The Guarded Heart

Summary:

Talon of the Coruscant Guard thought keeping watch in a hallway all day would be the worst assignment of the war. When a new representative moves into the office across the hallway, she immediately catches his eye.

And possibly his heart.

Too bad the new girl didn't move to Coruscant for good reasons. Reasons that eventually catch up to her.

Can Talon keep her safe while following his orders like the good soldier he is supposed to be?

Chapter Text

Nevari Morgaux, defender of her village and daughter of the House Morgaux, was not looking forward to staying on Coruscant for who knows how long.  But her Family and local Security had agreed, given that her attacker was still at large, that she could not stay at home on Magi until they at least got a lead on the person.  It didn’t matter how much she argued she could take care of herself, everyone else thought it better.  As her mother bid her farewell, she promised to write often and would keep an eye on home for her.

An uneventful trip from the Outer Rim found her moving in with a distant cousin on the Capital planet.  Justinian was the current Senator of Magi, a clerical error that had gone unnoticed for over a thousand years allowing their planet to maintain Republic representation and a vote in what was happening.  And given that a Galactic civil war had broken out only a few months ago, already named the Clone Wars, there was a lot happening in the Senate.  As he didn’t feel comfortable leaving her at their apartments alone while he was working, mostly because he knew she had a habit of getting involved in neighborhood activities good and bad, he decided to make her a Representative so he could keep an eye on her.

Justinian didn’t really elaborate on why he’d gone through the trouble of making her a Representative, especially since she wasn’t exactly representing the other planet of their system.  She found he wasn’t much of a talker, choosing to use as few words as necessary to get his point across.  But he was well liked among his peers who had helped him obtain a desk for her part of the office, really the reception area just outside his own.  Unfortunately, a previous Senator had managed to jam the door that separated the Senate hallways from the outer offices so it remained opened.  This meant she saw a staggering number of people coming and going as she worked to help her cousin.

One such person to walk past quickly backtracked and stepped right up to her, introducing himself as Kuna, Theelin Representative slash Aide to his Senator.  He was trying to find a different office for the Kern Sector and got lost a few turns ago and was trying to find his way back.  After getting the okay from Justinian, she went with Kuna to try and find his lost offices.  As they walked through the maze of hallways, he told her the ins and outs of what they did and gushed about his other friends from Pantora and Ryloth before insisting she join them for lunch that day.

Every so often they would walk past a man in white and red armor, standing at attention, a blaster rifle next to him.  Nevari eyed each of them curiously, but Kuna walked right by as though they were either statues or not even there.  When she asked him about them, he simply shrugged and said they were Clone Troopers and that there were so many of them he just got desensitized to their presence.  A few floors above where he’d found her, they came across the offices he’d been looking for.  A number of thank yous later, he bid her farewell, reminding her they had a lunch date with his friends and that he’d pick her up just before 2:00 PM.  Pleased to see she hadn’t lost her touch when it came to making friends, Nevari turned to try and find her way back to where Justinian’s offices were.  It wasn’t lost on her that she only noticed the Clone Troopers on the higher levels but was glad to know the Senate had some sort of additional protections.

So began her new life in a new place with a new job.  Hopefully this fresh start would prove to be a pleasant sort of adventure.

She’d been there about half a year when she noticed him.  Just outside, in one of the alcoves, stood a Clone Trooper at attention.  He didn’t move and everyone else walked past him as though he was part of the decorations.  Nevari couldn’t recall if she’d seen him before today or not, she’d gotten familiar with who walked past their offices, and she felt sure she’d never actually seen any Clone Troopers down in the lower level hallways until now since the Magi Senate offices weren’t on one of the prominent levels.  Justinian had mentioned once over lunch during her first month there that the chain of command had decided they were better served in other areas of the Senate.  Senate Guards stood watch over the renowned Systems Senators that were more prone to attacks than they would be, the Coruscant guard supplementing them.  But as the Morgauxs worked very hard to keep a low public profile, they weren’t high on anyone’s list for vendettas or worse.

Today’s to-do list was about getting the numbers to justify or condemn the latest acquisition bill for Justinian to decide how he was going to vote.  It was not an easy task, but she eventually found the money trails that were to do with the bill in question and not red herring accounts.  Gathering up the information neatly, she left the information on his desk for when he returned from his lunch meeting and made her way out to get a quick bite herself, nodding quietly to the Trooper in the Alcove.

When she returned 30 minutes later, her bag of takeout wafting deliciousness up to her, the trooper was nowhere in sight.  This saddened her although she couldn’t place why since she’d come to enjoy moments of solitude.  Enjoying her lunch with just her romance novella to finish, the time passed without much ado.  Getting up to toss her trash away in a hallway bin, the Trooper was there again in his alcove.  She never heard his footsteps and wondered if she was really seeing him or if he was a spirit her mind made up.  Nodding to him again, she turned to catch up on messages and wait for Justinian to return.
