Grief Is A Weird Thing

Summary:

Wade’s most loyal friend crosses the rainbow bridge.

“She was dogpool, a pool! Pools don't just die”

Dead dove, do not eat.

Notes:

Taking a break from my usual fluffy romance. It's the one and seven year anniversary of my two bearded dragons' death and this has been a very cathartic piece to write. Even though they passed 6 years apart they just had to choose within two days of each other.

This piece isn’t for the numbers and the dopamine hit I get when people read my work, it's something I felt necessary to write at this point in my life. I cried a lot writing this, missing my scaly babies a lot right now.

This is very much a dead dove, do not eat, there is pet death.

Work Text:

Hank led Wade and Logan into his office, a small room decorated in bookshelves and certificates. It's never good news if you’re told to sit down.

“Wade I’m so sorry,” Hank began, he was professional almost to a fault in moments like these. Logan took Wade’s hands into his own, he knew what was about to be said but didn’t know how his partner would react. “She passed peacefully, it looks like she suffered a heart attack in her sleep.”

“But…” He gripped Logan’s hand. “She was dogpool, a pool! Pools don’t just die.” his voice raised with every word, tears welling up in his eyes.

“From the DNA test you had us do a couple days ago, it appears she had a slightly different mutation to your own. We believe that whilst she could heal from injuries like yourself, there would be a limit to how much her body could take, and her older age meant it was only a matter of time.” Hank explained, careful with how he chose his words. Logan had told him to prepare for any type of reaction.

“No, no I don’t believe you.” Wade began. “Like yeah she was old for a dog but she was fine until a few days ago, she was only meant to have a cold or something. She was fine.” His voice cracked at the end, just as the tears spilled down his cheeks. He squeezed Logan’s hand and pulled it close to his face. Feeling Logan’s other arm wrap around his shoulders he choked out a sob.

“Another thing we discovered was that she had a limited sense of pain, so it may bring you some sense of comfort that she wasn’t in pain when she passed.” Hank continued, struggling to find the words he knew were necessary to help his friend understand.

Wade let out another sob in response.

Sharing a glance between old friends, no words had to be said between Hank and Logan for the former to take his leave from the room.

“My deepest condolences Wade.” Hank rested his hand on Wade's shoulder for a brief moment before leaving his office.

Once the pair was alone, Wade curled up into Logan's embrace as he felt wave after wave of emotion. Sadness. Longing. Bittersweet memories. He missed his tiny companion. His tears were silent now.

Wade’s tears dried up long enough for Logan to drive the pair home. Hank had made sure that they weren’t disturbed as they left the X mansion.

The lights were off and their apartment was cold. The silence was too loud for Wade.

“Go sit down bub, I’ll make you a hot chocolate, with all the toppings.” Logan put his hand on the small of Wade's back, leading him towards the sofa. Wade only nodded and curled up into the jungle of blankets that covered his half.

Watching his partner out of the corner of his eye, Logan made hot chocolate for the pair, all the toppings as promised. He kept checking where he stood as he moved around the kitchen to make sure he didn’t stand on little feet that wouldn’t potter around anymore.

Wade’s eyes were glassy and unfocused, staring at nothing in particular. Taking the hot chocolate as Logan passed it to him, he whispered a thank you. No one climbed up onto the sofa to beg for the whipped cream on the top of his mug. He turned the TV on for background noise, not standing the silence for even a second longer.

“Why did she leave us Lo?” Wade’s voice was barely audible.

“It was her time bub.” Logan pulled Wade and mount blanket into a cuddle.

“Are you sure she wasn’t in pain?”

“I'm sure, Hank showed me the results and analysis, I trust him.” Logan placed a kiss on Wade’s forehead, who in return snuggled impossibly closer.

“Thank you, for everything, I don’t think I could get through this on my own,” Wade pushed his head into Logan's hand that was stroking his hair. “Please don’t leave me as well.” He said, almost inaudibly.

“I can promise you that I won’t leave you, Hank checked both of our DNA for mutation analysis and as far as he can tell we’re both here for the long haul.”

“God bless the blue and furry.” Wade let out a weak chuckle.

*****

Episode after episode of ‘Friends’ played on the tv. It was the only sound in the small apartment for hours. Eventually Wade fell asleep, silent tears had dried on his face; but for now he looked peaceful. Logan pulled another blanket from the side of the sofa and slowly reclined his side so as not to wake the younger man.

It was only now that Logan let himself feel the loss of Mary Puppins, they had grown close over the past few years since they both came to live with Wade. She was there through the ups and downs he and Wade experienced of living together, through apartment changes, through their eventual relationship. She was a constant in their lives, yet now she was gone.

He had experienced loss before, a man of his age and ‘job’ was destined to have the people around him die. He lost everyone in his previous universe. Wade took him in when he had no one and nothing.

Logan, more than anyone, knew that loss never got any easier the more you experience it. Every time he felt death, the feeling never dulled, an ever sharp knife through his heart. He grew used to the feeling and knew the pain his partner felt; and also knew that he couldn’t take that feeling away. He could comfort Wade as much as humanly possible but it wouldn’t take away the hurt.

Tears fell down Logan’s face this time. Tomorrow they would go back to the X mansion and meet with Charles to discuss burying Mary Puppins at the mansion. He wanted Wade to have a proper place to go and mourn, somewhere he could always visit. Placing a last kiss on Wade's forehead, Logan too fell asleep.
