Work Text:
Schlatt had been… weird all day. Ever since Quackity woke up alone, without his lover's arms wrapped around him snugly holding him to his chest, normally he’d wake up first and melt into that comforting embrace for a bit until Schlatt woke up and kissed him on the cheek, muttering a good morning before slipping out of bed, that was always how mornings went. Soft and sweet one of the few truly peaceful moments he got with his husband but today he woke up alone. Cold and alone. It had been jarring and confusing and quite the upsetting awakening, but it was whatever.
Schlatt probably had an important meeting or just some paperwork he needed to urgently get done. He was the president after all there were more important things to attend to then himself. Schlatt had made that fact incredibly clear from day 1 but that didn't quell the weird feeling in his chest. Or the way the air just felt more tense than normal or just how everything about today just felt off and uncomfortable. He hated this feeling; it was utterly suffocating.
But Quackity didn't really have much of a choice to think about it or dwell on the what ifs, he was the vice president, and he had his own work to do and Schlatt would only get mad at him if he caught him sleeping in, the last thing he wants is to wake up to alcohol being poured on his face again . Quackity took a shaky deep breath as he stared into the bathroom mirror, fixing up his tie and making sure his suit was nice and neat. He missed the times he didn't have to spend so much time getting ready, he never cared much for his looks, always feeling quite comfortable in his own skin but..Schlatt was so big on him always being a pretty face for the nation.
So, he always puts extra work into his looks! He had to look perfect, For Schlatt, everything was for Schlatt. Most of his daily decisions were in favor of Schlatt now that he had the thought. He didn't make many selfish decisions all for the idea of pleasing others. He didn't like that actually. It made him feel nauseous and he couldn't help but frown but quickly buried that train of thought shaking his head as he splashed some water on his face putting on his sunglasses as he stepped out of the bathroom. Schlatt was still nowhere to be seen, but that was fine he didn't have to be around the man 24/7 of course. He felt lost without him. He was simply curious about his whereabouts though.
Quackity wasn't a huge fan of being away from Schlatt admittedly. He just never really knew what to do without him? He was so used to him always being around him just.. Not being around always felt weird, it felt borderline suffocating actually. The way boredom consumed him and all he could do is sit and think about how much he missed him. He wondered if something was wrong with him sometimes. How could you ever be attached to someone so much it hurts to be away from them? It was..unsettling and scared him, it made him feel dependent in a way he hated.
Schlatt brought out a lot of things in Quackity that scared him. Just that frightening level of attachment. It was probably normal, but it still made him nervous. If anything ever goes wrong or maybe somehow Schlatt is removed from his life he physically can't imagine a life without him, Just the mere idea of him being simply gone was unfathomable to a point he thinks if Schlatt ever disappeared… He simply would too. It's just a matter of the future he supposes. It's a frightening idea, that if he was to lose Schlatt he’d lose himself, Because Schlatt is what makes him..him? Does that even make sense?
It's like he only exists for the benefit of the other, Everything that's happened by the direct action of Schlatt being in office is his fault whether indirectly or not. Because he combined his votes with the man Tommy and Wilbur lost the election. Because he combined his votes with the man the two got exiled, because he combined votes with the man Wilbur lost a life. Because he combined votes with that terrible man Manburg came into existence. This all was his fault because of that one simple decision. If he hadn't had done that Wilbur would have won the election and he wouldn't be standing here right now.
It's a frightening thought how much one single action can change the lives of so many people forever. There's no way to turn back time. He isn't sure how long he just stood there in the empty hallway thinking, zoning out into the never-ending train of thought of how much his actions have affected the people around him, he wonders if the others blame him for everything. They should he felt because they'd be right to do so. Quackitys hands balled into fists when suddenly there was a tap on his shoulder and Quackity jumped in mild surprise only to turn around and be met face to face with the man himself JSchlatt.
“Oh! Uh hey Schlatt- Sorry was uh a little zoned out there” Quackity explained quickly a little frazzled.
“Whatever didn't ask Quackity, stop standing there like a fucking idiot and get to work I didn't make you my vice president for you to stand around and think so much” Schlatt replied narrowing his eyes at the shorter. Quackity instinctively shrunk under his gaze, frowning at the others words involuntarily tensing.
