Chapter 1: The Beginning

Chapter Text

I don’t know why I am in the forest. I don’t know how I got here. However, I don’t think it matters when I am about to die. Whatever is chasing me reminds me of a troll. However, I am unsure if I have ever had a good look at it. Though I am sure it is something that science will have a field day with. Then again, I thought giants were myths. I could be in a Government Facility. Though, they could’ve found me by now. They always have some sort of security.
There was a loud thud behind me. Too loud. It felt like an earthquake and out of the corner of my eye, I saw the hand of the being that chased me. It looked human—too human—and it was smoking. This has to be a government facility.
“Are you okay?” someone called from up and behind me.
“Huh?” I said in confusion, not seeing anyone.
“I said, are you okay?” a guy, maybe in his thirties, landed in front of me. The clothes he was wearing seemed familiar.
“As fine as I can be,” I responded while looking at my clothes. I don’t know why, but I felt like I was missing something. ‘Where are my shoes.’ I whispered, looking back up.
“Why are you here in the first place?” he started interrogating me. I mean fair enough, I was found in the woods, alone being chased by some creature.
“Don’t remember,” I said. I don’t remember why. I just remember waking up here and there was the creature nearby. Saw me, looked hungry and started running. Don’t know how I outran it. Must’ve been the adrenaline. I don’t think I could do that again.
“Hey, look at me,” he said snapping his fingers to get my attention. There were other people here now. Horses too. And they were all staring. Some seemed concerned. “What’s your name?”
“Diana,” I said, concerned because people were staring at me at the difference in the clothing. It was something I just noticed. The style is completely different. I don’t know why.
“The name’s Miche,” He said before walking away, towards someone. Their leader, maybe? They talk while the rest of them resume taking guard and talking to each other. One though, went right up to the creature with a notebook in their hand. They seemed all over the place.
“You there!” They called out, rushing towards me. Their eyes seemed wild. “Hey!”
“Yes?” I muttered as they stopped suddenly in front of me.
“How did you manage to outrun the titan?” they asked hurriedly.
“The what?” I said confused.
“The titan. How did you outrun the titan?” they asked again.
“I don’t know. Fear maybe. I don’t think I can do that again,” I answered their question. They seemed to listen gleefully.
“Fascinating!” They said as they went back to write notes on what I now know as a titan. Miche had started walking back towards me with who I can presume to be the leader. The both of them are still talking while they look at their fellow soldier taking notes.
“I see you meet Hange,” the older man said.
“I did,” I said, almost whispering. “Who are you?”
“Keith Sadies,” he said holding out his hand. I shook it. I don’t know what else to do. “Listen. Here’s what we’re going to do.
We’re going to finish our expedition we going to take you back to the walls. You understand?”
“I do,” I answered quickly. He nodded and turned to face the group. I tuned out before I heard anything he said, but shortly after Miche came to talk to me again.
“When we get back, we’ll have to get you some new clothes. Those rags don’t seem to do you any good,” he said. Now that he mentioned it, I haven’t bothered to look at the state of my clothes. Looking at them, I can’t wear them again. But I can wear them for a little longer before throwing them out. Thank goodness for that.
“Alright, let's head out!” Keith yelled at the group, and they all responded. They were quick to get ready to leave. “We’ve been out here long enough and we can’t bring attention to ourselves anymore.”
And with that, we were on our way back to the place they called home. And yet I think I remember this place. I've seen it somewhere before. Miche had to take me with him. I feel bad about it but he was the only one willing to do it.
This is a strange place.
