Chapter 1: The End Before The Beginning

Chapter Text

This was a bad idea, Walla knew this was a bad idea. But that didn't stop them from folding up the note in their hand and sliding it through the slot of Jewels' locker. It wasn't anything wild, really, just a small note, basically introducing themself with their number attached.

Ok, maybe they wrote a compliment or two on there and asked if she wanted to go out some time. But nothing more than that! Walla had no clue whether or not Jewels was taken, nor if she even liked them back. But it's not like Walla can't try anyway.

They immediately turned away and continued walking to class after slipping the note in. Hopefully, they'll see Jewels at lunch. Maybe she'll even come sit with them. Yeah, it's wishful thinking, but Walla still had a lovestruck look on their face as they walked the empty halls.

"Miss Fuschs, I'd appreciate it if you'd stop zoning out and pay attention when I ask you something." The teacher scolded, snapping Walla from their thoughts. "Es tut mir leid, ma'am. What was the question?" Walla asked sheepishly, self-conscious of the other kids looking directly at them.

"English, Miss Fuschs. I asked if you would stay for a few minutes after class to help me clean up, and it would be greatly appreciated." The teacher asked to which Walla swallowed and nodded. "Yes, ma'am, I'm happy to stay and help." They replied. The teacher gave her a nod before returning back to the lesson.

Walla tried to focus, but she was nervous about how Jewels would respond to the note. Sure, being gay wasn't necessarily taboo in Jamaa, but there sure weren't a lot of gay kids in the school. Let alone trans kids like Walla, a genderfluid queer kid who has a crush on the girl in the grade right below her, there's no telling how she'll react! Walla knew some kids saw them as a freak, sure. But that didn't bother them as much as it would, knowing the girl they had a crush on could possibly be homopho-

"Miss Fuschs?" A voice snapped them out of their thoughts. "Yes, ma'am? Tut mir leid- Sorry, I zoned out again-" Walla cut themself off when they saw the look on the teachers face. "Honey, that's what I wanted to talk to you about. Is everything okay? According to the other teachers, you've been zoning out all day, and I didn't believe it until I saw it happen multiple times in class today." The teacher said, concern clear on her face and in her words.

"I'm okay, I promise! I've just had a lot on my mind, I gave a note to my crush, and I'm worried how she'll respond-" "She? It's not that Jewels girl, is it?" The teacher said, almost sounding exasperated.

The change in tone caught Walla's attention.

"It is, actually. May I ask why you say it like that?" Walla asked curiously, confusion etched into their expression.

"With how much gossiping goes around in this high school, I'm surprised you don't know. Jewels has been dating that popular boy in the school band for a few months now. I forgot his name, but he has green streaks in his hair with the librarian looking glasses? Anyways, though. She's very possessive over him, and they're head over heels for each other. Their lockers are right beside each other and everything."

Walla stiffened at that. Jewels was straight? And in a relationship with Rex Harper?

"I- I had no idea, I haven't heard anything about that!" Walla panicked, hopefully Jewels' boyfriend doesn't hear about it, hopefully Jewels will just say 'No thanks.' and let it go. "I hope Rex doesn't take it the wrong way- I had no clue they were together! I didn't even think they knew each other!" Walla exclaimed, covering their face in shame.

"Honey, I'm sure if you explained, both of them will understand. It's not the end of the world, I promise." The teacher calmly told them. "At least now I know why you weren't paying attention in class; I won't tell your parents about it. But please try to participate a bit more tomorrow, okay?" The teacher scolded lightheartedly, to which Walla nodded. "Yes, ma'am. I will." They promised.

"Good, now off with you! Get to lunch before you run out of time and don't get to eat!" She shoo'd them out of the classroom, Walla giggling as they walked to the lunch hall.

Walla turned the corner and was immediately shoved into the wall to their left, effectively knocking the breath out of them. They turned towards the attacker to see it was the person they've been awaiting to see all day, Jewels Polka.

And she looked pissed.

"Hey Je-" Walla was cut off by the younger, "Don't say a fucking word." She spat, the venom in her voice making Walla instantly freeze and shut her mouth. "Why did you leave the note in his locker, huh? The entire school knows me and him are together, yet you have the audacity to leave a note with your fucking number on it for him? Explain yourself, Fuschs." Jewels gritted out, white eyes swirling with hatred.

Oh.

" She's very possessive over him, and they're head over heels for each other . Their lockers are right beside each other and everything."

Oh.

"I- I didn't know you both were together! I've never even seen you guys interact!" Walla explained, not knowing what to say or do. "Besides, the note was supposed to be for y-" They were cut off by Jewels lifting her silver necklace, practically shoving the 'R' pendant in their face.

"Me and him literally have matching necklaces with our initials on them! And our yearbooks have matching quotes! Are you stupid?" Jewels raged.

It was almost laughable just how much Walla underestimated how possessive Jewels is over Rex.

"The note wasn't-" Walla started, but was once again cut off by Jewels ranting. "I know what you meant by it, and I don't care! If you want him go find someone else for Mira's sake!"

And Walla snapped.

"I want you! I don't want him, I want you! The note was for you, not him! I must have gotten the lockers mixed up, but I was trying to put it in yours! But I didn't know you both were together anyway! I would have backed off if I knew!" Walla exclaimed, making Jewels tense up and shove herself away from them.

"I would never want a faggot like you." Jewels spat, looking at Walla with disgust and pure hatred before walking off, leaving Walla to sink down to the floor of the empty hallway.

What had they done?
