct toward her, though even they may not fully understand why. Their connection to her is part of a more profound mystery tied to her unique essence.
