Work Text:
Valentines Day.
Twilight had nearly forgotten about the holiday altogether. It wasn't until he went to the grocery store with Anya that he remembered it and was reminded he had to participate.
Anya runs up to the blonde with a heart-shaped box in her hand, a bow wrapped around it obnoxiously.
"Papa, Papa," the girl hoists the box to show Loid. "You have to get this for Mama because Becky said Valentine's Day is for flirting and chocolate!"
Loid is...how to put this? Embarrassed to say the least. He and Yor aren't really together or have feelings for one another so...what would be the point? But, on the other hand, it likely won't upset Yor either way and if it makes Anya happy...plus appearances- especially for the neighbors.
Papa thinks too much.
Loid let Anya scan the box of chocolates at the self-checkout machine.
Honestly, she seemed more enthusiastic about it than Twilight. He never particularly liked nor cared for Valentine's Day, it was grim when he was a child and when he was older, he likely had no one to celebrate with unless he was with someone for a mission.
But, this was no different, right? He's with Yor for his mission, nothing more.
~~
Yor usually dreaded this holiday. In past years, it was filled with pestering from her co-workers and worried calls from her brother. But, this year was different. She was married—a wife.
The lounge area Yor and her co-workers spent the most time in. There was a hum of chatter among the women until Yor chimed in.
"What should a wife get her husband for Valentine's Day?"
Her coworkers looked at her, confused. Yor nearly forgot that they thought she'd been married for a year, not including time spent dating or as fiance's.
"I-I mean, neither of us liked to participate in Valentine's Day but I thought that since...this is our first one since we got married I should do something for him!" Yor's face was a cherry, but she hoped it came off as embarrassment for not knowing what to get her husband and not the story she made up.
Sharon and Camilia looked at each other until the blonde spoke. "It depends, do you think he wants something fluffy or sensual?"
Millie pipes up, "Valentine's Day should be sexy and fun! Not like when you're a teenager. Maybe you could pick up some new lingerie?"
Sharon digs her cigarette into the ashtray on the windowsill, "It could be nice. Since he has a kid, I'm sure it's been a while since you moved in together."
"That settles it then! Girl's trip!" Millie cheers and hustles the group out of City Hall (it just so happens that their lunch break had started minutes before).
Yor didn't own anything in the lingerie or uh... self-recreation department, nor has she ever thought to look for them. Her life has been focused on her assassination gig and her brother up until now. She's never had any prospects either.
The shopping trip was uncomfortable for Yor. She couldn't hide her flush whenever she walked past a lingerie store, let alone inside one. On top of all that, she had no idea what Loid even liked! How was she supposed to pick something?
She felt the most comfortable in red or black, though, she was sure she wouldn't have to hide blood stains on these items. Her coworkers concluded red was the best option for Yor to get, now she just had to decide which one she liked.
A worker at the store approached having noticed the group spending a lot of time browsing rather than picking up things they liked. She suggested a Valentine's Day edition (obviously marketing for the holiday, she had no real opinions on it,) It was a simple red bra and garter set with a heart pattern in the lace. The woman's sales pitch was convincing enough that Yor decided to get it, eliciting a relieved and tired sigh from her coworkers.
~~
"I'm home!" Yor announced, keeping the paper bag that held Loid's "gift" close to her body.
"Mama! Today at school, I did three whole sets of jump rope!" Anya retold her achievements proudly, but, was no doubt exaggerating it to an extent.
Loid gave Yor his normal greeting, asking her about her day.
"That reminds me, Ms. Martha will be here to collect Anya for her sleepover with Becky soon. Anya, did you remember to pack a toothbrush and a change of clothes?"
Yor's chest swelled with anxiety for a beat. He hasn't mentioned Valentine's Day once since Yor got home. Did she overthink this? Did he even get her anything? Is she that bad of a wife??
She got lost in her thoughts, fidgeting with the twine handle of the bag as she went to set it down in her bedroom. Was this a dumb idea?
Anya's sweet voice beckons for Yor.
"Mamaaa! Come say bye to me before I go to Becky's house!"
Yor snaps out of her trance and trots to the main room.
"Goodbye, my sweet girl. Have a good time--and be safe!"
Loid thanked Martha before closing the door, turning to Yor with a smile. "I almost forgot," He pulled a heart-shaped box of chocolates from the groceries and handed it to Yor. "Anya helped me pick it out."
Yor could've burst into tears just smelling the rich sweetness that practically emanated from the box. "Thank you so much!" Yor gagged through her emotions. Loid looked concerned and confused, but he was about 90% sure she liked the chocolates.
"I got something for you too--my coworkers helped me decide what to get since I haven't really done anything for Valentine's Day before...so I hope you like it," Yor said nervously, shifting her heel on the floor.
Loid smiled. "I'm sure I'll like it just fine."
"I'll go get it then." Yor nodded and scampered off to her room where she left the bag.
~~
What's taking her so long? Loid wondered, the tv remote twirling mindlessly in his hand.
"Yor, you okay?" He called down the hall.
"I-I'm fine! Just one second!" She sounded frazzled and it did little to settle Loid's concerns, but he remained seated for now.
Loid choked on his coffee and he was certain his face was redder than a police siren. Yor was- stunning. The crimson matched her eyes almost perfectly as if someone color-matched her. And by god did she have the body of a Greek goddess.
His fake wife could very well make any man or woman's mouth water.
He's so happy he gets to be one of them.
"I-I-uh--Yor," What even was he trying to say? He had no plans of speaking right now.
"Oh no, you hate it! Is it too much!? I wasn't sure what to do and my colleagues are all way more experienced in romantic stuff, they insisted we should go shopping and get something like this-- I'm sure I can find a way to return it!!" Words just kept coming out of her mouth. She was so swallowed by her embarrassment she didn't notice Loid get up. He put a hand on her cheek and he's reminded of that night they spent together when Yor's bed was broken. He remembers how she looked bathed in moonlight with a hair in her mouth and in the sunlight, her head in his lap.
"Yor, you look astonishing."
With just one sentence, all of her thoughts came to a halt.
"Do you want to...?" Loid didn't specify what but the air filled the silence.
Yor was taking a little long to reply, so Twilight removed his hand from her cheek. "Don't worry, we don't have to if you don't want to, Yor."
"...Maybe..someday soon?" Yor whispered to which Loid nodded with a smile, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. "Why don't I start you a warm bath instead and set up the shelf so you can have your chocolates?"
Yor smiles with rosy cheeks and nods.
