Work Text:

Shawn woke up to the news that school was cancelled. Ice on the roads, and all that.

He left his bed and immediately wanted to get back under the covers. He turned up the space heater in his room and held his hands there for a while, letting them warm up.

After pulling on a sweater and jeans, Shawn went into the living room, where Jon was pouring a mug of steaming coffee. Shawn opened the cupboard and took out one of his own mugs.

The warm coffee felt nice in his consistently cold hands, before he added the creamer. Then he sat down on the couch, burrowing down in one of the throw blankets.

"Cozy there, Hunter?" Jon asked.

Shawn took a sip of his coffee. "Toasty as hell, man."

A few blocks away, Topanga was already up and at em, putting on a coat over her sweater and scarf. She walked around her room, looking for a hat as she dialed on her cordless.

"Hey, Panga."

Topanga paused. "How'd you know it was me?"

Shawn rolled his eyes, not caring that she couldn't see. "Who else would call me this early in the morning?"

"Well, you were awake, yeah?"

"Running on four hours of sleep and caffeine." He took a drink of the coffee. "Anyway, why are you calling?"

"Have you looked outside?"

"Not yet. There's no school."

Topanga finally found her hat, and put it on. "Look outside."

Shawn put his coffee on the table and wrapped the blanket around himself, walking over to the fire escape window. "Holy shit."

Snow.

The whole of Philadelphia was freshly dusted with snow, the flakes still falling down onto the city below. Shawn exhaled softly, taking in the beauty of the sight. "Wow," he breathed.

"I'm going to call Cory and see if we can all go over. He's got the best yard."

"What for?"

"What do you mean what for? Look at the snow, Shawn! It's begging me to jump in. So… you in?"

Shawn downed the rest of his coffee. "Yeah, why not?"

Topanga jumped a little on her feet. "Okay, let me call Cory and Angela."

Shawn went to put on his leather jacket and a scarf that was hanging by the door after he hung up the phone. He was positive Cory would agree, he loved the snow. He decided to go ahead and go, so he'd get there before the girls did.

"Hey, Jon, I'm gonna go over to Cory's in a bit," he said, looking around the apartment for his gloves and hat. He found the hat and put it on.

"In that?"

Shawn rolled his eyes. He knew Jon was talking about the hat. He loved that hat. Most people hated it. "Yes."

"You look like that kid from Christmas Story."

"Whatever you say, man." Shawn found his gloves in his pocket and put them on, before pulling on his boots. "Hopefully I don't freeze before I get there."

"Have fun."

"I will."

In the Matthews house, Cory was waking up to his own warm and toasty room. The sun was just starting to shine through the blinds, and Eric was still sound asleep. He could faintly hear the sounds of the TV in the living room, announcing the school closures. He waited with baited breath to hear John Adams announced, and when it was, he burrowed back into the blankets, deciding to sleep in a little longer.

Until the phone rang. Cory picked it up before it could ring a second time.

"What do you want, Topanga?"

Topanga couldn't find her gloves. "How'd you-"

"No one else would call me this early in the morning."

"Can I come over? And Shawn and Angela? You've got the best yard for a snow day."

Cory vaulted out of bed, looking out the window. "That's so much snow!" he exclaimed. "Come over, I'll get ready."

He hung up the phone before Topanga could even say goodbye, rushing to get dressed.

Topanga dialed the last number on her list. It did ring a few times before being answered.

"Topanga, it's so early."

"Angela, hey-"

"Give me one good reason why I shouldn't hang up and go back to sleep."

"I'm going to Cory's to play in the snow, please come with me?"

Angela was still laying in bed, blankets pulled up to her chin. "You're so lucky I love you," she grumbled.

Topanga giggled. (Ugh, what kind of lovestruck teen was she?) "I'll pick you up on the way there."

"Uh-huh… bye." Angela hung up the phone, willing herself to get out of bed so she could get ready.

Topanga put on her boots and let her parents know she was leaving.

Angela felt she was sufficiently bundled up by the time Topanga got to her house, wearing a puffer jacket over her clothes, as well as a hat, scarf, mittens, and snow boots.

Topanga gave her outfit a once over. "Can you put your arms down?" she joked.

Angela walked out of the house, shutting the door behind her. "I could go back inside. I could be huddling by the heater, drinking hot cocoa. But instead I'm going to play in the snow. Which, for the record, will consist of me standing there while you play."

