Chapter Text

“Sable? Is that you?” A red haired figure approached the campfire. “Is that really you? I thought I would never see you again!” She exclaimed, happiness shining through her voice.

The other girl, who had been sitting on a log next to the pile of burning wood, quickly stood up and ran to the figure.

“I’m so glad to see you Mikaela.” Sable whispered. The girls embraced and held each other tight for what felt like forever. The only sound being the crackling of the fire.

“I’m glad to see you too.” Mikaela replied after a while.

The duo let go and took a second to look at each other. Sable was wearing a black, long sleeve top, a dark skirt and a pair of sneakers. Her white hair with purple streaks framed her face in the moonlight. Mikaela was dressed in black. Her boots, pants, shirt, vest and hat were all dark, the only color being her red locks.

“Where are we Sable?”

A moment of silence. “I have no clue,” The girl replied “But I’m happy you’re here with me.”

“An actual compliment? From you Sable? Are you ill?” Mikaela laughed.

“Maybe, maybe.”

As Mikaela sat down next to the campfire she took in her surroundings. The dark and eerie woods were a contrast to the bright full moon. A million stars covered the sky, more than Mikaela could ever count. Except for the flames in front of her there didn’t seem to be more accommodations around. It was just her, Sable, the fire, the trees and the sky.

“Quiet, isn’t it?” Sable said, while she sat down next to her friend. “I wish I could sit here forever.”

“Why don’t we?” Mikaela wondered out loud while she looked at the stars.

Sable didn’t reply.

The girls must have dozed off while stargazing. When they woke up, they were somewhere else in the woods. Mikaela opened her eyes first.

“What the fuck is this?” She asked out loud. Disoriented, she looked for her friend, who was still on the ground. She grabbed Sable’s shoulders and started shaking them. “Sable, Sable wake up. Something’s happening.”

The goth finally reacted and quickly got on her feet. “Shit. We need to hurry, I don’t think we have much time.”

“Sab, why do I have a flashlight? And what even is that in your hand?” The redhead asked, pointing to the box the girl was holding.

“It’s a med kit. You can take it, I’ll take the flashlight.” Sable handed Mikaela the med kit and then took the flashlight. “Okay, let’s go.”

“Go where?”

“I’m not sure, but we can’t stay here either.”

After a short walk they arrived at a large tower. “I guess we go in?” Sable suggested, making a nod with her head towards the building.

“What are we even looking for?” Her friend asked while they moved towards the door.

Sable answered: “We’re looking for generators. We need to repair them.”

“Wait, how do we even repair a gen-” Mikaela noticed something on the ground that made her forget what she was saying. She stood still and grabbed Sable by her arm to make sure she didn’t move forward. “Is that a bear trap?”

They crouched and inspected the thing on the ground. It was barely visible, the mud was the same color as the rust, but on the ground lay a bear trap. Mikaela wondered if it had been used before, there was some old rusty blood on the side of the trap.

“Watch.” Sable declared. She grabbed a stick and threw it in the center of the thing on the ground. With a loud snapping sound the trap shut. Mikaela shivered at the thought of what it could do to something different than a stick.

Sable stepped over the trap and continued her way inside. She whispered “Come on Mik, we gotta move.” Inside there was a set of stairs. They made their way up, while carefully checking if there weren’t more bear traps around. Upstairs, they found a generator.

“So what now?” Mikaela asked, while approaching the machine.

“Well, we repair it. Obviously.” She softly hit her friend in the shoulder. It felt like old times for a second.

Mikaela crouched next to the generator and looked at how it was constructed. It seemed like some cables needed to be attached to each other. She tried to connect them, but they only gave a small bolt of energy before breaking again. The red head tried again, and again, and again.

The generator started working faster and faster until the light on the top was almost done. The friends worked in silence, focussed on what they were doing. They were so busy with the generator they didn’t hear the footsteps outside until they were already on the stairs.

When Mikaela noticed the steps she immediately moved away from the generator with a loud explosion. “Sable! I hear something!” She wanted to whisper but ended up almost yelling instead. Sable also let the generator go and together they moved to the corner of the room. They weren’t sure what to expect until they saw an unfamiliar woman coming up the stairs and moving towards them.

“Hi there!” The woman said. She had dark dreads and was wearing a colored blouse.

“Who are you?” Sable snapped.

“My name’s Claudette, nice to meet you too.” Claudette replied a bit annoyed.

Sable stared at the woman for a few seconds. Then she decided to not bother and just keep working on the generator. Mikaela wanted to help, but Claudette took her spot. She rolled her eyes but then decided to take a break and look outside to see what was happening there instead. With the sound of the generator behind her she watched how the moonlight was reflecting on the trees, the big pile of wood, the random wooden structures. She saw another person running, a bit further away from the tower. She also saw another figure.

It didn’t seem like a normal person. It was holding a cleaver and a set of bear traps. As the figure got a bit closer she noticed a mask with a grin. Her heart started beating faster and faster. Who were they?

“Sable, I think it’s not safe here.” Mikaela whispered. Her voice quivered as she whispered, barely audible over her pounding heartbeat.

“I think so too.” Sable replied, coming towards Mikaela. She put a hand on the girl's shoulder and looked out the window. The figure had disappeared but they both had a feeling it was still close. It didn’t take long until they heard footsteps downstairs again, their hearts beating in their chests.
