Chapter Text

Nevermore Academy, the home of all outcasts such as vampires, werewolves, sirens, etc. But there was one outcast who was a mystery to everyone; and that was Enid Sinclair. Enid was something different, ancient, and far more powerful. Nobody knew who or what she was, not even her roommate and best friend. Wednesday was the most powerful psychic at Nevermore and yet not even she knew; somehow her visions of Enid was blocked. Raised by Esther and Murray Sinclair, who were both werewolves. Enid was the personification of sunshine and rainbows.

Enid was getting stronger, that much was obvious after she lifted rubble of Wednesday during Crackstone’s attack. It was a new school year, the students were preparing and saying goodbye to their families. Enid hugged Gomez, Morticia and Pugsley and thanking them for letting her stay with them. Esther and Murray made their feelings about Enid clear; she was not family and therefore was not entitled to their protection. But Wednesday knew, Enid did not need their protection anymore because she far surpassed werewolves in terms of brute strength.

But the questioned remained; what was Enid Sinclair and just how powerful was she. Well, this story all started with… a murder. I mean, it is Wednesday; of course she would become embroiled in another murder investigation. It had been 3 weeks since they returned to Nevermore and after visiting Divina who was still depressed after Yoko’s departure. Enid returned to the dorm she shared with Wednesday and found the raven staring at a murder board. Enid let loose a high-pitched whine, she stalked over to her best friend “Wednesday, I thought we discussed this… just one quiet year without a murder investigation.”

“Smelling salts are on your bedside table” Wednesday replied in that usual tone of her. Enid smiled; she had grown accustomed to Wednesday’s hobbies. Wednesday turned to Enid; she could see that the blonde was somewhat interested in the murder investigation. “Johnny Archer; found in his home burned alive. No visible sign of entrance, doors, and window’s locked from the inside. Enid hummed to herself before smirking “Probably Vulcans were still pissed that he had command of the Enterprise” Enid joked.

The confused look on Wednesday’s face made Enid exhale a heavy sigh “Never mind” she said before refocusing on the murder board “So, no visible entrance, no sign of a break in, how bad was the body burned?” she asked. “Charred to a crisp, all they had to I.D him was dental records” Wednesday replied as she handed Enid the file. “According to the sheriff, this was the 6th murder with the same M.O” Wednesday revealed. “Any connection between the victims besides their awful death’s?” Enid asked.

“Only one connection, each murder; the killer left a message” Wednesday revealed as she handed the evidence back with a piece of paper inside. Looking at the paper inside, Enid red it out loud “Justice is swift, justice is served, the system has failed us… time for a new system to rise” Enid read. She shook her head and handed it back to Wednesday “Hardly poetry, so obviously some kind of vigilante killing” she said. The raven nodded her head, but the look on her face spoke volumes “You’re not convinced” Enid said.

Shaking her head, Wednesday turned back to Enid “No. I’m not convinced” she admitted. “I checked none of them have any kind of criminal records” Wednesday revealed “I mean, there are a few parking tickets but that’s all.” Enid hummed to herself as she handed the evidence bag back before grabbing her jacket “Okay, well please make sure to put everything away when you’re finished” she said before leaving the dorm room. Wednesday watched her leave before returning her gaze to the murder board.

Her eyes narrowed as she turned back towards the door. The murder case was intriguing, but it was no where near as intriguing as the mystery of Enid Sinclair. Grabbing her jacket, she headed out the door and followed her roommate and best friend away from Nevermore academy. Enid made her way through the woods; a thick fog had rolled in on the forest leaving them barely able to see two feet in front of them. Wednesday could barely make out the pick jacket that Enid usually wore.

Walking through the graveyard, Enid continued to walk and Wednesday followed at a discreet distance until they left the graveyard and arrived at a quarry. The fog seemed to thicken around them, curling and weaving like spectral fingers through the ancient tombstones. Enid's steps were purposeful, unaffected by the eerie atmosphere that would have sent chills down most spines. The silence was punctuated only by the occasional rustle of leaves and the distant hoot of an owl.

Wednesday, ever vigilant, matched Enid's pace while maintaining a safe distance. Her curiosity was piqued; something was drawing Enid to this desolate place, and she intended to find out what it was. As they approached the edge of the quarry, the stark contrast of the jagged rocks against the fog made the landscape seem almost otherworldly.

Enid finally came to a halt at the precipice, her eyes scanning the depths below. She seemed to be searching for something, or perhaps someone. Wednesday inched closer, her sharp eyes never leaving Enid's form. Enid gazed down into the abyss, her eyes closing as she looked up to the sky as the sun broke through the clouds and shined on her. Enid looked breathtaking, bathed in the sunlight that shined on her but again she gazed into the dark abyss. Wednesday’s heart never beat before, but in this moment… it was pounding against her ribs.

Opening her arms wide, Enid closed her eyes and began to lean forward. Wednesday dashed towards the blonde, but it was too late… Enid plunged into the dark abyss. Her heart thundering in her chest, Wednesday reached the edge just in time to see Enid disappear into the shadows below. For a moment, the world stood still, the silence around her deafening. Wednesday’s heart broke into pieces, collapsing to the floor as she stared into the abyss.

Wednesday knelt in the quarry, unable to move as she began to sob. The tears she had always held back now flowed freely, a torrent of grief and despair. She felt an overwhelming sense of loss, a void that threatened to consume her. The fog seemed to close in, wrapping her in a cold embrace as the sun's rays vanished, leaving her in darkness once more. Minutes felt like hours as she remained there, her mind replaying the moment of Enid's fall repeatedly. Was there something she could have done? Something she missed?

