Work Text:
“I can’t stand you.” Sakusa says one day, when they’re taking their break after a long day of practice.
“Then sit down.” Atsumu says, rolling his eyes.
“Can you ever get along?” Inunaki says, sighing. “I really don’t want to hear you two argue today.”
“Well when Miya says something stupid, I have to correct it.” Sakusa said, shaking his head. “I can’t just leave it there.”
“Well if you didn’t have such a stick in your ass we wouldn’t have an issue.” Atsumu says, giving him a look.
“Do you two hate each other or something?” Hinata asks. “I didn’t remember it being this bad in highschool.”
“You barely talked to us in highschool.” Atsumu said, reminding him. “We saw each for nationals tournaments and that was it. I saw Kageyama more than you because of Kawa’s stupid little club.”
“If anything. Miya and I saw each other more.” Sakusa said. “Since our schools were somewhat close.”
“Whatever.” Hinata said sullenly, taking a drink from his water bottle.
“You guys knew each other during high school?” Tomas asked. “That’s a long time to know someone.”
“Since second year, yeah.” Atsumu said. “It was love at first sight.”
“You were probably the singularly most annoying person I had ever met. I wonder how Komori lived with you during training camp. I saw how much stuff you had in the bathroom” Sakusa said flatly. “Not much has changed.”
“You’re just mad my skin care products take up a whole shelf.” Atsumu said, smirking.
“I blame Oikawa for that. You do not need that much stuff.” Sakusa said.
“And you have a whole shelf for hair care products but you don’t see me complaining.” Atsumu pointed out. “Sounds a bit hypocritical to me, Omi.”
“Wait,” Inunaki asks, frowning. “How do you know what’s in his bathroom?”
Atsumu gives his a confused look. “Considering it’s my bathroom as well, I feel like I would have to know.”
“That’s what you’d like to think.” Sakusa muttered.
“Whatever.”
Hinata looks between the two of them, eyes narrowing.
A look of horrible realization crossed over Inunaki’s face. “Wait, do you two live together?”
Before they could respond, Bokuto comes over. He grins, and said, “Tsum-Tsum, Akaashi needs your help. He says call him right away.”
“Got it.” Atsumu said, pulling out his phone. He rang Akaashi’s number as he walked away.
BeforeInunaki could ask again, the practice was called for the day, and people dispersed.
It seems the mystery would continue.
“Here, you have my pickles.” Sakusa said, handing them to him. “You know I hate them.”
“Thanks Omi, you’re the best!” Atsumu said, grabbing the pickle slice from his sandwich.
Hinata watched as he stole it from Sakusa’s plate and popped it into his mouth. Often times, he wondered how Atsumu could get away with all of that, since if it was anyone else, they would get the death stare and a curt insult.
He would know, that’s what he got last time he tried.
He supposed though, when you’ve known someone for so long, it becomes second nature. He and Kageyama did the same thing, even though according to Tanaka, they bickered like an old married couple.
“So, what was this club you were mentioning earlier?” Inunaki asked. “And who is Kawa?”
They ignored Sakusa’s “Oh great, here we go again,” To Inunaki‘s question.
Tomas nodded. “Yeah, I’m curious too.”
“Wait, do you guys not know who Kawa is?!” Atsumu said, eyes widening. “I swear I’ve talked about him before.”
“Is he your boyfriend or something?”Inunaki asked, grinning.
Sakusa rolled his eyes. “It’s his best friend. Though, sometimes I do wonder.”
“You’re just jealous you don’t have a friendship like us.” Atsumu said, rolling his eyes.
“Yeah Oikawa is great! We met up in Brazil when I lived there.” Hinata said, smiling. “I remember Kageyama talking about your setter’s club.”
“Yeah,” Atsumu said, giving a small look of disgust. “I will never forgive Kenma for subjecting me to hanging out with him that often.”
Hinata felt a flash of protectiveness against his best friend and biggest rival. “What’s wrong with him?”
Atsumu gives him a long look. “What’s right with him?”
At that, Hinata can’t entirely disagree. While he had come far from high school, Kageyama is still the socially awkward person from then. Just a bit more tactful.