"I'll throw a snowball at you."

"I'll break up with you."

"You wouldn't."

Angela crossed her arms as she and Topanga set off towards Cory's house. "You don't know that."

Topanga kissed her. "I do."

Meanwhile, Shawn was climbing up the ladder to the tree house, and crawling through the window to Cory's room. Cory was not there, but Eric was just sitting up in bed. "You track that snow in and Mom will kill you," he said.

Shawn rolled his eyes and saluted, "Sir, yes sir," before going back out the window.

He started climbing down the ladder, and jumped halfway down, before slipping and falling back. "Shit!"

Cory came out the kitchen door, running over to Shawn. "Hey, are you okay?"

Shawn groaned as Cory helped him up. "Just peachy, babe."

"The girls aren't here yet," Cory said. "It's just us for now. So…" he trailed off, looking everywhere but Shawn's cold flushed face.

"So I won't have any witnesses when I pour snow down your coat."

Cory laughed. "You wouldn't."

Shawn shrugged. "Well, maybe if I was preoccupied doing something else…"

Cory grabbed Shawn's cold face with his warm hands and kissed him. Shawn smiled into the kiss, putting his arms around the Cory's neck. Cory pulled away suddenly.

"Your hands are like ice!"

"Yeah, I walked all the way from the apartment, of course I'm cold."

Cory grabbed Shawn's hands in his own, trying to warm them up, and he kissed his knuckles.

"Hope we're not interrupting anything." Angela and Topanga walked into the yard.

"Hey, girls," Shawn greeted. "I was just about to put snow down Cory's shirt, anyone want to join?"

"Hey!"

Angela brushed the snow off of the patio bench and sat down, shivering. "I'll be right here if anyone needs me," she said, crossing her arms.

"She's been like this the entire way over," Topanga said.

"The first snow always feels the coldest," Shawn pointed out. "At least for me."

Cory scooped up a handful to snow and poured it down Shawn's jacket. "Victory!"

"Hey, asshole!" Shawn grabbed some snow, packing it into a ball and throwing it at Cory, who tried to dodge, failing and getting a face full of snow.

Topanga laughed, before getting hit by another snow ball, from Cory. She made her own, and threw it back, but this time he successfully dodged, and the snowball hit Angela in the shoulder.

"Topanga!"

"Sorry, Ange!"

Angela packed together some snow and threw it at Shawn's head, and he threw one back.

The full blown snowball fight came to an end when Cory tackled Shawn into the snow, and all four teens burst into a fit of laughter. Topanga layed down next to them, making a snow angel. Angela tried brushing the snow off of her gloves, the cold seeping into her hands. Then she sat next to Topanga, drawing a halo over her head.

Topanga sat up, and Angela kissed her shortly. "Your lips are cold," Topanga said with a little laugh.

"My everything's cold," Angela said.

The group was interrupted when the kitchen door opened. "I thought I heard a group of ruffians out here," Mrs. Matthews said. "School gets cancelled and all civilization goes out the window," she joked.

"Mom, who needs civilization when you have snow?"

"Oh, of course," she said. "Now, do any of your ruffians want hot cocoa?"

Angela was the first to accept, immediately walking into the house and taking off her snow covered coat, and the others followed her in.

Topanga had her cocoa with nine marshmallows exactly. Cory took his with enough marshmallows to cover the surface of the drink. Angela put a swirl of whipped cream on hers, and some peppermint shavings over top. And Shawn had an ungodly amount of marshmallows and whipped cream.

The four of them were nestled together on the couch, Topanga sitting with her legs over Angela's lap under a throw blanket, and Cory and Shawn leaning against each other with Shawn's arm around Cory's shoulder. They had set up a movie to watch, but none of them were paying attention to anything other than the warmth between their respective partners.

They would go back outside later, Shawn bringing his camera to take pictures of his friends, and Angela lamenting about the cold, and Cory and Topanga building a snowman, decorated with Shawn's scarf and Cory's mittens and Topanga's hat (Angela offered her hat, but Topanga insisted to use her's instead so Angela wouldn't be any colder than she already was.)

But then, it was them and the fireplace and the hot cocoa.

Notes:

Y'all it fucking snowed where I live what the hell that's not supposed to happen there's only like four inches but still. My sisters and my dog and I had a blast playing in the snow and I took photos until my camera battery died lol. And then I wrote this after I came inside. So yeah.
