cool winter breeze slipped through the cracked window, biting at his fingertips that held onto the frame, yet went ignored as he watched the wind shake the leaves of a nearby tree. the branches covered most of his view of the sky from where the room sat, a sad angle when the moon was supposed to have a yellow glow that evening.
lucifer didn’t budge from the spot, even as the cold turned his skin pale, and there was a slight chatter to his teeth. pain in a subtle way, an urge that’s rare for him to crave though made its ugly presence known, strong and dreadful. frozen, he’d stick to his window until a soft patter of footsteps was heard behind him.
flushed ears perked, his lips twitched as a pair of hands found their way onto his shoulders, a squeeze felt and a soft snicker heard. luci could stand there forever with the sudden warmth pressed on his back, the mix of the two varying temperatures pricked at his skin and made his grip loosen slightly.
“so quiet, love. what’s on your mind?” hummed the voice, one so comforting it made the mess of his mind ease for a beat or two. sister daniel rubbed circles on his shoulders with the pads of her thumbs, absentmindedly touching him while she waited for an answer; always patient when it came to lucifer, guilt plagued his heart.
careful with his words, one wrong thought slipping through could burden the air with tension and become uncomfortable between the pair. “i really—“ luci tilted his head as the sentence clung to his tongue— “want to look at the stars and moon, on the beach. jus’ for a little while.”
pause. he held his breath. the caress stopped for a second, a moment too long, before dani ran her hands down his arms and placed them on top of his. “yeah?” she tucked her chin in the crook of his neck, to feel his heart beat, the heat burning on her cheek. “how badly do you want to, my sweet boy?”
“bad. like, right now, i need to see the sky.” he didn’t mean to rush it out, the urgency of the situation non-existent, something that wasn’t dani’s problem or concern. if anything, it was embarrassing that dani knew— dani knows, despite never truly explaining to her why it happens. it’s best that way.
no further questions, dani tugged luci away from the window, helping each other dress appropriately for the below degree weather and making their way on the road. the beach wasn’t close, no, almost half an hour away from the church, adding to luci’s jenga tower that he kept picking apart and prays it’ll magically stay together.
just driving away from what was familiar helped, however. the passing street lamps counted, luci verbally taking note how spread out they were in neighborhoods compared to the main road, and dani simply giving a noise to acknowledge the observations. it must be tough, one minute being cryptic then another minute … being himself.
small talk kept the ride from going silent, no radio no music, just the sound of them going on tangents that didn’t seem quite fitting for the time it was or where they were headed. still— the feeling that they were running away, together, even if he’s well aware they weren’t, made his heart melt.
over a bridge and down a path, mostly surrounded by bushes and small trees, dani pulled into an entrance that led to a parking lot for the beach. not a lot of spaces, all void of life, open for them to park directly in front of wooden planks that would carry them to the annoying sand and singing sea.
a quiet veil hung over them, hand in hand stepping on shells and seaweed as the moon lit up from the sun’s everlasting influence; it reflected off the water’s ripples, waves a bit intense from the moon’s strength. powerful, luci always admired how beautiful it was, especially in that moment.
stars twinkled, a blink here and there from the brightest ones, signaling a greeting to the couple. feeling a squeeze, luci flicked a glance dani’s way, the realization hit she had been staring at him this whole time. in the dark of night and under the dim light of the moon, dani still stands out to him, he can see her silhouette perfectly.
“cold?” is all she asked, a question which came off more of a fact from her tone, luci only nodding as a response. sand is an enemy to all, this one time he’ll allow himself to rid of the bias and lie down; soft, he thought, if he didn’t think further that it was a bunch of small, broken down pieces of rock and shells, formerly sea life.
anywhere they are, they’ll be entangled with one another, somehow finding a way to touch or hold. it’s easy at night, on a public beach with no guards or tourists, their immoral display welcomed by the earth and adored by the sky. if it wasn’t for the evil specs already irritating his eyes, he would’ve forgotten they were there.
the waves soothed his nerves with their bass, the bugs played along to the tune with their song. and as a breeze tickled his ears and a nun kissed his forehead, luci kept his focus on all his senses, overloaded with what was around him rather than before, whatever he was doing before. it was inevitable for tears to fall.
and dani kissed them away. she tended to the stream, gently wiping his wet lashes and pinching at his nose, ignoring the whine of protest when he got drippy. she didn’t care, not now, when he needed her. take away the sorrows and the sadness, like how he does for her, more than she can count on her two hands.
“hey. hey, talk to me,” murmured dani, a light touch to the side of his face, once she heard the broken breaths and felt his tail tightening around her leg. when did it wrap itself there? didn’t matter, quickly tossed aside as he moved against her, the position awkward on their limbs and muscles began to ache.
“too much. in a little?” luci sniffled, grabbing at different parts of her, from her back to her sides to her hands. “want my attention on you. please. ‘m sorry.” a whisper followed by a sob, pathetic and weak and shaking at her side. quickly hushed and apology deemed unnecessary, dani rolled them over to be pressed down on top of him.
“came here for the moon, didn’t we? and yet you only want me.”
“you’re my moon. let me have you?”
“my starlight… you already do.”
nothing mattered when dani loved him, loved on him so openly, no hesitation with each kiss and each grope. talking would help, blurt out the chicken scratch that was scribbled around in his head and be done with it, though being handled with care by her hand felt revolutionary. does more to help him than she knows, probably.
the moon reflects the sun’s light, shining in her favor with undying devotion. slow kiss, tucked away hands beneath fabric to drink in crackling warmth, luci will be okay. he has to be, in order to keep this, to keep her. the lucky demon who now has it all, and he wouldn’t exchange her for anything.
