Fries’s Struggle

Summary:

* This one-shot/drabble is part of two Goiken High Appreciation one-shots, appreciating the background characters in my other fic, Goiken High (a high school au). Can be read as a stand-alone.

Fries has a horrible day dealing with customers in his dumb part-time job at the YoyBurgers fast-food chain. Luckily, he has someone to talk to, even if she is a little weird.

Work Text:

Fries just has one bit of advice for anyone looking for a job in this ever-worsening economy: whatever you do, don’t get a job in customer service. It’s horrible. Or at least, that’s his experience. Maybe you’re just incredibly patient. Hell knows Fries isn’t.

His routine every Friday is to go to school, come out somehow more tired than he had been last Friday, go to his stupid part-time job at YoyBurgers, suppress the urge to quit working there, then come home and sleep. It definitely gets tiring after the first week, though it’s more like it gets boring after the first minute. The money is probably the only thing keeping Fries working at YoyBurgers, and also the fact that he’s really not qualified to work anywhere else. Struggles of a fourteen-year-old teenage boy, too young and too old for a whole lot of things, he supposed.

It’s not supposed to be surprising when he gets a whole bunch of angry consumers at his counter screaming how “the pickle on my burger is hanging twelve centimeters off of the patty,” and “the mustard isn’t spread evenly on the bottom of the bun.” (well, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but the complaints are somewhat like that— Fries never really listened anyway.) But, it’s weird, because today the restaurant is overly busy; meaning more annoyed customers and an even more annoyed Fries.

So it’s really not his fault when he takes his lunch break for the second time of the day.

Eh. Too late for going back, he’s already walking towards the door. Nickel can cover for him, he works here too. Fries’ll chalk it up to his manager mishearing him when he said “bathroom break” and not “lunch break.” Fries steps outside, enjoying the fresh air and the lack of that lingering grease smell; sunlight, how he’s missed sunlight… wait, hold up, who’s that near the garbage cans?

Walking over to the little alleyway where the dumpster and garbage cans are located, he could make out a girl wearing all red (even her hair was red, funny coincidence) standing amongst the trash. Coming closer, he could see it as a girl he recognized— Evil Leafy!

Evil Leafy was Leafy’s cousin, though no one really knew why she was called the evil version of Leafy. Fries suspected it wasn’t actually her real name, since Leafy’s costume last Halloween was named Evil Leafy; so why’d she name her costume after her cousin? Either Leafy was really weird, or Evil Leafy only gave her real name to her family. He only knew that she existed because he had run into her walking to Gelatin’s house one day, and she had a striking resemblance to her cousin, Leafy. Since then, they’ve been fast friends. Best friends, one could even say.

“Hey, Evil Leafy, whatcha’ doing here?”

“...” Silence. It’s fine, he’d make her talk one of these days.

“So funny to run into you, again. Have you seen any of my calls? I’ve been texting you, like everyday.”

“...” If you looked at her, it’d look like her scowl deepened, but obviously her face didn’t move at all.

“You have? Yeah, duh, why would I even ask that… What’s up, E.L.?”

“...”

“Yeah, same, my day’s been going pretty bad. Sucks to suck, I guess.”

“...”

“Nice chat, Evil Leafy. As much as I’d like to stay, I gotta get going to make sure my pay doesn’t get reduced. You should stop by again one of these days.”

“...”

“Yup, sad to see you go too. See you!”

“...”

That was nice, talking to his best friend. It livened up his day, though, seeing Evil Leafy. Fries walked back to the restaurant, still fairly tired and annoyed but slightly better. She’d say something back next time, for sure! Just playing the waiting game now, and Fries would make sure this time to be patient.
