The kiss was wonderful. The kiss was breathtaking. The kiss was exhilarating. The kiss was...
...Way too short.
It ended before Sonic could even process it, and Shadow was dashing off to a separate room. He exclaimed a rather embarrassing "woah" and then just... stood there. For a moment.
Sure, he liked doing things fast, but c'mon. This was different.
It's not like he wasn't grateful, it's not like he didn't like it - no, he felt as though he'd been blessed by every diety and god from every possible religion. It was just short.
Then again, maybe he was selfish for wanting it to be longer. To be fair, that was his first kiss. For all he knew, it was Shadow's, too.
And yet all that was left behind was the slick feeling of chapstick on his lips.
He forced himself to walk again. He laid down face-first onto the nearest carpet. He processed. He stood again. He processed. He stared at the wall. He processed.
...He hesitantly licked his lips.
...Oh. So that was real. That did just happen. Unless my lips are just really sticky for some other reason.
He walked back into the main room after a few more seconds. He greeted everyone with a smile - it was a party, after all! - and stared a little too long at Shadow when he went back to converse with Tails.
...He found himself licking his lips again. Rubbing them together.
Man. It's been months since I've even seen a chapstick tube. Now he's putting it on my lips like he's my personal applicator...
Sonic realized he was very down bad for this stupid hedgehog, and he couldn't keep a goofy grin off of his face. He could feel his muzzle shrouded in warmth the entire night.
...It only got worse by the time he and Shadow crossed paths again.
He never found himself to be bold - especially not when it came to romance. The two had only been dating for a few weeks, after all. And so, that begs the question: what the hell gave him the courage to do this?
"Hey," Sonic started when Shadow stood in front of him once more. The two were in the exact same spots. In the exact same room. It felt like a weird sort of deja vu. One that he wanted to repeat until either time ended or god died.
"Hey, uh. So," he awkwardly started. He tried his very best to be confident with it. It... didn't work very well. But brownie points for trying, he supposed. "I didn't really get to process that. Can we try it again?"
Oooohhhh good Gaia he probably sounded like the world's biggest idiot.
And yet... Shadow looked on at him with the most beautiful neutral expression he'd ever seen. "Sure."
Sonic could feel his ears perk up. Before he knew it, he was grabbing Shadow by the cheeks and pulling him into a gentle kiss.
(The way Shadow looked, with closed eyes and a flush on his face, would be forever ingrained in Sonic's memory.)
It only lasted a few seconds. Sonic couldn't help but wish it was more.
Once again, they split ways, both running off in opposite directions in an embarrassed flurry of emotions.
Sonic bit his lip with a grin, only to realize, to his own delight, more chapstick had rubbed off on him. He almost didn't want to drink or eat anything just to keep the feeling of the gloss on his lips.
Days later, he couldn't help but think that maybe next time, he'd wear some lip gloss to reciprocate.