“I guess.”
“Woah, do you mean Oikawa Tooru of the Club Athletico San Juan? The same guy who’s in line for the national Argentina team for the next Olympics?” Tomas asked him. “How did you guys even become friends?”
“Funny story.” Atsumu said, shaking his head in amusement. “But we’ve been friends since high school.“
Apparently not going to divulge any more information about their meeting, Atsumu shrugs.
Inunaki says to him, “I don’t believe you.”
“Oh, no,” Sakusa said, annoyed. “The amount of times I’ve walked into the living room to see them chatting in Spanish is too many to count. They’re very close.”
“He had some gossip to share!” Atsumu frowned, crossing his arms. He said something in Spanish, which Hinata assumed was an insult. “Anyway, here’s a pic of us the last time he visited.”
“Who’s the girl and the kid?” Tomas asked, swiping the photos withInunaki. “And the guy holding the baby?”
Atsumu took his phone back once they were done, and said, “Oh, that’s Sakura, his sister and her son. We tried to get her husband to take the photos, but oh man her newborn was so fussy we couldn’t take many. She cried when she left his arms.”
Inuaki frowned and said, “Wait… then who was taking the-”
“Hey hey hey!” Bokuto said, sliding into a seat next to Atsumu. Hinata grinned and gave him a high five. “Sorry I was late, I needed to drop off something Akaashi forgot.”
“Oh, did he like the new onigiri at my brother's shop?” Atsumu asked him. “I passed on the information Keiji gave me.”
“Yep!” Bokuto added, nodding. “Vivian was nice enough to let us try it for free since we gave the idea!”
“How she can stand to be with my brother is beyond me.” Atsumu muttered. “But I’m sure he’d say the same about me.”
The food was served and everyone dug in.
The conversation flowed as topics died and came up,Inunaki asked. “Christmas is coming up soon. What should I get for my girlfriend?”
Atsumu frowned, looking like was thinking about something. “Good question. What does she like?”
Inunakilooked thoughtful. “I always get her jewelry, but maybe I should get something else?”
“Has she expressed needing anything?” Sakusa asked. “Or has she been eyeing something that she hasn’t bought herself yet.”
“Ooo that’s good.” Atsumu said. “Last year Omi got me this great tv I really wanted but it was way too much for me.”
Sakusa rolled his eyes. “Well you wouldn’t shut up about it, what else would I get you?”
“Awww Omi, you’re too sweet.” Atsumu said, laughing.
“I got Kageyama a new volleyball.” Hinata said, shrugging. “He seemed to like it.”
“He would, that volleyball obsessed freak.” Atsumu said, amused.
“You have no room to talk.” Sakusa said, rolling his eyes. “You’re just as obsessed.”
“Whatever.”
“Wait, why would you buy a gift for Atsumu?”Inunaki asked.
“Yeah.” Tomas agreed.
Atsumu shared a look with Sakusa, and Hinata wondered what that was about. “…Why wouldn’t he?”
Bokuto said. “I got a great book for Keiji. He liked it a lot. He’s been talking about it for ages.”
“Ooo was it the magic one?” Atsumu asked him. “I need to ask him what he thought, because I want to read that for our next book club night.”
“You’re in a book club?” Inuaki asks.
“I want to join!” Hinata said, jumping up and down in his seat. He couldn’t believe that they had a club he was excluded from! “Reading is fun.”
“Sorry Shoyo, this is just for me, Kawa, and Keiji.” Atsumu said. “But we can make our own club for something if you want! You, me, and Bokuto?”
He grinned, happy with the compromise. “Sounds great!”
“Wow, I love feeling excluded.” Tomas said, sarcastically.
“Me too.” Inunaki agreed. “What a great feeling.”
“You two are just over dramatic.” Sakusa said dryly, rolling his eyes again.
“You weren’t invited either, Mr Grumpy Pants.” Inunaki points out. “Why aren’t you upset?”
“Because Atsumu will need someone to drive him, and I’ll inevitably get pulled into one of his schemes. Like I always am.”
Hinata thought their friendship was so odd, and he genuinely wondered how it worked at times. But he knew people felt the same way with his friendship with Kageyama.
