Chapter 1: The Calm Before the Storm
Summary:
[this a brief retelling of the pilot episode. if you want bone angst, skip to final chapter]
this chapter is a PROLOGUE for the actual fic, being the day everything changed for the contestants
Chapter Text
The pale grey sky sprawled along the horizon: a kaleidoscope of muted colours stretching across the expanse of the world.
The world that was created for them.
Before Oodle's interference, the inhabitants of this realm lived a life of simplicity. Monotony. Melancholy, even. In an inescapable land devoid of motion, expression, and change, the objects simply existed. Their existence was a cycle of stillness, an eternity of nihility where time itself held no meaning.
While none of the objects had any recollection of their supposed 'birth', their lives had been this way for as long as they could remember - if memory could even be trusted in a place where nothing ever changed. It was a silent, endless void. Yet, it was the only place they could call home; it was the only place they had ever seen, after all.
They did not laugh, for they had no mouths. They did not move, for they had no limbs. They did not cry, for they had no eyes. They simply sat, attempting to entertain themselves in the unbroken cycle of boredom they were forever trapped in.
Until the day he arrived.
The bleached ether did something it had never done before - it cracked, like a sheet of glass shattering under hefty pressure. A ripple spread across the world, a pulse of colour, of energy - of something that was not stillness.
Descending from the newly formed rift, came Oodle.
He was different, in the sense he was contrastingly mobile. He had everything they didn't, and a presence that made the very fabric of their simple world tremble. Convincing the demigod to stay provided a turning point for their once meaningless lives. They were gifted with purpose, and similar entertainment, as their reality itself seemed to twist and reshape over time.
Oodle gave them everything they could have ever wanted.
Life. Purpose. Leisure. Entertainment. Their once stiflingly soundless realm was now echoing with rowdy voices, cheers, and laughs that resounded beyond the invisible stratosphere.
Yet, everything wasn't enough. Not for one object, at least.
Chapter 2: The Tempest
Summary:
Here we go angst time!! this chapter takes place before Bone meets 'Red Eyes'.
Chapter Text
Weather was a foreign concept to the contestants.
When Oodle introduced varying climates to the objects, the concepts were initially accepted with awe, as the latter were fascinated with temperate conditions having the ability to change. They bathed in the pleasant heat of the basking sun, as the experience was a new one, but a very much welcome one.
However, not all types of weather provided similar satisfactory experiences.
The rain hammered against the jagged walls of the cave, dripping from its uneven edges, barricading the tunnel as a border of relentless liquid. The pitter-patter rhythm of the downpour mirrored the grief brewing vehemently in Bone’s chest.
He sat curled against the damp stone, the dim light of the overcast sky barely illuminating the cavern's irregular interior. A shallow pool of water had gathered near the entrance, seeping through the orifices of the cave, rippling with every sudden gust of wind. Bone traced the edge of the puddle with his new fingers, languidly fixated on his blurred reflection. His mouth, a gift given to him by Oodle, remained pressed in a thin, trembling line.
He had everything now: limbs to walk, eyes to see, and a mouth to speak. Yet, what was the point of it all if no one would listen to him - if no one would even look at him? Bone clenched his fists, the ache in his chest spreading like a fracture through his entire being. Even after everything they still avoided him, still upheld the restraining order as if he were a plague, a threat. He didn’t understand. He never had. What had he done to deserve this?
Wasn't life supposed to be improve for him, now they had a purpose? Something to live for?
The fierce wind blew, carrying faint echoes of laughter from the campsite far in the distance. His team. His 'teammates'. He’d tried, countless times, to approach them, to show them he wasn’t just some monstrous outcast - that there was more to him asides from his apparent criminal record. Yet, each attempt ended the same, with Telescope’s piercing glare, and the others stepping back, away from him, as if he carried something contagious. Those moments stabbed at him, sharper than any words they could have thrown his way.
Bone’s hand shook as he reached up to touch his face. He traced the edges of his new mouth, the unfamiliar curve of his lips. Oodle had called it his very own special gift. A way to start the gameshow with ease, to quell the demigod's incessant boredom.
“Now you can speak,” Oodle had exclaimed, beaming. “Now you can show them who you really are!”
But what was the point of a voice if no one wanted to hear it? What was the use of seeing the world when it turned its back on you? Bone’s shoulders sagged, his fingers slipping away from his face. He proceeded to stare at his distorted reflection, wavering in the steadily increasing puddles of water, with the dim light of the moon casting shadows that barely met the entrance of the cave. He continued to watch the hypnotizing bodies of liquid, until he could barely recognize himself.
“Why?” he faintly whispered, his voice faltering under the weight of the question. It was the first word he had spoken in days. The sound echoed through the cave, swallowed by the rain and wind. No answer came, of course. There never was one. Bone hugged his knees to his chest, his newfound limbs trembling with a mixture of cold and despair.
He thought back to the day the game began, feeling hopeful and excited. There was so much to do now, so many endless possibilities! He wanted friends - he wanted to belong. But the other objects' harboured feelings from before Oodle's arrival remained prominent. From the very beginning, they continued to look at him with suspicion, with disdain.
The restraining order had been a cruel decision - he thought he would at least have the chance to prove himself before being treated like a simple malefactor. Now, it was a chain that bound him to this solitude, to this cave where the responsive echoes of his own voice were his only companions,.
The rain began to ease, but the weight on Bone’s chest remained. He pushed himself to his feet, his new legs wobbling slightly as he walked to the cave entrance. The world outside was grey and empty; a pitiful, monotonous sight. He thought about stepping out, about trying again to approach them - to break through the wall they had built around him.
But he already knew how that would end. The laughter would die, the conversations would halt, and they would scatter like leaves in the howling wind, leaving him alone once more. Bone’s hands curled into fists, the sharp edges of his fingers digging into his palms. He let out a shaky breath, his voice a mere murmur lost to the unceasing storm.
“What’s the point?”
Bone decides he doesn't like the concept of weather. He doesn't like storms at all.
Once again, he turned back into the cave , his steps slow and heavy. The shadows welcomed him, wrapping around him in a cold smothering embrace. Bone sank back to the ground, his eyes fixed on the flickering reflection in the pool. A single tear rolled down his face, disappearing into the moist yet rocky surface below.
No one came for him. No one ever would.
