Shadows and Shapeshifters

Summary:

A lonely Slime, tending to her garden, finds the opportunity to get a better life in a new place.

Work Text:

The cavern’s stillness was comforting, the soft drip of water echoing gently across the rocky walls. In one corner, tucked away from prying eyes, Sarah tended to her delicate patches of moss and the small plants she had painstakingly cultivated. Alone, she allowed her natural form—that of a slime, gently pulsing in shades of green—to spread along the cave floor. She felt safe here, hidden from the world that so often misunderstood her.

Sarah’s mind drifted to memories of simpler times, of other slimes and the comforting warmth of community. But those thoughts were tinged with longing—she had never truly belonged after losing the ones who mattered. She wanted a family again, someone to share her stories with, to fill the gnawing emptiness that echoed inside her.

Suddenly, a whisper of wind carried through the cave, far too cold and sharp to be natural. The quiet drip of water stopped, as if time itself were holding its breath. Sarah’s entire form quivered, sensing a presence before seeing it.

At the mouth of her cave, the air shimmered, bending reality in on itself. WolfQueen appeared, cloaked in a dark majesty that seemed to swallow the torchlight. She was tall and imposing, red eyes glowing with an otherworldly power. she stood immaculate, every inch the commanding Creator she was rumored to be.

Sarah’s slimy mass trembled with a nervous instinct. She had, heard the rumors, the stories. And yet, she had never expected the Creator to appear here, of all places.

“My dear,” WolfQueen spoke, her voice smooth as silk sliding over steel. “You’ve been alone for some time now.”

Sarah felt a flush of alarm. Though she had no true ‘face’ in this form, WolfQueen’s piercing stare made her feel exposed. Instinctively, she condensed, shifting into her human guise—a red-haired woman with bright, curious eyes. Her heart pounded in her chest, but something about WolfQueen’s power also drew her in, like a dark flame she couldn’t resist touching.

“How… how did you find me?” Sarah asked, the words catching in her throat. She used her hands to smooth her now-human hair, a nervous habit betraying her fear.

WolfQueen stepped forward, regal and unhurried. “I find many things that interest me,” she replied, her wings stirring faintly at her back. “And you have quite the curious soul—an outcast yearning for belonging, a lonely creature with so many stories left untold.”

Sarah’s eyes widened. “You—came to offer…?”

“A deal,” WolfQueen finished, a small smile curling her lips. “I’ve watched you. You desire a family. Friends. A place to feel safe.” She gestured gracefully with one hand, and the cave’s torchlight seemed to flicker in response, shadows dancing with her every move. “I can give you that… and so much more.”

Sarah glanced back at her small garden of moss and plants, her heart constricting at the thought of leaving them. She recalled the warm memories of her fellow slimes, the sense of community she once had. But those days were gone. Now she was alone, longing for that lost sense of comfort.

“You… you can give me a new home? A new family?” Sarah asked softly, her voice trembling with a cautious hope.

“Yes,” WolfQueen promised, golden eyes alight with confidence. “A world far from the dangers and cruelties you’ve faced here. A world filled with all sorts of people—beings you’ve never encountered before, each one with stories you can collect. You will not be alone, Sarah.”

Sarah’s mind raced. She had dreamed of such a chance, an opportunity to leave her solitude and find meaningful connections again. But a shadow of doubt lingered. “What’s the price?” she managed, swallowing hard.

WolfQueen’s smile turned serpentine. “Merely your loyalty—and a willingness to leave behind what no longer serves you. There’s no need to cling to a past that has given you only pain and isolation.” She inclined her head. “And perhaps you’ll let those old memories fade, just enough to free yourself from the burden of longing.”

Sarah looked down at her hands, remembering the comforting dampness of the cave floor when she was in her slime form, the gentle echoes of other slimes she once called family. Her garden was the last remnant of that life. Could she truly walk away? Yet the promise of friends, of belonging, tugged at her heart with irresistible force.

“All right,” Sarah whispered, raising her gaze to meet WolfQueen’s. “I accept.”

A triumphant glimmer flashed in WolfQueen’s eyes. “Then come,” she said, extending an elegant, claw-tipped hand.

The moment their hands touched, the cave around them wavered. Sarah’s stomach lurched as if she were falling. In an instant, she felt a pull, an inexorable drag as the world around her dissolved. The comforting smell of earth and moss faded, replaced by a familiar, infinite darkness—the same void she had felt many times in her wandering dreams. This time, however, a certain warmth accompanied it, WolfQueen’s presence a tether that kept Sarah from panicking.

Her heart pounded. Was she truly leaving her world behind? She closed her eyes, bracing against the swirling blackness. WolfQueen’s grip tightened, firm and sure.

Together, they stepped forward, the cave’s reality peeling away until it was gone, leaving only the endless void. Sarah’s memories churned—her garden, her slime kin, the close press of earth—but the promise of family and safety echoed louder than loss.

At last, the darkness parted, revealing a new horizon waiting to be shaped by WolfQueen’s will. Though uncertain, Sarah allowed herself a faint smile. She had chosen to forget the ache of solitude and the pain of loneliness, trading it for the hope of belonging—whatever that might entail in the Creator’s domain.