It just worked, somehow. And he knew that’s how it was for them. Especially since they had known each other for years.
“Wait, why would you drive Atsumu?” Hinata asked him.
“Why wouldn’t I?” Sakusa counters.
Before Hinata can say more, the bill is dropped off and everyone is going their separate ways. Sakusa pays for himself, and slips on his jacket, walking away.
I guess I’ll never understand their friendship, Hinata thinks.
Before he even continue thinking about it, his phone rings, and it’s a call from Kageyama.
He gets so caught up in the argument, he doesn’t see them leave together.
Surprisingly it’s not Hinata, or Bokuto, or anyone on the team who pops the balloon regarding the mystery.
It’s Akaashi Keiji.
One day, Atsumu (well Sakusa, really) is picking up Bokuto from the gym, since he has planned something with him and Akaashi later..
It’s the teams day off, but most of them are there lazily practicing. It was a shock to find both Atsumu and Sakusa leaving early that day.
“Bokuto, let’s go, Akaashi is waiting.” Atsumu called. He walked over to Bokuto, who hasn’t even gotten ready yet.
“Dude! You’re not even ready?”
Atsumu had cleaned up nice, wearing a nice shirt, a pair of black jeans, and some nice boots. He knew this day was important to Akaashi so he wanted to look nice.
Most importantly though, he was finally able to wear his favorite piece of jewelry now that he wasn’t playing. It could finally sit on his finger and not tucked away as a necklace under his shirt.
Inunaki, Tomas, and Hinata looked at Atsumu and Bokuto, confused.
Bokuto’s eyes widened. “I must have lost track of time! But I can shower super fast. Give me like ten minutes!”
Atsumu rolled his eyes. “It’s not me Akaashi will kill if we’re late.”
Bokuto ran to showers, and Atsumu found himself chatting with his teammates about his absence. He made vague references, since he knew Akaashi didn’t want to spread the information around.
About ten minutes later, and Bokuto was still not out, he heard angry stomps up to him.
“If I have to spend one more moment with him, I’m going to scream.” Akaashi said, scowling. “Atsumu, you’re one of my best friends, but you have terrible taste in fiancés.”
“Geez, what did he say to make you so upset?” Atsumu laughed.
“Nothing .” Akaashi said, stressing. “That’s the issue. It was so awkwardly quiet I couldn't stand it anymore.”
“Yeah,” Atsumu said, laughing lightly. “Omi is very socially awkward.”
“Tell me about it.” Akashi muttered. “Now excuse me while I throttle a certain someone for making us late.”
Atsumu laughed as Akaashi went into the locker room to find Bokuto, and turned to his teammates.
They all looked stunned, like they couldn’t believe what they just heard.
“Dude, what?” Tomas asked.
“Did he just say fiancé?” Inunaki asked.
“You two are dating?!” Hinata exclaims, though he seems more happy than confused. “Congrats! Since when?”
“We’re actually engaged.” Atsumu said, thinking back. “We’ve been dating since high school though. My third year.”
“But you two hate each other!” Inuaki said, looking like he was told life altering information. “You don’t get along.”
“We banter a lot, yeah.” Atsumu said, giving him a look. ”But we get along just fine. It’s not real arguing.”
“But you…and he…and I thought…” Tomas trailed off, looking lost. “You don’t even have a ring!”
Atsumu ran his hand through his hair and down his face in exasperation. He knew the moment the light caught on the ring, so he held out his hand to show them.
“I don’t wear it during practice or games. And half the time I forget to put it on, so it mostly lives on a chain I wear.” Atsumu said, rolling his eyes.
He sees Akaashi pulling a mostly dressed Bokuto. and said, “I have to go. See you all for practice tomorrow.”
As Atsumu walked away, he didn’t hear the conversation the rest of them had.
“Who could have guessed that .” Inunaki said.
“Not me.” Tomas said, shaking his head.
“I don’t know,” Hinata said, smiling for his friends. “I think it makes a perfect kind of sense, don’t you think?”
And inexplicably, they had to agree.
Hinata turned to them, eyes glinting mischievously, “Besides, who else could deal with them besides each other?”
