Work Text:
Ohse awoke with a jolt.
She was sprawled on the floor, unfinished drawings and spilt paint surrounding her. She must have fallen asleep in the middle of her work. A shame, since she had been intending to quietly disappear from the house that night. As usual, it didn’t go according to plan.
She looked towards the sound that woke her up, turning to her phone as it had fallen from near her lizard’s terrarium onto the floor. She slowly crawled over to it, not caring about her hands and feet getting poked and prodded by all the stuff on the floor along the way.
She picked up her phone, and the first thing she saw was a notification from Fumiya, sent not even a full minute before.
“Come to my room,” it said.
Along with that, she saw the time. It was 2:30AM.
Ohse tried to blink the sleepiness out of her eyes, making sure she was seeing this right. What was Fumiya doing, asking for the presence of someone like her at such a miserable time of night?
Even so, she stood up and trudged down the hall to Fumiya’s room. She thought about knocking, but she didn’t want to accidentally wake up any of the others. Since Fumiya was presumably expecting her, it was probably okay.
She found Fumiya on her couch. The room was dark, but her phone illuminated her enough to show her sitting up right, a blanket loosely draped over her shoulders. She turned and looked at Ohse expectantly.
She opened an arm out, stretching the blanket out like a wing, ushering for some smaller creature to huddle under it.
Ohse was that smaller creature, but she was in no rush for such protection. She walked over to the couch, sitting next to Fumiya and letting her put the blanket around her too.
Fumiya was silent, just turning her phone over to show Ohse what was on the screen.
It was just a video of a cat playing with a toy.
Ohse watched and silence, glancing at Fumiya somewhere in the middle, waiting for her to do or say something. All Fumiya did was scroll to the next video.
It was a video of a cat eating a treat that came out of a tube, and it was making a “nyem nyem nyem nyem” sound.
Ohse kept on watching and listening to the videos as Fumiya swiped through them. She would keep glancing at the girl next to her, waiting for any reaction more than her silent stare. It wasn’t even a blank expression; there was a glint of interest in those dark purple eyes. Ohse couldn’t say she had never seen that before; Fumiya often showed interest in the oddest things, like talking about death and black holes. Something like this was…different.
“Fumiya-san,” Ohse finally spoke up.
“Mn.” Fumiya didn’t even look at her.
“Did you…need anything from me…?”
“Nah. Just wanted someone to watch these with.”
“…Okay.” Ohse looked at the screen again. “Do you like cats?”
“I guess. There remind me of myself, kind of.”
They watched on in silence for a bit longer. Ohse felt her eyelids grow heavy, her head falling more onto Fumiya’s shoulder. In turn, she felt Fumiya’s head tilt a bit until it was right on top of hers. The weight was comforting, but comfort was never an entirely good feeling. After all, Ohse was certain she didn’t deserve such a feeling…although, it felt different when it was from Fumiya. More acceptable, somehow. After all, no one else in the house understood her the way she did. Maybe that was why…
Suddenly, the room went dark as Fumiya’s phone fell from her hand and onto the floor.
Fumiya’s whole body then timbered down onto Ohse’s lap,
Ohse sat still and stiff, staring down at Fumiya, who was barely visible in this darkness.
“Fumiya-san?” she whispered.
No answer.
Oh no. She was stuck. Or maybe Fumiya was the one who was stuck. Stuck on top of a piece of shit, poor excuse for a human being…
Then, Fumiya shifted a bit. Ohse felt the urge to move back a bit, letting them both adjust their positions a bit. Fumiya lay on top of Ohse, resting her head on her chest, pulling the blanket over both of them. Ohse felt her face grow warmer, just letting this happen. Her heart was racing; she wondered if Fumiya could hear it.
“Ohse,” Fumiya spoke up.
“Y-Yeah?”
“You don’t mind this, do you? Staying with me?”
Ohse hesitated; she didn’t want to say no, but she didn’t feel like she was supposed to say yes. “…Only if you don’t mind that it’s me.”
“I don’t mind. You’re the one I called here.” Fumiya’s head lifted up, her cheek brushing against Ohse’s chin. “I want you to stay.”
Ohse nearly recoiled from the touch, but the proximity made it hard to do so. She instead just let Fumiya push herself up closer, practically cheek to cheek. She brought her hand to her hair; the straight black locks were surprisingly silky against her fingers. Meanwhile her own hair had grown so long and frizzy as of late. It was an eyesore. Disgusting, really. And yet, she felt Fumiya’s fingers thread into it too, raking through tangles.
They both kept moving around a bit, their hands and faces grazing each other over and over. It felt so nice, but it also made Ohse want to squirm away and crawl into a hole to die. She wasn’t built for such nice feelings…But Fumiya’s weight held her down, leaving her trapped in a prison of affection.
And then, without a word, she felt Fumiya’s lips press against her own.
It wasn’t their first kiss; they shared a few when they were in the park together, secluded and hidden from everyone else in the house. Doing it in this room felt different. It was more certain, and it stirred up feelings Ohse had long since buried deep inside, intending to never let them come to light ever again. At least this kiss was in the dark.
As it prolonged, Ohse brought her hand to Fumiya’s cheek. She stroked the skin with her thumb, feeling it get warmer. Fumiya let out a low hum, though it could have easily been mistaken for a purr.
Ohse felt dizzy when Fumiya pulled away, needing a moment to catch her breath. How long had that kiss gone on for? There was no way to tell; every moment spent with Fumiya bled into one another.
The kiss seemed to tucker Fumiya out too, as she rested her head on Ohse’s chest again. She clung to her tightly, but it wasn’t uncomfortable.
“Thanks for watching with me, Ohse,” she whispered. Though she couldn’t see it, Ohse was certain Fumiya was smiling as she said that.
Did she fall asleep then? Ohse couldn’t be sure. The room got so quiet then, it didn’t make a difference either way. She soon sunk back into sleep too.
In her dreams that night, she drifted through darkness with Fumiya by her side, still close and radiating warmth.
And when the darkness brought them to brighter shores, there were cats.
Many, many cats.