These questions tormented her, each one a dagger to her heart.

Eventually Wednesday trudged back to Nevermore, how was she going to tell everyone what she saw. How was she going to tell them that Enid threw herself to her death.

But when she returned to Nevermore, she came to a sudden stop when she saw Enid standing in the quad laughing and joking. Wednesday's breath caught in her throat, her eyes widening in disbelief. The surreal sight of Enid, very much alive and seemingly untouched by the harrowing events, sent a wave of confusion crashing over her.

Enid turned, catching sight of Wednesday, and waving enthusiastically. "Hey, Wednesday!" she called out, her voice light and carefree, as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened.

Wednesday approached her slowly, her mind racing to make sense of what she was witnessing. "Enid... how are you here?" she asked, her voice trembling with a mix of relief and bewilderment.

Enid's smile faltered slightly as she noticed the tears streaked on Wednesday's face. "What's wrong? Did something happen?"

"Did something happen?" Wednesday echoed, incredulous. "I saw you... I saw you fall into the quarry. You were gone!”

Enid's eyes widened in surprise, and she quickly took Wednesday's hands in hers “You… you saw that?” she asked.

“Yeah… I saw it, now tell me!” Wednesday snapped, surprising their friends who were watching the scene in confusion.

Enid released a heavy sigh, pulling Wednesday back to the dorm room. Her heart racing, it was time for Wednesday to know the truth about her.

Once inside, Enid closed the door behind them and turned to face Wednesday, her expression serious. "Wednesday, there's something I need to explain," she began, her voice steady but filled with an underlying tension.

Wednesday's dark eyes bore into Enid's, searching for answers. "What is it? What aren't you telling me?" she demanded, her tone sharp yet tinged with a hint of vulnerability.

Enid took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts. "There's a part of me that I've kept hidden from everyone, even you. A part of me that has certain abilities."

Wednesday's brow furrowed in confusion. "Abilities? What do you mean?"

“As you know, I’m not a werewolf” Enid began as her heart began to race. “Everyone has often theorized that I was something else… but none of those theories came close to the truth” she explained.

Wednesday looked curious “I’ve had my theories” she admitted.

“It’s best if I showed you” Enid said as she took a deep breath in and closed her eyes.

From her back sprouted large, leathery wings, unfurling with a graceful but powerful motion. They were majestic, yet intimidating, each movement whispering of hidden strength and untold stories. A long, slender tail emerged, curling, and uncurling as if assessing its newfound freedom. Enid opened her eyes, now a deep shade of crimson as she smiles, exposing her fangs “I’m half human… half demon” Enid announced. None of the theories were right, half human and half demon.

How could anyone have guessed that?

Her mind went night Enid fought the Hyde.

Flashback:

Wednesday struggled against the Hyde’s grasp, its other claw raised to deliver the final blow but before it could. There was a fierce roar, and something slammed into it, causing its grip on Wednesday to break. Wednesday coughed violent as her saviour and the Hyde rolled along the ground before the Hyde was thrown off. Looking up, Wednesday stared at her saviour and saw… Enid?

“Enid?” Wednesday whispered, her eyes wide I awe and confusion. Their eyes locked, and Wednesday saw something in Enid’s eyes as the blonde’s lips curled into a smile. Slowly the Hyde got back to its feet and Wednesday “ENID… LOOK OUT!” Wednesday warned. The Hyde claw swung towards her, but Enid turned around in a blur of speed that was inhuman and grabbed its wrist. With little effort, she spun around and threw him hard into the nearby tree.

“Go… stop Crackstone” Enid called to Wednesday before turning back to the Hyde. The last image Wednesday saw of the Hyde and Enid was just as the two charged at each other. When Tyler was found the next day, he was a bloody mess and broken bones, and the trees around him were smashed to pieces. Enid had really done a number on him; Wednesday had never been prouder of her roommate and best friend.

Flashback Enid:

“So… the quarry?” Wednesday asked curious to know what happened in the quarry and why she jumped.

“The abyss where I jumped into; it’s a doorway… to hell” Enid revealed.

“You went to hell… and you didn’t take me with you?!” Wednesday replied, her eyes widening and before pouting “That’s my dream vacation!”

“I’ll take you there later” Enid replied as she smirked at her best friend’s response “Anyway, I had to check the list for your murder victims” she explained.

“There’s… a list?” Wednesday asked, really interested in learning the inner workings of her future home.

“Of course… the list is men and women who have made demon deals or have a one-way trip to hell for sins they committed” Enid answered as she reverted to her human form.

“So… what did you find?” Wednesday asked, hoping that Enid had more information about her investigation.

“Nothing… all the victims were all good men. Paid their parking tickets. Donated to charity. Built shelters for the homeless. One man recently gave $1’000 to a homeless man and put him up in a motel so he could clean up and get his life together” Enid revealed as she shrugged her shoulder “All have a one-way trip upstairs” Enid finished before smiling “But here’s some information… those men; aren’t in heaven nor in hell” she revealed.

“What?” Wednesday asked as she turned back to Enid confused “What do you mean?”

“I mean… their souls have completely vanished; their souls were ripped from their bodies before being burned alive” Enid revealed.

Wednesday turned back to the murder board “What is going on?”

Enid stood beside her, their hands grazing each other as they stared at the board.

Wednesday felt the spark between their hands when they touched but she never said anything… she was not the type to fall in love.

Was she?