“Uhm..Did i do something wrong? Are you alright, you just seem a bit more off today than usual?” Quackity hesitated in his wording unsure how to phrase it really, He just seemed weirdly hostile. This is the first time they've interacted at all today and Schlatt just… It's whatever he was being stupid just standing here practically staring holes into the wall.
“No. You didn't other than waste time, Im fine” Schlatt paused. He just seemed tense in general, irritated might be the word. But he took a deep breath and placed a hand on the back of Quackitys head bringing him closer pressing a kiss to his head before letting him go “Just go finish the paperwork pumpkin, Join me on the couch later we can watch something” He said with a half dismissive tone but that was normal, Quackity smiled his face flushing a faint red as Schlatt pressed a kiss to his head.
“Alright! Can do that no problem” He grinned quickly hurrying off to his eyes just missing the way Schlatt rolled his face, yet smiled fondly at the sight of Quackity happy, Quackity would have benefited from seeing Schlatts softer moments, but he never would get that chance too after all Schlatt hid his vulnerable emotions incredibly well.
Quackity finished his paperwork rather quickly, Well..As quick as like 3 hours was considered, Schlatt practically dumped all the legal shit onto him he didn't really get much of a choice when he was forced to take most of the workload but Quackity never complained he knew better than to complain about anything Schlatt did. Not that it ever amounted to anything, sure Schlatt sometimes agreed to change things or rectify specific behaviors. But he never committed. He’d promise yet never follow through continuously repeating the cycle to the point Quackity just stopped trying.
It’s whatever, Quackity doesn't mind doing most of the work anyways. Whatever he can do to help Schlatt he enjoys.
Quackity stood up from his office chair, stretching out his sore limbs from sitting at his desk nonstop for so long before leaving the room, quickly making his way to the living space where of course Schlatt already was. Sitting there on the couch watching whatever was on TV. Quackity smiled with something akin to adoration seeing him, the man he chose to so desperately love. He made his way over to the couch and sat down next to Schlatt.
“I finished up the work for today” He hummed absently when Schlatt did not acknowledge him right away.
“That's great pumpkin, good job” Schlatt replied but it was pretty..dry. He didn't sound like he meant it at all there was no love in his words when he called him pumpkin. It was so dismissive in a way that made his chest hurt, and that suffocating feeling came back full force, Quackity swallowed thickly.
“Are you uh- Okay? You're very just dismissive today I think is the word” Quackity inquired with a head tilt.
“I've already said I'm fine you're reading too much into shit” Schlatt huffed, and finally some emotion. If only that emotion wasn't irritation.
“Are you sure because you really don't seem-” Quackity was cut off as Schlatt interrupted him, His tone straight up angry as he snapped at Quackity.
“Oh my GOD, would you just shut up?! Your so fucking annoying sometimes its straight insufferable. I've said I'm fine, How about you take my word for it like a normal person” Schlatt raised his voice straight up insulting Quackity in a fit of rage. Quackity flinched back instinctively, his eyes widening as he tried to fight the tears threatening to fall from his eyes as his throat ran dry when Schlatt just didn't do anything after that, With a simple glare he went back to watching TV.
Quackity sat there for a second, tense. Tense and shocked at the outburst, he hadn't meant to upset the other he was just concerned.. Was that a bad thing? Maybe.. Yeah, maybe he was in the wrong. Schlatt thought so at least. He should've listened he's just reading too much into things of course. Quackity took a deep breath and simply yet hesitantly leaned against Schlatt slightly only for the other to wrap and arm around his shoulders and pull him close to his chest. A welcome and pleasant surprise.
Quackity curled into Schlatt's side and buried his face into his chest, melting into the comforting warmth of the other as his fingers carded through his soft black hair. It was so…Loving. He felt loved and that's all that mattered. Who cares if he got snappy sometimes that was of course only his own fault. He kept asking of course he was going to come off annoying. He was being annoying he should've known that. He should've trusted Schlatt’s word it was foolish not to.
Sure, him yelling hurt him but he deserved it. The pain in his chest was a punishment. The hurt he felt was a punishment for him being stupid and not getting the message.
And if later that night Schlatt admitted he wasn't fine and was in fact upset all day and he was completely right, Quackity would still consider himself to have been in the wrong. Because Schlatt is always right of course. He’s not allowed to think anything otherwise.
